Bernie Sanders HQ! *A decent human being. (4 Viewers)

Hillary is actually under 50% in NH, she sits at 45%. Warren is pulling in 24% and she isn't even in the race. Bernie opens up at 12% and he hasn't stepped foot to campaign in the state yet.

I am sure upon hearing those numbers the Hillary2016 people are now in full panic mode.
45/36 with the 36 with two clearly progressive pols is probably not what she was expecting.

On February 10th she was at 69% in NH.

For Pete's sake it is a poll conducted by Gravis Marketing who does political robocalls. This outfit is not exactly talked about in the same breath as Gallup, Pew, or NBC-Maris.

Actually I deleted that last part before your response after looking it over.

Also the NBC poll excluded Warren. She's been pretty consistent in that 40+ range, though there have been some in the 56-69 range.

From the article you linked:

“[Clinton] does not have a legitimate primary opponent and she is on the defense from the Republicans,” he said. “Once the debates start and a front runner appears, we believe Clinton will then be able to draw a contrast and her poll numbers will bounce back.”

The Gravis poll didn't even look at likely voters from what I can tell. And I might be mistaken living on the west coast, but isn't Massachusetts and Vermont fairly close to New Hampshire? A lot of this has to do with name recognition and the fact that Warren and Sanders getting that degree of support in a New England state this far away from the actual primary really doesn't mean that much.

As much as I detest Warren I'd take her wackiness any day over Sanders. He would be the GOP's dream opponent
This surprises me. Your whole political shtick is "Romney good, Warren bad."
and Bernie is worse
Anybody worse than him or is he as bad as it gets?
Pat Paulsen is still dead right? Kucinich running again??

looks like its Bernie at the bottom

This whole he'd get slaughtered in the general doesn't take into account that many of his positions are pretty popular. Higher minimum wage, more taxes for the rich, etc. Those poll really well.

Americans are far away from ever voting for a Socialist. As bad as some "progressives" would like to think otherwise- it just will not happen. Not now or the foreseeable future anyways. Hell, you won't even be able to get the left sided party to vote for one let along the general populace.

Can someone/anyone detail what the difference is between Sanders's views as a self-avowed socialist and the views of most progressives?

For instance, where would Sanders go that a progressive would say oh no that's too far?

Or is Sanders not using the term properly, or in the "Democratic Socialist" European way so that there really is no difference?

What makes him a "socialist"?

He actually usually calls himself a Democratic Socialist, not just socialist, but he's a bit loose with his terms considering he's basically alone.

Good article from New Republic on it:

http://www.newrepublic.com/article/121680/bernie-sanders-democratic-socialist-not-just-socialist

From Sanders' own mouth:

I think [democratic socialism] means the government has got to play a very important role in making sure that as a right of citizenship all of our people have healthcare; that as a right, all of our kids, regardless of income, have quality childcare, are able to go to college without going deeply into debt; that it means we do not allow large corporations and moneyed interests to destroy our environment; that we create a government in which it is not dominated by big money interest. I mean, to me, it means democracy, frankly. That’s all it means.

Again his views are fairly mainstream. America voted in the Kenyan Usurper. You might want to be careful with absolutes.

Yeah he is so crazy and fringe no one would ever vote for someone who supports those lunatic ideas.

Thanks. - Couple different things here:

"I think [democratic socialism] means the government has got to play a very important role in making sure that as a right of citizenship all of our people have healthcare; that as a right, all of our kids, regardless of income, have quality childcare, are able to go to college without going deeply into debt"

- I could see that very well being a progressive tenet. Personally I've said before I could see public hospitals being a good idea, like the Charity Hospital system here, but no one seems to talk about that, not even progressives. Now I wouldn't call it a "right" either but again public hospitals and clinics to me is inherently socialist and I might be in favor of it. But again no takers, not even from progressives.

"that it means we do not allow large corporations and moneyed interests to destroy our environment; that we create a government in which it is not dominated by big money interest. I mean, to me, it means democracy, frankly. That’s all it means."

- I agree with this. I am wholeheartedly against amending the 1st Amendment but I agree with this by a wide variety of means. But I don't think this is exclusively a "progressive" point of view.

So what's everybody's problem with socialism? Is it that old "I work too hard for my money to hand it over to a bunch of lazy teat-suckers" meme?

The problem is that many (most?) people in this country think socialism, communism, and fascism are all the same thing.

I've met him a number of times.

He's the most normal guy type politician I've ever met.

He's quite genuine. If he says he's going to do XYZ, it'll either happen or you'll read about him trying and failing like he didn't have enough support from other members of congress. He gets real upset about some things in this country- it really hurts his pride, you can just sort of tell.

There's like 3 unions left in this country, but they all seem to love Bernie.

The VT National guard is very active. It would probably surprise you to read about all they do whether it be Iraq/Afghanistan or Katrina help or help during the hurricane a few years back. He takes a lot of pride in the military and is always praising them. I don't know that he had a say in whether they do this or that, but you watch his face light up when he discusses them and appreciates them and...it would have to be a good thing for our military to have a guy like him as president.

Vermont was hit harder than most states by the recession and some towns really looked like ghost-towns with businesses closed and some ridiculously high number of unemployed. The value of the dollar dropping created an almost road block to Canadians and oh so many businesses just stopped getting their regular customers. He was extremely vocal about his ideas how to save things and about American products being made and sold in America. He looked almost furious about a bunch of chinese quickly made plastic items.

He goes to funerals. He goes to hospitals. He actually visits factories and businesses in his day to day.

