Deeper IDP rosters have players we need for this season, but are not part of our long term plans. I have had some success in stashing player right before the fantasy playoffs that haven't done anything in the curent season, but have a path to relevance the next year.
I was originally thinking for likely current free agents, but I think we need to cast a wider net, maybe guys that are owned, but we can find a path to greater relevance, trade targets for the offseason, etc. That way it's helpful for keeper leagues, as well as dynasty leagues.
Helpful links:
http://overthecap.com/ ---IDP owners need to know this site, really good for spotting players that might be cap victims, and then looking for thei replacements. Mess around with the free agency tabs, you'll get the hang of it. Best site, along with spotrac for predicting the future.
http://www.ourlads.com/nfldepthcharts/ --Best depth charts site, IMO. One thing: They are updated, so IR players are not included in the depth charts. So bear that in mind.
I encourage people to research on their own, especially in the division of teams you follow. You have seen your teams, and their opponents, more than the rest of us, so use that info to confirm or question the names we have here.
ARI--Cards have 37 mill in cap space next year, and check these UFA: Calais Campbell, Chandler Jones, Kevin Minter, DJ Swearinger, Tony Jefferson. 37 mill isn't a lot, is it possible they let Calais walk? Maybe, he's not a kid. Frostee Rocker on the other side is old as well. Minter is a FA, but I am darned if I can find a replacement on this roster, I can see a one year prove it deal extension and a rookie here next year. Those safeties are also really worth looking at. Jefferson didn't get a sniff in FA, and came back for a one year deal, he's gonna want a longer deal from someone. Swearinger could be back, or they could both be gone. The names that jump to me on this roster are Robert Nkemdiche and Tyvon Branch. Nkemdiche is a full time starter at DE next year perhaps, oozes potential, and there's always outside chance he gets a DT designation. 3-4 DEs aren't exciting, but not the wasteland they used to be. The Cards have 1.5 mill in guarantees for Tyvon next year, and are not going to pay Swearinger, Jefferson, Branch and Mathieu. Jefferson and Swearinger could see their value plummet next year, and Branch is a fine pickup if you are looking to trade in a 2016 fill-in like Whitner or Blanton.
ATL-This is slim pickings. The future of the team in the back 7, Jones, Neal, Campbell are all rostered, right? I'm looking to acquire Campbell and Neal anywhere I can. Get Neal before he knocks himself out of the league. Concussion concerns with him, IMO, if he keeps up that style. Guy is a kamikaze. If Beasley gets classified as a DE, he is a target, and at DT, Grady Jarrett potentially. The one guy, and this is a reach, is Derric Shelby. Was getting a lot of PT beore he was injured, and Brooks Reed, Tyson Jackson, and Clayborn are just guys. If ATL's defense continues to improve, you might get some value there. ATL has some players on this team, some depth, and useful role players. They are on the right track. Anyway....
BAL- There's some action here, but we may be a year early. Suggs, Dumervill, and Weddle are all old, but I could see them all being back next year, they have cap space tied up in all three. So guys like Matt Judon and Kamalei Correa might be lesser parts of a rotation next year still. Judon is a LB, but he's 275, and could be reclassifed. He is the one to watch, but it might be 2018. Kendrick Lewis potentially as a S, but there are better options, IMO. I like Timmy Jernigan, would love him more as a DT. Brandon Williams is a UFA, he'll be a priority re-sign, but if he gets to a 4 man line somewhere, his value could jump. Good, good player.
BUF-Have some players getting a LOT of PT that are all UFA: Gilmore, Zach Brown, Lorenzo Alexander, Blanton. The young guys waiting in the wings here are Shaq Lawson and Reggie Ragland. Aaron Williams returning from IR is definitely worth a stash. If Brown or Alexander aren't re-signed, Ragland and Lawson have clear paths to full time duty. Alexander is really interesting, he was a JAG special teams demon, who BLEW UP this year. The Bills have money and draft currency tied up in Hughes and Lawson, could they let him go? I can see it. Brown has been a IDP stud this year, but is he good enough to hold off Ragland? Also possible, they re-sign him, and Preston Brown loses his job. Interesting possibilty regarding Alexander, Lawson, and Hughes: If Rex Ryan goes, and a 4-3 guy comes in, all could be reclassified as DEs. That would make them a LOT more appealing.
CAR- This got a lot more interesting for bad reasons. What if Keuchley is done, via concussions? AJ Klein or David Mayo? Personally, I'm all set with either one. Even if one is the MLB next year, I believe they will be 2 down bangers at best, and Thomas Davis and Shaq Thompson are your 3 down LBs. Shaq is a buy, between Davis being 33, and Luke's concussions, he might get a TON of snaps next year. I am a Thomas Davis guy, and he has 4 mill in dead cap next year, so I think Davis will be a 3 down guy for another year. He is a guy I will trade a mid round rookie pick for this spring. One more year of Thomas Davis is worth that, I'll buy him off a rebuilding team. Mario Addison and Charles Johnson are both UFA, leaving Kony Ealy and little else. If Addison to be re-signed, he might be a worth a look.
