AT40 - This Week In 1971 (1 Viewer)

10. "Chick-A-Boom" - Daddy Whoever

More trash...... Jesus, I knew this was bad when I was a kid. How the hell did this get to #10?

Just passed a dead skunk in the middle of the road.  Will die if that's coming up soon.

9. "I Am I Said" - Neil Diamond

I am not on a good run here. I love Neil, but do not like this one.

I hope #8 through #1 don't let me down

13. "It Don't Come Easy" - Ringo

I LOVE this record
There’s a great early episode of The Simpsons using this song.  Can’t recall all the details, but Marge is revisiting her talent for painting portraits that she abandoned when she had the kids.  An old portrait she painted of Ringo Starr resurfaces (she sent one to Ringo in the late 1960s, and we see Ringo finally getting to it in his fan mail stack he’s promised to reply to).  Cue montage of Marge working the canvas to “It Don’t Come Easy”.

8. "Stay Awhile" - Bells

This is one weird record. It's got stalker written all over it, but she wants him to STAY.

7. "Bridge Over Troubled Water" - Aretha Franklin

Welp, I guess this is where some of us may separate. Art Garfunkle sings the hell out of this on the S7G version, but he ain't Aretha. She blasts this past anything humans are supposed to do. You aren't supposed to be able to do the things Aretha does here.

I didn't know Aretha recorded this song.
Wow.

2. "Never Can Say Goodbye" - J5

Michael sings the hell out of this. It later became an early disco hit for Gloria Gaynor

Go listen to it. It's incredible
odd sidebar..i was at kenny g's house for 3 days straight doing his record release parties sometime in the 90's, and on the last night, michael bolton sang this song around 1am in kenny's acoustically perfect studio with some master pianist and it was one the most amazing things i've heard in person.  think what you may of monsieur bolton, but he ####### crushed this song, that night.  just amazing.

Not a great countdown.

I think Marvin Gaye should have commanded all 40 spots.
When I saw the year, I thought it would be better than it turned out. I was expecting more southern soul and some decent hard rock. Instead, we got - to me, the nadir - Diana Ross Diana Ross-ing one of the great rock records of all time. I'm all for reinterpretations of great works of art, but her cover of "Reach Out" is so airheaded and dumb it defies belief. I blame Berry Gordy more than her.

whoa, not a fan of kenny g or bolton, but that whole scenario is unbelievably cool.

a story for life.

I believe you. Bolton had a formidable voice and, in the setting you were in, I can imagine he sounded great. I can not, however, forgive him for the commercial hatchet jobs he did on Otis Redding and Percy Sledge. I know he sold a billion copies of each. God bless him. But those covers were just awful.

Sure you're not talking about the Grass Roots? I don't think Bratton was ever in Three Dog Night
I was trying to be funny.  I feel like I was on a bit of a roll with a high percentage of my posts getting at least 1 like, but I guess this was a swing and a miss.  Big fan of both bands, got into them in early '82 thanks to finding my older sister's stack of 45's.

FWIW, looking at this list, it's no wonder bubble gum pop would soon start being a thing, though TBH, I love me some Evolution Revolution.

:bag:

Both were great bands who got no respect from the hip rock critics who decided such things back in the day. Paul Revere & The Raiders were another.
they kicked ### on "Where The Action Is" a tv show EVERY DAY (weekday) afternoon in the mid-60s.  If I were a girl I would have had sex with Mark Lindsay as a 3rd grader.

It had more than it's fair share of clunkers, but it made up for it with some great classics.  Not a bad countdown.
