Bears Training Camp Day 4 (1 Viewer)

HUGE crowds at camp on a work day. I was a bit taken aback. They showed their amateur fan status by waiting for autographs prior to practice, and getting stuck watching practice from the end zones. I watched from the 40 yard line and enjoyed it immensely. Training Camp to me is the road back to normalcy.

Devin Hester had velcro for hands. The guy is catching EVERYTHING thrown near him and he appears to be extemely focused.

Rex has been locking into his receivers (still). Griese and Orton didn't look much better.

Mark Bradley and Rashied Davis didn't look particularly strong today. Davis had problems getting off the line, and both had a case of the drops.

Moose made a spectacular catch on some extremely tight coverage from Nutty Tillman on a 35-40 yard pass over the middle. Tillman made it impossible to catch, an outstretched Moose tipped it, and then caught the airborne ball off the tip.

Also looking good in the passing drills, Uncle Ben aka David Ball looked good. Not explosive, not quick in his cuts, but he caught everything thrown in his direction.

Greg Olsen is TALL. Good Lord he's a big kid. He looked a bit stiff today - I don't know whether he's sore from the past few days, but he looked a bit mechanical and stiff when he was walking between drills. He looked pretty solid in some blocking drills next to John Tait, and he looked pretty smooth running routes - not stiff whatsoever - and he showed some good hands.

Garrett Wolfe and Mike Brown sat out today. Wolfe was seen kneeling on the sidelines during stretching drills rubbing his right hammy up high under his glutes. Adrian Peterson also got knicked up on a running drill. Neither was seen punching or striking Cedric Benson today.

Most of the defensive drills were on the far side of the field, so not much to report on that - other than the fact Lance Briggs was practicing with the first string players.

...and my youngest son got Urlacher's and Mike Brown's autographs on his signature football. Along with training camp kicker Nick Novak and scrub RB Josh Allen.

who was covering Hester? Benson look any better catching the ball? What about Dvoracek and is Darwin Walker in camp yet?

Like I said, the defense did their drills on the opposite side of the field, so no Dusty updates, and Darwin Walker WAS suited up.

Ball looked GOOD.

I didn't catch who was covering Hester, but three guys ran into each other in pursuit of him - all second teamers.

Danieal Manning had an INT from the safety position in 7 on 7 drills.

Cedric Benson looked GOOD catching the ball.

Pretty sure I read somewhere that Hester burned Tillman on a play ...

BTW, apparently the pick for Walker is a conditional pick and could be a fourth.

The Bears could lose a fourth-round draft pick in the deal depending on Walker's playing time, but it will be well worth the investment if Walker fills their immediate needs.

and they have San Diego's third rounder thanks to a trade down with the Thomas Jones pick - so the draft day damage is minimzed.

Hey Grid, Does Benson look ready to handle the load this year? I will try to get to camp at least one day this week or next and report on it as well.
He looks quicker than last year - and I'm sure he's happy Thomas Jones isn't there to smack some sense into his head.Time will tell if Benson can handle the load - as there really isn't any hitting going on. I'm more worried about the two tackles staying healthy, as the kid from Boston College or Terrence Metcalf could step in if either guard gets hurt.

nice. really looking forward to more of these reports. What about Rex? How are his mechanics looking? Any of the second string backers standing out?

Thanks for the news on David Ball. I haven't seen his name mentioned on any of the Training Camp reports I have been reading, so this makes me happy! :bag:

Not at camp, but from what I'm reading and hearing, Rex seems to have turned over a new leaf, especially in terms of pocket presence and confidence. The biggest tidbit I've heard is how well he is stepping UP in the pocket to deliver upfield, rather than drifting back to escape pressure, and making off balance throws. He had so many problems with this last year where he would not step up in the pocket, then as he felt pressure, his mechanics would break down and he'd throw off his back foot, often resulting in an interception.Obviously the true test will be full game speed in the regular season, but it seems like this was a major point of emphasis for Rex and the staff to address this off-season, for obvious reasons.EDIT to add: Reports are that Griese has looked abysmal so far, and that Orton may very will win the backup job.