CHI-Eh, maybe Jonathan Bullard? The two ILB spots are set, they have Jones-Quartey at SS, but can cut him with no penalty. There will be secondary value here, but who will be starting? If Bullard is reclassified as a DT, I love him, same with Floyd at DE. It would take a coaching change, which seems possible, but unlikely. Willie Young and his backup, Acho, are both FA after this year.
CIN- One thing we know about the Bengals, they are cheap. So a pending FA like Dansby might not be back. Vincent Rey can be cut with no penalty, clearing 3 mill in cap room. Cutting Maualuga would save 4 mill. Hello, Nick Vigil! 3rd round pick, ran a 4.7, could he be a 3 down guy next year? And we know Burfict is creaky. Vigil needs to be rostered before end of season, poster boy for what we talking about. Shawn Williams is locked in at SS, the DEs are set, nothing else here, I don't think.
CLE-Kirksey under contract next year, Collins will be franchised, no LB to chase. Ogbah, reclassified as a DE is possible, but it sure seems like a risk for a roster spot. Look out now, but Ibraheim Campbell has establsihed himself, and is playing more. Can do worse for an end of bench S. Carl Nassib for a deep cut at DE.
DAL-Jaylon Smith, right? I would love it, but man, I am not optimisitc. If you have not seen his highlights, go do it right now, it's IDP porn. Such a stud in college. Church and Wilcox are both FA, and Dallas has cap trouble. Wilcox migh be a cheaper option for them, and DAL SS has put up numbers. Mailek Collins at DT, Jack Crawford and Terrell McClain are both FA.
DEN- DeMarcus Ware is a UFA, Shane Ray might be on your wire, and could be a nice big play IDP OLB on the end of your bench. Todd Davis is cheap next year, he might keep his job. Darian Stewart is a UFA, Justin Simmons could take his job, but the S that isn't TJ Ward isn't going to be a consistent performer.
DET- Have a lot of D-linemen UFA: Devin Taylor, Tyrunn Walker, Armonty Bryant. Kerry Hyder might be a buy, but word is out on him. A'Shawn Robinson at DT, perhaps. Rafael Bush is a FA, Miles Killebrew is worth a look. If you can pick him up in the offseason, that's a guy I would look for. If they let Bush walk, and don't grab a S in FA or the draft. Also, if they don't add a LB, he is moneybacker size. Lottery ticket.
GB- Only guy I like as a but is Blake Martinez. Both safety spots are set, and the Pack won't be signing any expensive FA linebackers, so Martinez seems very safe for most LB snaps next year. Probably a good buy, even if you don't love the player. Perry and Peppers are both FA, but I don't see another edge guy here.
HOU-Wilfork and John Simon are the only FA of note, so it seems like the studs in the front 7 remain the same: Watt, McKinney, Clowney. Their S spots have been IDP wastelands, let's go fishing elsewhere.
IND-D'Qwell is 33 years old, and there are gonna be tackles next year. So who? Well, they tried David irving, Sio Moore, Antonio Morrison, Josh McNary, and Edwin Jackson. The answer? Clayton Geathers at S. Check the snap counts, the Colts aren't trusting any of thes LBs with snaps. We might see two new LBs next year, but probably one next to D'Qwell. Any LB this team drafts needs to be closely looked at. I liked Morrison coming out of college, but I ain't rostering him.
JAX-The 2017 potential here is all young and high profile: Fowler, Telvin, Jack, Cyprien, and Ramsey. The ONE guy I like: Yannick Ngakoue, and that's a reach, he has designated pass rusher written all over him. I might like Fowler as a buy low, and if you own Myles Jack, you should worry. He can't get on the field??
KC-The pass rushers are set, the S are set, Chris Jones is interesting at DE, and the ILB spot right now next to DJ is Ramik Wilson, check his availability. Sorenson can be cut.
LA- The only gold here might be at S, TJ McDonald is a FA, as is Trumaine Johnson. I've no idea who the backup for McDonald is. Barron, Ogletree, Hayes, Quinn all under contract.
MIA-FIns took no one of interest on defense the last two drafts, aside from Tony Lippett at CB, who might be a player. Reshad Jones returns next year, taking all the S value, but the names to track here might be Zach Vigil, Neville Hewitt, and Andre Branch. Branch is a UFa, but might come back, and take a job if Wake and/or Mario Williams go bye bye. I always liked him. Vigil or Hewitt could take Jelani Jenkins' job, or Alonso could get hurt again. Hewitt has gotten snaps this year, Vigil has not.
