Atlanta voluntary mini-camp notes (1 Viewer)

Culled from multiple articles from the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

***As expected, it's Boley SLB/Brooking MLB/Nicholas WLB.

***Von Hutchins is starting opposite Chris Houston at corner.

***Jimmy Williams did not show up.

***Erik Coleman is the starting FS (with Milloy at SS).

Nothing exciting, but it's always worth confirming the offseason speculation with hard mini-camp data.

I'm excited to see what Nicholas can do at the weakside spot. I got him in the 6th round of my rookie draft last year, held on to him through all the cuts and free agency period for my fantasy team, hoping that he would become a starter this year and performs well.

JB, Rotoworld seems to think Von Hutchins is a band-aid at CB. Do you feel the same?? Barring a blue-chip rookie, who do you see bumping Hutchins from his starting gig??Rotoworld - Hutchins:

Hutchins was an interesting swing player in Houston. I agree that he's nothing special, but I doubt Irons is pushing him out of a job. And Williams seems to be MIA and uninterested. The Falcons aren't taking a corner with the third overall pick, and there may not be a talent available that can force what would be a very inexperienced CB pairing.Hutchins may be a band-aid, but he may be hard to rip off before the 2009 season.

In a perfect world, Hutchins is your DB 5 or 6 as he is pretty good on special teams and at least is not an embarrassment at any DB position. Everything I understand is that the Texans wanted him back, but for DB #6 or so money and opportunity.

I thought I read that Williams showed up, but left pretty soon after for "personal reasons" or something like that. A coach quote made it sound like it wasn't a big deal that he had to leave.ETA: Here's where I read it:

Williams was at the team's first workout Monday and met with Smith later that day. Williams, who was moved from cornerback to free safety last season, spent the first day of minicamp as the No. 3 free safety behind free-agent signee Erik Coleman and Antoine Harris, who saw significant action last season, mainly in nickel packages.
Coach's quote:
"It's not a negative [him not being there]," Smith said. "These are voluntary workouts. We're glad we got the participation we received. The next time we get together will be a mandatory workout."

^Don't expect Jimmy Williams to start ahead of Coleman.

Will Boley put up anywhere near the #'s he did last year?
He's been getting better every year as his opportunities have increased. Better DTs in front of him and further improvements (particularly in strength, he came into the league as a hybrid LB/S) should mean his numbers get even better. Chances are a rookie could be lining up next to him at MLB, if that's the case, expect Brooking and Nicholas to fight for the WLB spot in camp.

I think there's a decent chance Irons beats him out, while a second round draft pick could have his spot by the end of the year.