Same here, thanks for the update on Ball! I picked him up as a flier in all my leagues. Let's see if he can stick. Could he be a shorter Ed McCaffrey?

If you consider the fact that Grossman is only playing on offense, he's really only playing in less than half the games he's in. Hence- he's still basically a rookie. Cut him some slack.

Heard John Clayton on Mike and Mike today gushing about how good Hester looks at wr. Said he could be the next Steve Smith. Im very excited about seeing this guy lined up in game situations.

Clayton is WAY out over his skis on that prediction.

I took a picture of Darwin Walker smiling and talking on his cell phone IMMEDIATELY after this mornings joke of a practice (no pads). He must have just agreed in principle on his five year contract that was announced later in the day.

Jerry Angelo is quietly doing an awesome job this 'offseason'.

I wonder if the signing of Walker is a little insurance in case Tommie Harris's agent Drew Rosenhaus wants to play games next year going into Tommie's final year of his contract. I say yes.

Grid,

As always your updates are much appreciated. One question for you... is there anyway in he11 that Hester could wind up as the #3 WR behind Muhammad & Berrian?

I don't think so. Even though he's the rage at camp, the Bears are pretty consistent in 'spoon feeding' him - He's not the brightest bulb in the drawer. I'm sure they'll teach him a half dozen plays and that will be what they want him to master. They don't want his skills to diminish as a return man either, as was the case with Dante Hall when he started playing more on offense.

As a longtime Bears fan I know this is a possibility, but Harris is not the type of talent that can be replaced. I sincerely hope they pay this kid what he deserves, which IMO is the biggest contract for a DT in the league. Harris is really irreplaceable and an incomparable talent.

I think Orton looked pretty good his rookie year, but then again I'm used to guys like Shane Matthews, Kordell Stewart, etc

could we keep this thread just camp updates rather than trolling and toll-baiting? This is a useful thread. Let's keep it that way.

So homers saying everybody looks like a superstar is useful? News to me.
Contrary to what you might think, the training camp threads can be very useful to those of us who play in competitive leagues. If you're already 100% confident in your projections and rankings and don't need to check on whether or not certain players are progressing in camp or vice versa, then that's fine, but most posters on the training camp threads are providing good info that may impact the outlook for certain players and teams, IMO. Some posts may be slightly embellished, but it can be helpful nonetheless.

and needlessly trashing a team and adding nothing to the conversation isn't. Now can we drop it and wait for Grid to post?

:hot: I think the camp threads are great, you just have to read between the fluff. The info is another tool in the belt.

:( I can tell you that I picked up Kerry Rhodes in the summer of 2005 because of "Rovers" Jets training camp reports, long before people were plucking him off of waivers mid season. I was able to get him for nothing in every IDP league I was in.

Last year, I read about the camp performance of Marques Colston here (can't remember if it was the Saints training camp thread specifically or not), but it led to me take a flyer on him in the 15th round last year. I know not every training camp thread and discussion will yield those kinds of results, but that's just one example of the type of info that you might be able to find.

I agree with sholditch here -- whatever the Bears do with the DT next to Harris, the key for the next decade is a healthy and happy Tommie Harris. He's a special talent, and a perfect fit for Lovie Smith's defense. The Bears will be fair, which means a large dumptruck full of money, and the only way Harris goes elsewhere is if he's concerned *only* with getting the largest dumptruck of money he possibly can.
Here's a news flash.

Kyle "Neck Beard" Orton will displace Brian Griese as the Number Two QB by the end of camp:

http://www.chicagobears.com/news/NewsStory.asp?story_id=3649

I don't look for the Bears to cut Griese - as Grossman isn't under contract beyond this season, and also because Chris Leak is leaking down his pantsleg and has looked God awful in camp.
Is Greise looking that bad or is Orton looking decent?
Everything I'm reading (which comes mostly from the Chicago Tribune on-line or chicagobears.com) is that Orton has worked really hard this off-season, and has looked good in camp. At the same time, Griese has not looked that good at all, from the same reports.
