Former Bears running back Cedric Benson has been cleared of drunk driving and drunk boating, reports Brad Biggs of the Chicago Sun-Times.A grand jury declined to indict Benson on charges stemming from his May and June arrests. It was those arrests that triggered Benson’s termination by the Bears. He he since drawn little interest.“Cedric is grateful to all who have supported him,” his attorney, Sam Bassett, said in a statement. “It was particularly difficult for him to lose the job that he loved with the Bears. He is eager to have an opportunity to again demonstrate that he is a quality running back who can contribute to a winning team. More importantly, he intends to demonstrate that he is worthy of being a positive role model in his community. He has learned much from this ordeal.”

Yea he sucked bad, but that blows for him. I knew that boating thing was very fishy.

Give him a chance at what? He has already proven he is horrible at football.
Cedric Benson > Lendale White
Ehhh...I dunno about all that.Pre-Head-on-collision-with-Mike-Williams Cedrick was pretty damn good. POST-collision Cedrick...not so much. Lendale may be fat, but he does ok with it, imho. Ced doesn't hit the hole, break tackles, or finish the way he did early in his career at Texas...Hasn't since his soph year. That doesn't mean I don't think he could get it all together and help team somewhere. He's certainly at least capable of playing a role. If he has his head straight, he could contribute...potentially a lot.

Chicago homers know: this guy is brutal. It was a terrible pick on draft day and it's even more obvious now. Even his college numbers were suspect. He showed a clear tendency to beat up on the small conference bs matchups and turn in mediocre numbers against ranked teams. All of his attitude and off the field issues were clearly foreshadowed in his college days as well. In Chicago, he looked putrid from start to finish. Matt Forte, who is not exactly Walter Payton Part 2, had more excellent plays in one half of football than Benson did in his entire career with the Bears. His vision is terrible, his heart is elsewhere, and his personality is garbage.

He may get a look from a few teams, but he is absolutely done as a NFL player, and will never amount to anything. Comparing him to Steve Young or Thomas Jones is insulting to both of those players.

:lmao: I have a Benson Jersey for free if any one is still a fan, I have no problem shipping it to you, of course you pay for the shipping. I should have seen this guy was a joke when he sobbed like a baby on draft day

Cedric Benson > Lendale White
Benson may have more physical talent, but White runs much harder and with alot more heart. Look what he did last year with a torn MCL. Benson's worst attribute is his inability to break tackles and hit the whole hard.

heck he couldnt even break hand touches. never seen a big guy go down as easily as he does. but i'm sure some team will waste money giving him another chance to piss off teammates.

Is anyone somewhat troubled that Tank Johnson and Cedric Benson were both cut by the Bears due to charges that were later dropped?

As a fan it was bittersweet to see Tank go. He was effective on the football field but obviously a moron off the field. Even though it hurt the Bears I was glad they cut him loose due to his troubles. As for Benson I was thrilled when he got cut. He was a cancerous player with no heart and I truly think without the arrests management would have given him one more year.

Personally I was impressed when they cut both players as I'd rather pull for a team of guys who aren't showing up in the police blotter. Living in Dallas I see the complete opposite as Jerry Jones and fans would embrace Hitler if he could kick 60 yard field goals. Given the circumstances I can't help but think the Bears attempting to take the high road on these guys (who weren't charged for those events) further exposes Bear's management as the root cause of all their problems.

I must have missed that play.

I don't disagree, but you have to think some one is willing to give a former No. 5 overall pick another chance.
Really? What team is Ryan Leaf on?
I could be wrong, but I do believe Leaf was on another team after his experience with the Chargers. So, if I am not mistaken, he was given a second chance. Granted he did nothing with it, but still had the opportunity.ETA: Seems he was given a few chances according to Wikipedia:
Leaf attempted a comeback with the Dallas Cowboys, who signed him a few weeks after the Buccaneers released him. He failed his first physical and had trouble passing the second because of his wrist.[29] The Cowboys released him in May 2002, after he had appeared in four games—all losses—and thrown for 494 yards with one touchdown and three interceptions.[30] Leaf was signed days later to a one-year contract by the Seattle Seahawks who, like the Buccaneers, planned to let him develop slowly so he could heal from his injuries.[31] The quarterback attended the team's spring minicamps and seemed upbeat about his new team. However, Leaf retired at the age of 26, just before the start of the Seahawks' 2002 training camp, initially offering no explanation, but later citing his injuries

Wasn't Steve Young horrible at football before he went to SF? What about Thomas Jones before he left Arizona? I'm sure there are others...
Benson was considered soft and disliked by his Bear teammates. The NFL is a small fraternity and word gets around. He'll be lucky to get another shot.
I heard one the former player (now talking head) say that teams will give a guy a chance if he has either an attitude problem OR off-field problems, but not both. In Benson's case, it appears that he might have fall into the both category.

touche. Doesn't change the fact that Benson always has and always will suck in the NFL.

My impression of both players situations were the Bears were reacting quickly to Tank Johnson, trying to show the new commish that they will come down hard on players. With Benson I think they were just happy to have an excuse to cut him.
