Benson changes mind serving sentence now not BYE wk (1 Viewer)

Cedric Benson surrendered himself to the Travis County Jail late Tuesday evening and began serving his sentence. Benson scrapped the idea of doing his time during the bye week. The key here is that with credit for good behavior, he's only expected to serve seven days out of his 20-day sentence. That means he'll be released by the morning of Sept. 6, giving him enough time to prepare for the Sept. 11 opener at Cleveland. Of course, we're still expecting to hear from commissioner Roger Goodell on a possible suspension. Owners shouldn't count on Benson for Week 1 just yet.

Cincinnati Bengals running back Cedric Benson(notes) had originally agreed to serve his jail sentence in the middle of October, coinciding with the Bengals bye week. Someone thought of a new plan, though, and Benson is in jail right now. He was booked in last night.

So, if we go by the timeline established previously, which has Benson leaving jail after seven days of a 20 day sentence, that makes Benson a free man once again on the night of Tuesday, September 6th, five days before the Bengals open the season against the Browns on Sunday.

This assumes good behavior on Benson's part, of course, which I guess we shouldn't take for granted. I'm not saying he's a bad guy, but saying that he's allowed himself to get in some bad situations would not be inaccurate.

And this is jail. This is not a stable, predictable atmosphere. There's no telling what a man will have to do if Nasty Nate decides he wants his fruit cocktail and the Squirrel Master isn't around.

The Bengals play the Colts in their final preseason game tomorrow night, but head coach Marvin Lewis had already said that Benson wouldn't play in that game. Cedric's a veteran, too, it's not like this is a young guy trying to learn the offense, in need of all the reps he can get. If he can stay low in prison, and get out in seven days, from a football standpoint, he should be fine.

If you are playing against Bneson week 1, it might be a good idea to call one of the inmates where he is penned up and ask them to pick a fight with Benson. He'll fall for it. Then pick up Scott and start him.

According to Geoff Hobson of bengals.com, the NFL has suspended right guard Bobbie Williams four games for violating the league's policy banning the use of performance-enhancing substances.

Entering his age-35 season, Williams hasn't missed a start since 2006. His suspension will likely force 2010 fifth-round pick Otis Hudson into the starting lineup. Perhaps the last thing the Bengals' dysfunctional offense needed eight days before the start of the season was line issues.

Bengals running back Cedric Benson surprisingly has been released … from jail.

That’s the word from Benson’s attorney Sam Bassett, via the Cincinnati Enquirer, who sent out a statement acknowledging that Benson has successfully served his time and now gets to move on with his life and his career.

From Bassett’s statement: “Mr. Benson was released from jail today, having served his sentence. Mr. Benson was credited for his full jail sentence pursuant to policies which apply to every inmate sentenced for a misdemeanor. He worked while in the jail, mopping floors and assisting the paint crews. He received additional credit because of this work. Every inmate in his circumstance is treated the same for purposes of calculating jail time credit. He looks forward to getting back to work and having a good season.”

You’ll recall that Benson was sentenced to 20 days in jail after pleading no contest to a misdemeanor charge. Originally, Benson had agreed to serve his sentence during the Bengals bye week, and it was assumed he would serve less time due to good behavior. While that’s true, he also got credit for working in the jail.

I wonder what his favorite drink is. I bet it's Lone Star. Or some kind of hard punch.
