Ben Watson-Likely OUT this weekend (1 Viewer)

"Shalise Manza Young, of The Boston Globe, reports New England Patriots TE Benjamin Watson (knee) did not practice Wednesday, Sept. 3, and likely will not play Sunday, Sept. 7."

Let's just say I wouldn't want to hitch my wagon to Watson. I'm not hearing anything good.
Do you mean for this week or this season? What's wrong with him exactly?Should he be cut for Dave Thomas?
He had offseason ankle surgery and now has a knee injury that (of course) no one is talking about. I was told to offically be worried about his condition and his availability. I will try to see what that translates to and if I can pry away some more info.I'm not sure of the official rules, but there was talk of putting him on the regular season PUP list (miss the first 6 weeks), but since he was cleared to practice he may not have been eliglble to go on it (meaning the options at that point were keep him active or put him on IR).It doesn't sound like he's close to practicing either (but that's a guess). The Pats signed a TE cut by the Jets, so I am suspicious that Watson is not healthy. I think they also added a TE to the practice squad, so that could be another sign that they are trying to get some bodies if needed. As for Dave Thomas, I can't tell if he's a better option for you or not, as there may be better choices than Thomas in your league to replace Watson. Thomas probably would be a decent guy to stash on ytour roster should Watson be out awhile, as he may turn out to be the TE equivalent of Wes Welker. By that I mean a bunch of very short passes for a few yards with some broken tackles for a few extra yards (so a min-Welker in terms of production).

I thought the te they signed off the jets was the one they put on the practice squad -- or am I mixing these guys up?

I'll go look.

they also just CUT spach, not that he's another watson, but while we're counting te's....

On the active roster: Benjamin Watson, David Thomas, Jason Pociask (cut by the Jets)I believe Tyson DeVree was added to the practice squad.

Like QB TE is an area where the Pats should have acquired more depth (an aging Marcus Pollard was not the answer). Both Watson and Thomas have yet to show they can stay healthy for a prolonged period of time. With Watson already dinged up they are a Thomas injury away from this position turning into a negative.

I'll agree w/you, but generally speaking, if the top 2 te's on any given team are out w/injury they'll have problems at the position.

if they can get a #3 guy who can just block I'd think they'd handle the problem better than most teams who count on a te for offensive production.

edit: and while watson definitely seems 'injury prone', has thomas really had all that many injuries?

granted, it's hard to injure yourself in the trainer's room.

Thanks David, and sorry I went a little ACF there. It's just hard to believe the Pats won't have a worthwhile fantasy TE, this year. If Watson is MIA, Thomas has to get a huge bump, like from afterthought to potential sleeper. Or will they be using Vrabel at the goalline even more? Any other LBs they might use at TE? Hey, I play IDP, too. :D

So the Pats have only 3 relevant WRs, no TEs, a QB with a broken foot, and 5 RBs. Why do I get this feeling Belichick is gonna throw everyone for a loop and run the wishbone this year?

Ben Watson dynasty owner. I paged Ben Utecht and he picked up the white courtesy phone. If Utecht is available in your league, I'd suggest you do the same.

My two cents.

If only Klecko were still around....I liked Thomas alot in the playoffs 2 years ago

Kyle Brady or Johny Mitchell avaliable?

I double checked and Watson was not eligible for the PUP list.

Kyle Brady is available, but he and the Pats did not have a very good relationship so I doubt he's an option.

Eric Johnson and ex-Pat Jermaine Wiggins are still available though.

Justin Peele looked good in the preseason and different times last year...maybe he's an option too.

DAVID, DO YOU HAVE ANY IDEA OF WHAT TYPE OF A N INJURY AND TIMEFEAME WE ARE LOOKING AT?

Thanks

All I know is that Watson had ankle surgery in the off season and was brought along slowly in camp. He started against the Eagles in the 3rd preseason game but I do not believe he has played since. He is out with a knee injury now.He is listed on the offical injury report as "did not participate in practice" and I would guess he will be listed as out or doubtful tomorrow. That's all I've got other than it sounds like he would have been a candidate for the PUP list if htey could have put him on it.That's all I got . . .

I am really warming to Dave Thomas this year

- He's got the skills to be a viable 3rd or 4th cog in this passing attack (see 2006 week 16)

- Mike Reiss, who told us last June that Welker might lead the Pats in receptions, told this summer that Thomas was the guy to watch for fantasy this year, if he could stay healthy

- Ben Watson can't stay healthy, and he has unreliable hands

- Thomas was VY's security blanket in Texas Nat'l Championship season of 2005 - the kind of target a QB grows to trust.

He's my #15 TE this week, but it wouldn't surprise me if he puts up top 10 numbers against KC. It's all about staying healthy now, not talent or opportunity.

I love Thomas and think he is worth keeping an eye on. He's not the physical specimen Waston is, but he has great hands and runs great routes, which is a lot more important in NE (ask Chad Jackson ...). Without Watson, I could see him developing into the Pats version of Dallas Clark.FWIW, Spach's name is back on a locker in Gillette, which could signal more bad news for Watson ...

Any insider updates? 100% chance he isn%t playing this week? Is this just a one week thing or could this linger?
He%s not listed as out, so I guess he could still play (but it%s very unlikely). He hasn%t practiced at all this week, and anyone short of Brady wouldn%t play without practicing.Yes, this could linger, Expect him to be listed as doubtful and/or questionable for a few weeks.Expect him to be declared ineligble on Sunday before game time.

Agreed. If you have Watson as your only TE, I'd grab Dave Thomas before this week's game so you don't have to make a claim in case -- ahem, sorry, I mean when :headbang: -- he does well.