MIN-I see nothing here. All good players under contract, maybe a Kentrell Borothers can get some snaps, maybe Jayron Kearse can take Sendejo's job. I got nothing.
NE- Elandon Roberts is a buy, and I bet he is a 3 down LB more than Hightower is, assuming he doesn't suck. Even if he has quiet games this year, I will look to buy. Sheard is a FA, and Flowers has taken his job. Is he rostered? Go get him. Hightower is a FA, but I bet dollars to dougnuts he re-signs.
NO-So the Saints have a bad cap situation, as usual. They can finally get out rom under Jairus Byrd's deal, and clear 3 mill or so, and I bet they do. Question is, does that hurt Vonn Bell's value, forcing him to play deep? It might. Robertson seems relatviely safe next year, but the guys to stash might be Stephone Anthony and Kikaha at DE.
NYG-Could be something here, but it's a leap of faith. JPP and Keenan Robinson are both UFA. If Owa Odighizuwa is ready, he might be the DE to take over for JPP, but he hasn't been good enough to spellJPP or Vernon this year. All the Giant LBs are average, and Keenan led them in tackles, so BJ Goodson is intersting, only because he hasn't shown he is JAG, unlike all the rest of them. JT Thomas, Casillas, and even Kennard ar potential cap casualties. I think he's an offseason, or summer waiver pick up, rather than a stash. He hasn't sniffed the field.
NYJ-Jets have cap issues, but can easily clear space by cutting Revis, David Harris, and trading Sheldon Richardson. They love Harris, does he stay another year? If not, take a peek at Julian Stanford and Taiwan Jones (not the Raider RB).
OAK-Raiders have a LB core in flux. Perry Riley, who has been solid, but not a tackle monster, and Malcolm Smith, who has been a solid IDP option, are both FA. A bargain exension for Riley is possible, as is Smith, but I could see the Raiders moving on from Smith if Heeney or Cory James develop. James is the better athlete, Heeney's best role might be a 2 down SLB type. If forced to choose, I would go James. It's a risk though. Along the D-line, Mario Edwards is a guy I want. Base DE, slides inside on passing downs, and in a position to get sacks pushed to him from Irvin and Mack. The issue in the back 7 is talent, the Raiders have DBs that are active, and the D is improving, there might not much value at the LB spots.
PHI-If Mychal Kendricks is cut, and lands on his feet somewhere, maybe he regains his value. McLeod, Hicks, Graham and Bradham seem like the IDP to won next year, same as this year. Nolan Caroll is a FA.
PIT- I liked Bud Dupree, and Harrison is old, and Jarvis Jones sucks. Big play OLB stash for sure. If Timmons walks, Vince Williams is a starter, and Shazier likes to get hurt. Potential LB2 next year. Get him. The safeties are both replaceable, I want neither one, maybe Sean Davis takes a job, he's worth a watch list.
SD-Te'o is a FA, as is Jahleel Addae. Perryman is worth a stash, maybe he can bounce back. If Addae leaves, Stucky and Lowery are interesting, but the S spot has been a jumble. McCoil, Adrian Phillips, who knows?
SF-Team is mess for the forseeable future, there's value to be had. Antoine Bethea is a FA, if he leaves, amybe Jaquiski Tartt can step in. Has moneybacker size. The only stash LB here is Shayne Skov, but that's a longshot, he was a UDFA who has seen no snaps. If they draft a MLB high, I'm gonna take a hard look. Rashard Robinson is a look in CB leagues.
SEA-All the studs back next year, their most expensive FA is the dang kicker. No gold in these here hills.
TB-Noah Spence at DE, both safeties are UFA, is Ryan Smith playing S? More likely they bring McDougand back, or find a vet, or draft pick or two.
TEN-Rashad Johnson and Daimion Stafford are UFA, Kevin Byard is a stash at S. Sean Spence is a FA, can Woodyard hang onto a 3 down job? I doubt it. Derrick Morgan and Orakpo nearing the end, Kevin Dodd, and even David Bass, if he re-signs, are ptential big play OLB types.
WSH-There's a S spot here, but all 2016 S are UFA, and none are worth of a stash. Su'a Cravens is the back 7 guy to grab, and I think Preston Smith is a buy low. Breeland at CB for sure, across from Josh Norman.
I was originally thinking for likely current free agents, but I think we need to cast a wider net, maybe guys that are owned, but we can find a path to greater relevance, trade targets for the offseason, etc. That way it's helpful for keeper leagues, as well as dynasty leagues.