On FB, he seems to strongly dislike everything about the rich getting richer and tax breaks for the rich. He is oh so often discussing how the average american needs more $ more opportunity.

He lives in the public eye and doesn't shy away from it. His people put videos on youtube or fb all the time.

This negativity toward the rich is likely to cost him huge in a campaign that will be based more on money than the actual candidates.

He's got a whole lot of normal american points of views that I think people can really relate to. In a popularity contest, he'd have an excellent chance of beating Hilary. Now that he's announced his campaign I'm sure garbage will come out. It'll be that he fought for one million union workers but the one he didn't will cry loudly in public. It'll be how he voted 800k times to support the troops, but once he didn't for some odd reason. I'm somewhat afraid for him to get beaten up for the mistakes he's made or poor decisions he's made.

His temper is real. At some point, some reporter is going to ask enough careless stupid questions and he's going to show the world. I'm curious if people will think the reporter shouldn't be wasting his time or if he had a right to be angry. I'm not predicting what the issue will be, but I guarantee we see his temper and it'll be interesting how the public reacts to that. Personally, I'm fine with someone getting angry and throwing a fit at some stupid law that would cost americans jobs. I don't really care if our leader is stoic. I'm fine with it being obvious how he feels about an issue.

He's a real good guy and has done an excellent job representing his people. I'm sure Hilary will weasel her way into making backdoor promises and crooked deals to getting a giant campaign fund that'll eventually defeat him. In the meantime though, I hope Americans take the time to check out Bernie.

I am sure upon hearing those numbers the Hillary2016 people are now in full panic mode.
Bernie will have no trouble winning over New Hampshire since it's his neighboring state and he's been so vocal about their no sales tax no income tax model. He's a flat out fan of their state and people know it. Outside the Northeast, I'm not optimistic.

If he can get 1 million people to give him 100 dollars he can make life rough on Hillary in the primaries. And with the decks cleared for her highness who else is getting the anti-hillary money on the left?

Yea.... Obama and Sanders are one in the same. Great comparison there.

He won't make it tough on Hillary, he'll make it easy on her. Hillary likes Bernie, and Beenie likes Hillary. This will be s very congenial campaign. They will disagree on a few issues but you won't hear them attack each other. There won't be any "dirty tricks" against Bernie. And sorry NC, there won't be any anti-Hillary money going to Bernie because there is no anti-Hillary money.

Sanders is running to discuss ideas that are important to him and more power to him. It's good for Hillary because it allows her to delineate her own thinking to the American people, and it allows the press to have the pretense of a contest within the Democratic Party. But when it comes to the caucuses and primaries, forget it. Hillary will win every last one of them without any real contest.

Yeah there is anti- Hillary money. This idea that everyone in the party can't wait to kiss her ring is ludicrous.

Bernie is doing about the same number in both NH & IA. I think NCC is right that Bernie could do some damage via small ball, gather up all those little donations Obama did so well with in 08. - Why would a small contributor give to Hillary? She has got tons of money and your 100 won't mean jack. - If Bernie can really hit the ground and campaign non-stup and come out of IA & NH he could hit the rest of the US with a surge. - I think if Hillary wins with <50% in those two states there will be shaken faith about the general. - I agree with Tim that she will steer clear of attacking Bernie but I do think or hope or expect he will bring inload full broadsides on her financial strings.

It is the only reason Sanders goes from no chance to having the other team in victory formation with time running out and you need a fumble returned for a TD chance to win. Hillary is easy to not like and there are a lot of people who don't like her. Which is the reason why I think she will end up losing in the primary as long as the GOP survivor is not a complete dipstick. The steps in planning her move were well thought out- Sec of State to bolster her resume but not a partisan position. Exit to have some time off of the stage which always improves attitude and numbers and then make a run. Some details were maybe over thought like having her own emails to protect herself but the general strategy was brilliant. Is it enough to over take the easiness to not like her? Likely not enough for Sanders but in the general, I think she is going to have some real problems that some of the Democratic party don't think is going to be there when they look at polling data in the here and now.

He does not have the charisma that Obama had. He is pretty much the exact picture of the 'old white guy' almost to an amusing extent, so he gets no bump for being the first FILL IN THE BLANK President. He will get far left Democratic, anti-Hillary and protest votes. His best chance is he gets too much steam before the protest votes realize that they may actually end up giving him the nod.

But when it comes to the caucuses and primaries, forget it. Hillary will win every last one of them without any real contest.
Yeah there is anti- Hillary money. This idea that everyone in the party can't wait to kiss her ring is ludicrous.
Not really My sense is that this is largely true actually.

However, I should correct myself- there might be some money. As I mentioned before, Campaign United allowed Sheldon Adelson to singlehandledly keep New Gingrich afloat, and Foster Friez did the same thing for Santorum for several months. So you never know. There are progressive billionaires out there. If one them, perhaps a George Soros, became enamored with Sanders that could make a difference. But I doubt it actually happens. Hillary Clinton is going to be our next President, and people want a seat at the table.

I'd be stunned if he ever seriously attacks Hillary Clinton. He will attack Republicans and conservatives, and state his respectful disagreement with President Obama on TPP. But all of his vitriol will be reserved, I predict, for the GOP.

He doesn't 'attack'. Not his style.

This may have already been stated, but wouldn't it seem as feasible that Bernie entering the race will have an effect to show Hillary as less liberal and more Center (or whoever else may win the nomination) therefore boosting the change in the federal election? Cruz can call Hill a liberal all he wants, but in comparison to sanders?

This almost certainly will happen.
