Ben Watson (1 Viewer)

Have Watson in a dynasty league and the offers are pouring in. In the preseason, he's looking like the main target in the Pats passing game. I have heard multiple comparisons to Antonio Gates.

Now I think Watson has a lot of value. No doubt about it. But is he overvalued? A lot of folks are putting Watson into their top 5 TEs, some with a ceiling to be TE1 or TE2. Can Watson reach that high or is he more likely to be a good but not great starter?

Its obviously not a good time to trade for Watson as the Watson owner is going to want a king's ransom. But if you are a Watson owner, is it time to unload him while his price is at it's peak or can be fulfill his potential this year?

This can go in either direction. It still pains me that I traded Gates a little too early, but I've made other deals that have worked well, selling at a player's peak.

I guess trade him if you have Gates, but hold if you don't.

Not sure anyone in my league reads this board. Drafted Gates in 3rd and then followed up with Watson in the 10th round of a 14 team league. Actually the pick was more to keep him from other owners, even if they did not know it at the time. But now with Watson on board, Gates makes excellent trade bait.

he hasn't done anything yet. While I'm optimistic, i'm also a realist. There's only 3-5 top notch TE's each year that really seperate from the pack. Odds are against him. If he excels, then its gravy.

The OTHER good strategy in a TE mandatory league is wait until 8 are gone and then take one - if you take the 9th TE off the board, you are guaranteed one of those guys I listed above in the second paragraph
I don't understand this advice at all. The difference between TE#9 and TE#16 was only 20 points last year; if you're going to wait until 8 TEs are off the board, you might as well wait another 5 or 6 rounds and pick up someone from the bottom of the barrel.

Or someone like Kellen Winslow. I think he has at least as good a shot as some of those second-tier guys to join the upper ranks.

I just traded Watson for Wali Lundy ( I have davis and Morency). Getting a starting RB for a TE that isnt named Gates is unreal in my opinion.

I also have Heath Miller. I picked up Watson as a back up. His value has gone through the roof. No way he can live up to the expectations though in my opinion.

I cant decide who is more over rated, Wali Lundy or Ben Watson???

The same way they'll give you a gifts by taking Brady with their 1st pick, they'll take them away by starting a bizarre run on backup TEs when they would all be better served drafting elsewhere.
 Last week I'm drafting in a normally stable league when suddenly backup QBs start flying off the board. I was at the 10th (of 12) pick and when it came back around to me, five teams had 2 QBs. I had to take my first during that turn or I'd have Volek as my starter. BTW, Palmer was taken in the 1st by a normally very competitive owner, so I thought it was going to be a great draft. But, all the other unexpected moves had me filling in some gaps prematurely because I was afraid of what they'd all do next.I don't know what happened, it was like a Bizarro Draft. Drafting with people that really know FF is a little more predictable.

OK. I guess I was wrong about Watson being overhyped. I got him at 14.4 in a 10 team redraft, TE mandatory tonight. Only a couple of guppies...or that's what I thought anyway. He's actually my backup to Gates. I'm very happy getting Gates, but boy is this the year to wait on a TE. Troupe, Winslow and LJ Smith all went in the last 2 rounds.

Especially in a 10-teamer. All of the other teams could have their starter and maybe even 2 or 3 backups and you still have a player who will keep you close to roughly half of the other teams in TE scoring.

I agree completely. Unless you believe that someone like Watson or LJ are going to have drastically increased #s then there is no need to take the 9th TE off the board.

Yikes! Maybe I have the rose-colored classes on but to me: Watson's value >>>>>> Lundy. (In leagues that require a TE)I mentioned that I'd have many inquiries for Watson in my dynasty leagues. Trying to work out what fair trade value might be and I equated Watson's value with Javon Walker.

Where is Ben Watson going in drafts? David Dodds keeps suggesting that he is a great value pick this year. Maybe he was, but in 3 leagues that I drafted in he was value only once.

ADP of 110 and rank of 97

16 team league 6th round 5th pick (85th overall). This was an IDP league and the TE's went so quick that I couldn't bring myself to draft one early. I ended up with Wiggins at 16-2 (242nd)

14 team league 8th round 8th pick (106th) this was my pick so he might have dropped further if I didn't pick

him but this league is guppy like.

12 team league 5th round 9th pick (57th) league of sharks ahead of Gonzalez, Crumpler, witten, etc. I stayed away and was able to get Cooley at 10-10 (118th)

Where is he going in shark leagues? What is the highest you have seen him drafted?

There are several responses to this in this thread.

Ok.. here is another scenario..

Where is Watson going in NON-TE required leagues? With all the comparisons to gates, who the last several years has produced roughtly equal to the #6-12 WR range, I would think Watson would be off the boards fairly early as a WR as well.

he didnt get drafted in my 12 team non te required league...i picked him up this past week though..

my wr include:

s smith

s moss

d bennett

br edwards

m booker

b watson

have to play 3
