I had occasion to print out an auction results for an "Expert League" for this year and to examine it.
Format was SportsGrumblings based, competitions for Industry types, an excellent barometer for where the surprises and bargains came from in '07.
Keep in mind that all this is based on a 16 team keeper league, 32 man roster with 14-15 starters (2 ea. DB's/DL's and 3 ea. LB's), one franchised player and two RFA's on each side of the ball each year, and a RFA auction for the remaining keepers. As such, the player pool is selectively reduced as drafted rookies have a contract committment for up to four years.
Auction results point out just how this season has unravelled (literally) for each of the positions players. Guys that went at high auction prices were outperformed by lesser lights.
The auction prices are irrelevant unless you know the entire format but there are indicators of the surprise threshold.....guys that just weren't in the information curve in the Spring. The minimum nominating price for a UFA was $300K, a first round #1.01 draft pick is $2M contract that is UFA exempt for four years.....$2M is a threshold that top RFA's exceed by a factor of 4X; top UFA's have a price that is typically 2X to 3X.
Hence, $300K is bargin city and $6-7-8M is top drawer.
Here's some names with April/May prices (UFA unless noted):
I. High Priced Spreads:
Boldin, Anquan (UFA) $10.25M
Fletcher-Baker, London (RFA) $7.8M
Branch, Dieon $7.05M (UFA; Note that league has no PN/KR premium).
Houshmandezeh, T.J. (RFA) $6.3M
Greenway, Chad (UFA) $6.3M
Hasselbeck, Matt $5.0M
Grossman, Rex $4.55M
Porter, Jerry $4.05M
Bulger, Marc $3.025M
Pennington, Chad $2.875M
Rhodes, Dominic $2.235M
Furrey, Mike $2.225M
June, Cato (2XRFA) $2.0M
Kennison, Eddie $1.8M
Simms, Chris $1.05M
Now, for the bargains and the high priced guys that earned their keep:
Welker, Wes $300K
Garrard, David $300K
Crayton, Patrick $300K
Lenon, Paris $350K
Dayne, Ron $350K
Garcia, Jeff $625K
Romo, Tony (RFA, Min. $1.0M) $1.025M
Brady, Tom (RFA) $1.750M
Palmer, Carson (2X RFA) $2.0M
Farve, Brett $5.675M (RFA)
These guys only count for the auction part. The waiver wire guys come later and are passed to the weaker teams like crumbs from the table.
That's a sample of the guys that surprised, the guys that were over priced and the guys that held their own in '07.
