Barry Bonds (1 Viewer)

cobalt_27,

What do you think of Favre? We got into this a bit on MNF.

1) He was addicted to painkillers

2) He took them in an illegal manner (Whether he had his doctor supply him an exorbitant amount or he had friends get them for him, I'm not sure. But however he did it, it was illegal.)

3) He was able to withstand the pain of an NFL season year after year.

Now he's going to be the all time passing TD leader. Thoughts on that record breaking accomplishment?

Painkillers can be just as much of a performance enhancer as steroids, and maybe even moreso. If Joe Regular had done what either Bonds or Favre did, he'd be in jail. So outside of the obvious (Favre is white, everyone loves Favre, and middle and upper class citizens have less disdain for white collar criminals), why (and do you think it's fair that) has Favre's record breaking chase been silent on these issues?

:goodposting:i'm not saying cobalt is a hypocrite, but the vast majority of bonds' detractors are.

Clemens might have been on the juice too... Uh oh, we better start erasing all those records as well.
It makes no sense to consider Bonds in a vaccum from all other players - he may have had the advantage of PEDs, but so did many pitchers (Gagne, anyone?). IMO the way to look at Barry is to acknowledge that in an era of rampant PED use, he was the best hitter around. You can "like" hitters who came before better, you can argue that Aaron or Mays was a better baseball player than Barry, there are discussions you can have, but the fact remains that Barry did things no other player did, with or without the benefits of juice.
