Bernard Berrian "nearly certain" to not be a Bear next year. (1 Viewer)

The Chicago Sun Times believes Bernard Berrian, Lance Briggs, and Brendon Ayanbadejo are "nearly certain" to leave the Bears in free agency.

The Bears may not deem Berrian worthy of the franchise tag due to Devin Hester's emergence as a receiver. Ayanbadejo could look for somewhere he can play more defense. Briggs might price himself out of Chicago's range.

I think this would be a HUGE mistake by Chi-town.... I know that they like to under-pay players, but Berrian was the only bright spot on that offense this season. Berrian will be one of the better WRs on the market this year and a lot of teams are hurting at WRs... plus; I'm on board for the "Hester will become a good NFL WR"; but if the Bears think he'll be #1 w/ out any help... their nutz.

I just can't see how Berrian deserves to be paid as one of the top 10 WRs in the game. Not good business. Berrian is good, but he's really a WR2, not a WR1.

I have heard the rumors that the Bears are going to ask Muhammed to restructure his deal and let Berrian go. I think that is the right move.

Good move by Berrian...

What's been said earlier I agree with- he's not a #1 WR, he's a good #2 WR.

Let him go to a team like the Colts if Harrison hangs it up- he needs to go somewhere with a defined #1 WR but no clear cut #2 WR for him to really shine. He can't shine as a #1 WR in my mind unless he played for a team like NE

Bad move by Chicago to let all these guys go. They are in serious trouble of being a "rebuilding" team for the next 5 years... that defense is solid but if they let their solid pieces go then as they fill holes they had in 2007, they create new holes for 2008

Signing McNabb if he's released would help keep them from continuing their nose dive... but that defense is starting to go downhill

I am still guessing that he goes to the Raiders to replace Porter as the stretch-the-field option alongside the possession-oriented Curry.

Bad move by the bears but as someone who owns berrian in one of my dynasty leagues this news makes me happy

Not gonna happen. McNabb showed significant improvement towards the end of the season as the knee healed + he's signed at very appealing number for the upcoming season. If someone is to pry him from the Eagles (which I highly doubt) he won't come cheaply.

Not sure that the Colts fit that definition. Anthony Gonzalez= Plus, I doubt that they'd pay decent money for a WR when they have tons of money tied up in their offense already. I'd love to see Berrian in the Bills uniform opposite Evans. The Bills could use a taller WR like Berrian.

berrian would be a massive pickup for the jets. Coles is nearing the end and Berrian would be able to stretch the field for Clemens. He and cotchery would basically be 1 and 1A so he wouldn't see double teams or anything. As long as he isnt demanding top 10 money, sign me up for it right now.

Top 10, No... but Berrian could make a decent WR1 for some team out there. Not many other WRs could put up 71 Recs with that QB situation; also.. there was no other threat on that offense for teams... Just Berrian. I believe half the league will be looking for a WR like him; Ten, SF, TB, Min, etc... even Denver might take notice at him after he made his best catch of the year against them (thats if the Walker is gone). As a Berrian owner; getting out of Chi is a good thing... their offense will be even worse next yr. There are only a couple of other teams that I would consider worse than Chi's offense.

Colts like to home grow their stars... they don't overpay for FAs. And the Bills have Parish; not sure they'll be interested.

Agree, seems like there are a lot of places he could fit. Of the teams you listed, I would only want to see him in Denver.A few more with potential:Philly - doubt it, but the guys they have now are not impressiveNYG - Toomer on his last legs and he would make an interesting pairing with Burress, not sure how sold they are on SSmith2KC - opposite Bowe, but QB issuesCar - Probably doesn't have the size they want opposite Smith, but that could be an explosive pair if Jake comes backOf course, it all comes down to cap space, so lots of things need to shake out first...

As a Berrian dynasty owner, :thanks:

That QB situation hasn't been solved in quite some time and that team is on a downward spiral there are a lot of good situations for him to go to.... as long as it's not Tennesee.

I agree, I don't understand why some ppl don't think he can be a good #1 wr. He was the bears' #1 and put up decent numbers despite having mediocre qbs and no real help from the running game

Isn't Berrian like 6'4?

I'd love to see him in Dallas. Any chance of that happening? I expect Glenn will be done after the playoffs and the Cowboys could use a good #2-3 threat with TO and Witten.

