Beason: Strongside LB (1 Viewer)

How will the move impact Beason's value?

Beason, who has moved to strongside linebacker with Dan Connor taking over the middle (he would have preferred to stay inside, but understands he needed to move because Connor's a better option in the middle than Carolina had outside) will need to be more of a sideline-to-sideline playmaker this year, to help make up for so many missing pieces.

This is a typographical error. The flow of the point King is trying to make in that passage suggests a typo and we've seen multiple reports from those closer to the situation noting that Beason will be replacing Davis at WLB with James Anderson playing SLB. I don't think this is new information that we've missed over the past month and that Beason's new position is actually SLB.

His value is pretty much status quo. I think there's an argument that he's no longer the slam dunk LB2 overall, but he's still a legitimate LB1.

Methinks this was a typo? Everything I have read this offseason had Beason running at the Weak-side LB in Davis' spot, with Connor in the middle.

I think I will cry if my top-5 LB is on the strong-side...

As to his prospects at WLB, just remember that Thomas Davis was actually outscoring Beason last season until his injury, from that same WLB spot. So I actually think that his value will remain the same as it was before, if not increase. Remember, until Davis was gone for the season, Beason was only the #10 LB in scoring. He really lit it up after his main competition for tackles was out. Possible repeat scenario this season as well?

2009 Weeks 1-9 PPG LB stats:

# Ovr Player Pts Avg 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9

3. 25. Davis, Thomas CAR LB 135.0 19.29 30.0 22.0 14.0 B 19.0 22.0 17.0 11.0

How about a value for conner? Is he going to be playing in the nickel?

Put a note in the camp blog summarizing Darin Gantt's position that Connor in the middle may not be set in stone since he's not very quick in coverage. Would suggest that he'll have a hard time holding up every down. James Anderson isn't a slam dunk either, so it's possible Jamar Williams could join Beason in the nickel. We'll have it noted somewhere on the Forum after the first preseason game.

I'm having trouble figuring this out from news reports - is Jamar Williams going to be the starter or not? I know he just got healthy enough to play in the last preseason game last week, and reports about him seem positive, but nothing says anything here outright. Any ideas?

Last I heard, Beason is at WLB, Conner at MLB and James Anderson at SLB, with Beason and Anderson in the nickel. I'm not 100% sure this is a final decision.

Agreed.Darin Gantt suggested as camp began that Connor wasn't a lock at MLB due to his questionable range in coverage, but Jamar Williams missed a lot of practice with injury early in camp. I've seen nothing recently to suggest Williams will push Connor aside.

My impression was that Williams was competing more with Anderson than with Connor. Am I wrong in that?

I think the Panthers like Anderson at SLB. It's doubtful that Williams could hold up at the point of attack as well, even in the Tampa-2 setting. It may never have been explicitly stated by the coaches, but I think the plan was to move Beason back inside if Connor slipped and insert Williams at WLB. Most observers have noted that Anderson is playing well and his presence in the nickel is also probably a good sign that he's locked in at SLB now.

In preseason... Strongside. #52.

He almost always flips to the TE side in the standard 4-3 formation (against a standard 1TE set).

Anderson (#50) is left on the open (weak) side, and gets the occasional blitz responsibilities. Both stay in for the nickel.

But you can watch Beason continue to make the presnap adjustments and calls from his spot, not Connor.
I disagree here. With Ron Meeks as DC, there's certain to be some of these confusing sets in the playbook, but the first five defensive snaps without a balanced, two TE, two WR, single back set against Tennessee last week are below. Beason is marked with a yellow dot.Play 1 -- Link

Beason aligned away from the TE.

Play 2 -- Link

TE and two WR aligned to the offensive right, with TE in motion to left presnap. Prior to motion, Beason aligned away from the TE.

Bah, I guess I can only upload a handful of images to ImageShack without a subscription.

Play 3 (linked below)

Fuzzy, but TE aligned left then in motion to right. Prior to motion, Beason aligned away from TE.

Play 4 (linked below)

TE aligned to left to 2WR side, then in motion to right. Beason aligned away from TE prior to motion, Anderson in coverage over slot WR.

Play 5 (linked below)

TE and FB aligned to right. Beason aligned away.
