I want to start off by saying no matter the way you have your re-draft setup that is your leagues choice and more than likely there is a reason behind it. That being said, are you getting the most out of your ability to put together a Fantasy Football squad to march out each Sunday to do battle?

While both variations have been around for about as long as I can remember playing fantasy football the Snake draft has always been king. It is the primary way people think about player rankings, its the way ESPN/CBS/Fox normally breakdown rankings, and its also going to be the primary free league setup that is offered.

What is the reason to make a transition to Auction based drafting?

[*]Complete Flexibility of how to fill out roster

[*]You no longer need to "reach" for players

[*]Players are not untouchable (if you have the 1.5 pick your almost certain not to get Foster)

[*]Rewards owners with a view and plan of possible buy low players (IE - Cobb/RG3/Morris)

[*]Not stuck to tradtional 1st round, 2nd round, 3rd round mentality

With so much talk from people on this board about "luck" and "randomness" why would you want the most important part of the year, the draft, to be riddled with random picking orders or the luck of being able to snag RG3 1 pick before another owner who passed on reaching a round before for him.

Snake drafts are still fun and enjoyable because your able to steal players from the owner picking behind you and the different strategy involved but personally in re-draft leagues I am exclusivly Auction based.

Also as a note in the dynasty league that I had started I had a 5 player auction draft PRIOR to the snake draft to fill out the remainder of the roster to allow for all teams getting equal shots at all the top players.

So thats my take :banned:

There's no reason not to go auction these days.

It used to be that the only online way to do auctions was through fantasyauctioneer, but now all the major sites have setups for it.

Also, my auction league takes it one step further. We have to stay within the salary cap the entire season. So free agent acquisitions must be bid on during the year with available cap funds. Makes it pretty interesting.

I may consider auction next year for a different league. But right now in my main league we'll be sticking with snake. I feel like for auction to work you have to have all 12 players be relatively serious fantasy football players. My league is about half and half. Snake makes it easier for the other guys to compete. We used FAAB for this first time this year and the less serious players had a hard enough time with that.

Actually thats an excellent point, while I support an auction based draft while its a little backwards I like going straight waivers worst to first. I feel this keeps the leauge closer compacted together. Now if it was a ultra competitive league for $1k+ I might feel different but in our friendly yet competitive re-draft leagues I like having the teams down on their luck getting better.FYI, I have won my main league 2 out of 3 years and back in the championship this year so its not because I need it but its to keep the 2 or 3 guys out of the 12 that seem to draft via auction just bad each year in the heat of things until at least about the end of the season.

Okay, maybe you guys can help overcome some objections. We draft in person and the concern is that it will take all day to accomplish what we can in a couple of hours, tops. As everyone gets older, it's harder to get the whole league together on the same day at the same time (we like the in-person aspect of friends getting together). With an all-day commitment it seems impossible to accomplish that.

Is there a way to conduct an auction in roughly the same amount of time it takes to do a snake draft?

Most likely it will take a little bit longer, probably 4-6 hours depending on how many breaks you take and what not. The difference is that you never have someone sitting around thinking about who they want to take. They simply call out a name to put up to auction and the bidding kicks off. Someone like AP can take longer as people think if they want to put up 60 instead of 59 but for the most part things move along. The most important rule is dont go 1..2..3..4..5..6.. instead on players like Brees/Foster/Rice jump up to the level he will most likely go for anyways. Start out at 35-40 for Foster. Also you don't need a timed Auction you can simply have it counted off by the league commish, sold in 5.....4......3.....2.....1..... Sold and players like Kickers and Defenses its a simple ask do I hear 2 points? SOLD!In the end it might be a little longer of time together but you can still complete it in an evening or long afternoon.

Agreed. Worst to first waivers do wonders for keeping causal leagues competitive. FAAB is fine, but it requires more work, and in my leagues we've found that it results in the less knowledgeable/interested players being less active.

Have everyone bring a laptop and do it online or with some sort of software that keeps things moving quickly? Otherwise, no, it'll take longer.

You're doing it wrong if you want to rush the draft. Having it take longer is a good thing. Order some extra pizzas, grab some beer and make a day out of it. Draft day is the most important day of the year and the most fun day of this hobby. I dont understand why people want to rush it.

That is another plus to auctions that you are always active on any player. On the flip side if your at the turn you pick 1.12/2.01 and then your off for the next 10-15 mins just sitting there and cant get into the action bidding up a player or trying to get a great deal on your back RB while others don't even have 1 RB yet.

I love auctions. I auctioneer for high-stakes auctions. It is a blast for anyone who hasn't tried it yet.

With that said, there are ways to set up a fair snake draft. I encourage everyone to look at myffpc or even the FBGs players championship format. It gives you 2 flex positions and 1.5ppr for TEs. This gives you the ability to build your teams many ways.

Either way, draft day for me is Christmas and usually lasts 12 hours in Vegas!