You talking about fantasy potential in the bolded above? How about Cleveland? Suprised they've not been mentioned, but JJ even said he's got one more left in him and he's probably going to leave $2.4MM on the table in 2009. JJ would make a solid #3 next year and maybe make him think about 2009 if Berrian comes aboard. Of course Winslow being there might make Berrian think twice about such a move.

Either way, Berrian is gonna pull lots of interest this offseason, which is going to drive his price tag up.

They just re-signed Crayton for another 3-4 years, I think. Crayton emerged as the season progressed, I thought. Hurd even showed potential. I don't see Berrian coming down there.

yeah... I think they would rather a Thicker / Possesion WR. Plus they did draft Jarret last yr; doubt their ready to give up on him.

I feel like this is a thread full of people who only get to watch Berrian when he is on the Sportscenter highlights.

Berrian drops a lot of passes.

He doesn't go over the middle (maybe only due to the Bears playcalling)

Not the best route runner.

He does have all world speed and can get seperation on the Go route, but it ends there.

Yes, he would be a nice #2 WR on several teams. However now with Drew Rosenhaus as his agent, you can be sure that he will be looking for a 5-6 year 30-35 million deal minimum. He just isn't worth that.

All of this is true, Berrian would excel on the other side of a true #1, but he lacks the necessary tools to be a #1. Not big enough, not enough heart, lazy at times, etc...nevertheless, if goes to a team that plans on using the spread, his fantasy value should rise accordingly...

Eagles postgame last week he was a hot topic... He would be a great fit in Philly. He would do exactly what Stallworth did... Keep the safeties deep and away from the line.. Frees up Curtis and Brown and makes Westy that much more effectives as LB's have to cover him, not the safeties.... I think he and Dallas Clark if available will be the two the Eagles really go after.... Then they draft a CB or Safety first... My $.02

forget about mcnabb. he is staying in philly. unless chicago is willing to part with three first round picks. that was supposedly the asking price to teams that aquired about him before the trade deadline. i think it was the vikings and bears. no link, it was said by a local media guy during a post game show. although there may be a story about it on the eagles website or somewhere.. i dont know.edit to say that i didnt want to hi jack the thread. back to berrian.

Bears give Berrian / 3rd rounder; Browns give Brady Quinn

I know NFL teams don't do these types of trades... and I know nothing of Clevelands Cap Space if they can sign Anderson and Berrian... but this would be a great deal for both sides. Bears get 1st round talent at the QB, Browns get an great #2 paired with Edwards.

If thats not possible.... Bears give Berrian / 2nd; Browns give Anderson.

Ya Berrian seems to want a big payday....its not a good #1....he would be a great #2 tho.......as stated he drops passes.....doesnt fight for the ball....isnt aggresive....never see him over the middle but has great speed and makes some spectacular catches if you can live with the ones he drops.

Chicago aint gonna hurt themselves cap wise for players that want to break the bank which this year are Briggs, Berrian, and the special teamer who I dont even want to attempt his name.

I'd be more then happy to redo Moose's deal...bring in Bryant Johnson from the Cardinals and expect Hester to make some strides at WR for next year....they still got two great catching TE's as well. Losing Berrian especially if he wants to break the bank wont hurt that badly.

Berrian & Cotchery & Lj Smith in Jets green....Coles will not be a NY Jet next season IMHO.
Laveranues Coles says the Jets told his agent that they're concerned about Coles' age and declining production.Coles, 30, wants a contract extension and doesn't believe he'll get one from the Jets. A high ankle sprain Coles played through in the second half of the season was most of the reason for his numbers being down. Coles says in a "worst case scenario" he'll finish out his final two years with the Jets.

at 1st I was like "No Way"... then I looked at the contract Info and I think your right.

Contract Information for Laveranues Coles

3/9/2005: Signed a five-year, $25 million contract. The deal includes $8 million guaranteed. 2007: $3 million, 2008: $5 million, 2009: $6 million, 2010: Free Agent

I like Coles as a WR... but 11 Mil for the next 2 yrs is a lot of cash for what he brings. The Jets have plenty of cap space to keep him at that price and he is a good WR.. but hes always on the Injury report. That deal needs to be redone before next season or let him walk. Berrian paired next to Cotch would be nice.

I rather keep Baker than ditch him for LJ. Baker will have 3 yrs experience with the offense now and made much improvements this yr.

