Atlanta defensive backfield (1 Viewer)

Dead sexy
Both the corner and safety positions are a little unsettled.

Safeties - Coleman, Decoud, Moore and Giordano;

Based on his numbers, Coleman looks entrenched. Decoud put up very meh numbers. They invested a 2nd round pick in Moore, who was maybe the other safety in last year's draft behind Delmas. giordano is an offseason signing but is seen as mainly depth.

Cornerbacks - Dunta, Grimes, Owens, Chevis.

they traded the underachieving houston in the offseason. they signed Dunta and he appears to have a stranglehold on one of the starting positions. that leaves Grimes, Owens, and Chevis fighting for the other starting spot.

how good is moore? can he leapfrog ahead of coleman? who earns the other corner job opposite dunta?

I believe DeCoud was co-MVP of the defense along with Lofton. Even though he plays the less-desirable FS position, I think he's your best best.

I like Owens the best of the lot at CB2.

One thing to consider is that Grimes played the LCB spot last season while Owens was manning the RCB spot at the end of the season.

They may leave Owens at his spot and let Grimes back up Dunta and play the nickel.

All that said, it's enough of a mess that i am going to stay away from it.

I expect Robinson and Williams to be the corners with Grimes in the nickel. Coleman will start. I was not impressed with Decoud last year. It will be interesting to see what Moore brings to training camp this year.

I do too(Owens). I'll leave him on my DTS for now.

From Draft Guys last year.

why this? dunta, sure, but why williams? and why grimes in the nickel?

CB -Dunta Robinson is the Falcons #1 corner w/ Owens and Grimes battling for the #2 spot. Long term, I see Owens winning out due to his size and Grimes manning the nickle slot position. Grimes is very tenacious and would be a great player but he is just too small to line up w/ the taller recievers that he would be expected to cover on the outside. Chevis Jackson will hardly see the field and there is a chance that he will be cut before the season starts. Brian Williams is old and may play one more year w/ the Falcons at the most.Safety - Not sure about Fantasy stats, but Decoud is by far our best safety right now. William Moore was injured all last season and much of his senior year so it is still debatable if he is even going to be a factor in the NFL. Moore hasn't even been able to get many reps in w/ the team since he was drafted last yr. As far as Coleman goes, I personally would not consider rostering him on my fantasy team.

nfl.com lists owens as 5'9, grimes is listed as 5'10.

Brian Williams was brought in last year because of his play in Jacksonville for coach Smith. He was by far our best corner until his injury. IF healthy he would start. I am not sure how he is recovering though. Grimes was inconsistent but did a decent job. Owens looked lost at times when he got on the field at the end of the season but he may develop. Jackson did not get much playing time at all so it doesn't look promising for him. If Williams is not healthy it will be another tough year for our defense.

And Coleman was our most dependable safety last year period. DeCoud, while had some good play was very inconsistent as well. He did not look like a sure thing to me. That is why I look forward to see what Moore brings this off season. We have not seen anything yet to know if he can or can not be the safety the Falcons brass thought he was when they drafted him last year. If healthy this could be a very interesting battle in training camp. If he is not healthy itwould be another blow to an already shaky secondary.

regarding grimes vs owens, it's interesting that you say these things. i liked what i saw out of owens more. i found this assessment of the falcons db's elsewhere...
Brian Williams – Some people think we lost our best Cornerback when he got hurt against the Bears. I disagree. He simply was not good last year. Just go back and watch the highlights from Week 2 (CAR) or Week 3 (NE). Yes, opposing QB’s Yards per Attempt skyrocketed from 6.94 YPA all the way to 8.13 YPA after he went on IR. But the team faced a much tougher slate of Passing Offenses after that point – five Top 12 teams in Passing DVOA, counting the Saints twice (all losses). Once the schedule eased up (NYJ, BUF, TB), the Pass Defense suddenly looked good again. The injury to Brian Williams was not the reason the Defense fell apart. Grade: D+

Brent Grimes – Really, I have no idea how to grade Grimes. He ended up with 6 INT’s, plenty of highlights, and the best charting numbers of any Cornerback on the team. He also looked thoroughly confused on his assignments plenty of times, had the most Missed Tackles of the team’s D-backs (10), was picked on by opposing QB’s (highest Target Percentage of team’s CB’s) and was yanked in and out of the line-up by the coaches. But his fairly good overall charting numbers, combined with low expectations and league minimum salary ($385,000) make me want to bump this a bit higher than I originally intended. He certainly provided plenty of bang for the buck. Grade: A-

Christopher Owens – He’s a big bundle of potential and promise. He only got significant snaps starting in Week 12, but generally handled himself well when he finally got his chance. He had a very good Completion Percentage allowed (56.0%), but his Yards per Completion allowed was higher than you’d want (even if you exclude the 65 yard TD against the Jets). A pretty good showing from a 3rd Round Rookie, if you ask me. Grade: B

Chevis Jackson – He had a specific role, and he did it well. His numbers from PFF don’t look like anything special (72.7% Completion Percentage Allowed; 9.0 Yards per Completion – shorter because he was always in the slot), but consider that he was tied (with Nnamdi Asomugha) for the best Stop Rate on completed passes. Basically, the polar opposite of Houston – he was making his tackles just short of the sticks on third and long. Grade: B+

from PFW...

The Falcons will have at least four players competing for the starting job at right cornerback in training camp, and this is a legitimate battle. Ninth-year veteran Brian Williams(notes) is considered the front-runner to win the job by some observers, assuming his knee doesn't give him any problems. He was a starter in 2009 before tearing his ACL in Week Six. Brent Grimes(notes), who made 14 starts for Atlanta over the past two seasons, and Chris Owens, who started six games as a rookie in '09, cannot be counted out, however. Grimes led the Falcons with six interceptions last season and the coaching staff has been enamored with his athleticism. Owens probably fits best as a nickel back, but he hasn't hit his full potential yet and is capable of putting up a fight. The other contender, Chevis Jackson(notes), began last season behind Williams, Grimes and Owens on the depth chart and he's a long shot to start.
