Atlanta Braves are smokin' hot (1 Viewer)

Stinky pitching = a lot of runs.  They'll come back to earth tonight as they face Chris Carpenter.
Jake Peavy and Chris Young down?
:goodposting: Jafo, you're not being fair - they faced the meat of the San Diego rotation (Park, Young, Peavy) and lit them up. Those three pitchers had ERAs of 4.29, 4.46, and 3.12 respectively going into that series and the Braves got them for 19 ER in 14.1 IP aggregate, an 11.93 ERA. Likewise, Marquis and Weaver came into their games with a combined ERA of 5.82 and gave up 18 ER in 9 innings, so Atlanta's basically been scoring 3 times as many runs as the pitchers they're facing typically give up during this stretch. If that continues tonight, they'll get 8-9 even with Carpenter on the mound.
I'll give them credit against San Diego, (although Peavy has been sub-par this year, I love his 4-9 record) but when I typed my post I was referring to the current series against St. Louis where they've scored 29 runs in the last 2 games.

I don't care if they score the 10+ runs tonight... I just hope for the W and the sweep...

:goodposting: 4 of the teams in front of the Braves are playing each other (LA/AZ, Brew/Colorado i think) and the Reds are playing the Mets. The Braves win and its likely they gain another game on 3 teams

Pedro

Glavine

Trachsel - has been very decent

Pelfrey

Backed by the best ERA for a bullpen in the league.

Just wait until Cliff Floyd starts hitting.
Pedro - no question a fine starter.Glavine - he's ok this year. Not great, but ok.

Trachsel - poor numbers - 46 walks to 47 strikeouts? Yuk! WHIP of 1.53? Yuk! Teams batting .279 off of him? Yuk!

Pelfrey - has two starts and his numbers are worse than Trachsel's.

It seems they always have a good second half, coming on strong at/after the break.  Just how much ground do you think they can make up?  Any chance at the wildcard?

Honestly, some pretty week teams between them and the top -- they could potentially do it.  I think it is imperative, though, that they make a trade to get some relief pitching.  Absolutely, positively, must do this.  Problem is -- so many teams are in the race...I don't know who'll be the seller.  Even if there is a seller, Yankees will probably outbid.

They've scored at least 10 runs in 4 consecutive games.  Chipper is hot.  McCann is hot.  Andrew Jones is hot.  Offense isn't the problem.

Best thing that happened to them was Reitsma getting hurt and going on the DL for the remainder of the year.  Come to think of it, since then they've been on this run.

IF Cox were to pull this off -- by some miracle -- just go ahead and induct him into the Hall of Fame.

Thoughts?
I wouldn't be at all surprised to see Wickman wind up in Atlanta.
Good call. Just acquired Wickman for Class A catcher Max Ramirez.

At least they didn't give up anything. That said, I'm not particularly looking forward to watching him load the bases in the 9th every night.

Who does it push out of the bullpen? Yates was the last one in, but he's been solid.

Maybe Jorge Sosa, hard as that would have been to believe last season. that guy has just flat sucked this year.I looked at Wickman's game log and it's not all that bad. He got knocked around for 5 ER in .2 IP a few weeks ago and that's pushed his ERA up by a full run. His WHIP of 1.43 is not great for a closer by any stretch but it seems like he's boom or bust. He's had 4 crummy outings so far this year out of about 25-30 total, so for the most part, he's been OK. Gotta be better than Reitsma.

Braves are DEAD

They won't make the postseason this year.
OFFICIALLY ELIMINATED FROM NL EAST TITLE :banned:
:hifive:
Hope the 16 years it took waiting to post that were worth it.
Hope you enjoyed the two World Series appearances in that 14 year span. Nice success rate.
I think they might have been IN 4 or 5 WS....but pretty sure they only won once in that span.

Yeah, it was 5. Can't imagine why I couldn't remember the 4 times they finished second.Shouldn't you be on vacation on someone else's dime right about now?

How was this a debate? You came in here acting like a dooshbag and I responded in kind.

Congratulations for an historic run. Had to end sometime and this is the year.

Bobby Cox is the best manager in history.

Heard an interesting theory yesterday. It came about as a discussion about whether a pitcher should win the AL/NL MVP. This person was saying no, for the fact that they can only have an influence on the team every 5 games.

Then made a reference to the Braves and the fact that their leadership, senior leadership was always the pitchers. And...even thought they were freakishly good -- World Series teams must have leadership from somewhere other than the pitchers. (Yes, Chipper, Andrew -- I know. But they were always 2nd fiddle to the pitching crew.)

Interesting theory, I thought.

It was a good run. The Braves are an extremely well run organization. The Mets finally seem to have figured out how things need to be in order to sustain a winning ballclub. Hopefully, it carries over from year to year.