I disagree with the people who don't think Berrian is a #1 WR. He absolutely is. If you want to argue whether he is an average #1 WR or not than that is fair, but calling him a good #2 is incorrect.

Baker is horribly underutilized(which boggles my mind considering how often Pennington would check down) I think he' a good TE.And Coles needs to come back. He's stil very good when healthy, and Cotchery needs to avoid double teams to continue to develop.

I have to disagree with some of the stuff you posted here. Berrian does go over the middle as a matter of fact he runs ALL of the routes you expect a well rounded WR to run. He just doesnt run the deep routes. I thought this also and was surprised by what I saw in 2006. He runs all the routes. As far as him dropping passes. Hmm this year he had a case of the dropies, but in 06 his hands were very good. I trust his hands. The best? No. Good hands? Yes."He does have all world speed and can get seperation on the Go route, but it ends there."Total disagreement with that statement. Watch a few bears games and see his routes. Come backs. Sqaure Outs all of those.

 Really? What makes him special? He is an average WR in NFL, and I have not seen much to make me think otherwise.

I am a die hard Bears fan and got to watch a majority of the games this year. I do Like Berrian and would love to see him in a Bears Uniform next season. However, I do not want to see Chicago Spend top Dollar on a WR that can be easily replaced. When a good CB can Jam Berrian at the LOS, he really does become ineffective.

I would be interested in him going to Denver. They need a speed WR to compliment Marshall and Stokley. And with Cutler's arm strength they would be a pretty good fit. But he would probably want to much money though as they have a lot of holes to fix and are somewhat constrained in the cap (16 mil last I heard but that doesn't account for Lepsis, Walker, and hopefully Gold)

For those interested Bernard Berrian caught exactly 2 passes over the middle for 41 yards in 15 games this season.

So please continue with how well rounded he is.

Not really what you mean when you say average NFL receiver? being the #1 receiver is a lot harder than being the #2 receiver on a team. So are you saying an average #1 or an average #2? or are you saying that if there are 150 WR's in the league he is about 75th (the average)? He has #1 WR speed and can go deep with the best in the league. He runs good outs and come backs. He cuts pretty well, but doesn't aggressively fight for balls. He had some drops this year, but in 06 his hands were excellent and I think overall his hands are pretty good. I think he is Chambers with better speed which puts him in the lower middle of the pack for #1 WR's (Chambers is near the bottom). Let's put it this way, I think he is better than almost all #2's in the league and better than about 1/3 of the #1's and has upside to be a top 10-15 guy.

LINK?BTW, your point about how much you are willing to spend on him is valid. I haven't looked up what the average dollars are for #1 WR's (I am sure that is out there), but I think he would get around the median because the very top few may skew the numbers. I would think 4- 4.5 mil is the right number (estimate)

Not all WR are needed for that... Come to Phily Mr. Berrian... Brown and Curtis will get the middle stuff.. Just go deep and keep the safeties there!

Sorry, I should have been a bit more clear. I would probably put Berrian in top 30-35 range. IMO his upside would top out in the 18-22 range. You are correct, he does run the go,outs, and comebacks like an all pro. But that is where it ends. He runs a decent slant route, nothing special. He can not take a quick a screen and turn it into anything. A total non-factor going across the middle. His blocking is sub par.Hands are becoming more of an issue. It wasn't really the amount of drops this season as it was the "drive killer" drops. Again looking at his stat breakdown, he caught 43 of his 71 passes outside the hashmarks. That is his comfort zone. IMO a good #1 should be all over the field. I think the Chris Chambers comparison is right on the money. Berrian is the type of guy that would thrive in the right system. If he is your #1, hopefully the team has a very solid corps behind him. If you are relying on him to be the bigtime gamebreaker, you will end up with similar production to his past season in Chicago. This season's FA WR group isn't very strong. Berrian is probably the best of the bunch, which seems to get people thinking (maybe hoping) that he is this stud WR that has been trapped in a Bad Bears O, when that just isn't the case.As for the posters who think it would be a mistake by the Bears to let him walk. In reality it is actually the smart thing to do. Berrian will be asking for top 10 money, and will probably get it. He just isn't worth that. At least not to the Bears. The Bears can plug in Mark Bradley and lose just a slight bit of production, while saving a great deal of money.
