Had to go other and give the nod to Buffalos own Snapcase-Progression Through Unlearning

If I had to pick from the list, probably Foos or Third Eye Blind

Hard choice between three in the poll, and voted Bob Dylan. A few other favorites not in the poll are the Old 97s "Too far to Care", Whiskeytown's "Stranger's Almanac", Etta James' "Love's Been Rough on Me", and Alison Krauss' "So Long So Wrong".

OK Computer will rightly dominate and the gap between it and second place is vast. But also listened to Modest Mouse, Elliott Smith, Ben Folds Five, The Verve and Third Eye Blind albums a lot.

It's weird, because there are a bunch of albums from this year that I like better than any of the albums from 1996. Strong year, but OKC is in all-time great territory.
I do not want to start this debate in here. I want to enjoy Radiohead but I just cant. I did listen to The Bends for the first time the other day and I thought it was OK. But I have tried OK computer and Kid A and just didnt get it

Some others I liked:

Mag Earwhig!- Guided By Voices

Portishead- Portishead

Big Loada- Squarepusher

Radiator - Super Furry Animals

Wu-Tang Forever- Wu-Tang Clan

Dig Your Own Hole- The Chemical Brothers

Dots And Loops- Stereolab

New Forms- Roni Size & Reprazent

Supa Dupa Fly- Missy ‘Misdemeanor’ Elliot

Modus Operandi- Photek

F♯A♯∞- Godspeed You! Black Emperor

Young Team- Mogwai

Buena Vista Social Club- Buena Vista Social Club

Arkology- Lee "Scratch" Perry

Dig Me Out- Sleater-Kinney

Give It Back!- The Brian Jonestown Massacre

Indoor Living- Superchunk

Bricolage- Amon Tobin

Preemptive Strike - DJ Shadow

From Our Living Room To Yours- American Analog Set

The Man The King The Girl- Deerhoof

I used to really like Radiohead before I frequented the FFA and my perception of them got messed up the dooshiness of their fans. Despite that, OK Computer is an all-time great.

This must be the year the generation gap got so large I just couldn't straddle it any more and started to only buy country albums.

I like Radiohead but I don't understand the huge fanboy love they get. OK Computer was good and has arguably their best songs on it, but it has some filler too. Third Eye Blind doesn't have a bad song on it. Completely solid from start to finish.

That's cool. They're probably my favorite band evar, so I'm not exactly the fairest judge either. But it's pretty universally hailed as a great album, "Album of the Decade", etc., so I think it's going to run away with the "best of 1997" votes.

In a similar boat, have been trying to get into OK Computer, but not really clicking for me. Just ordered The Bends from the library and will give it a shot.

no reason to jump the gun- I think theres still lots to talk about for 97. some other interesting albums this year- that Spiritualized would've been a top choice in other years, imo. And I thought Stereolab kept getting better with each album. But a bunch of bands I liked seemed to go backwards too- especially BJM and Portishead with their sophomore ablums.and for me, my tastes ran all over the place wiyhout a real focus (aside from OK Comp) beginning this year: indie, drum&bass, women/indie hiphop, indian beats. I don't think I could tell you what was "popular" for the year at all (radio/saleswise)

Bouncing souls s/t.

Also the h2o album released in 97 was Thicker Than Water I think. Not FTTW.

Shoot, you are right. My bad. ill editThat Bouncing Souls album was great. Thats the black cover with some yellow and orange right?Fro- I know you like them, I think FTTW was their best. How bout you. I know you said your buddy used to sing with them in Philly. I did Freddys part of Guilty a few times. I was also in a short lived band with Adam and Todd Friend. Those were great times for punk and hardcore

some dooshiness from the haters too.not my favorite band, but I genuinely like a lot of what they do and appreciate/respect that they're at least trying out new things- usually successfully- each time out.

Ya. That was the one.

Since you're an obvious h2o fan, how would you rank their first 3 albums?

Who the hell is Elliott Smith

Someone give me something to listen to from him
lol, he's the only guy who has ever challenged Radiohead as my favorite band/singer ever. He's most well known for the Good Will Hunting soundtrack, which featured songs from Either/Or. His song "Miss Misery" was nominated for an Oscar that year but lost to that Titanic debacle.

Mostly quiet, singer-songwriter type stuff. Probably not your speed. Here's

agreed. I do like their music, just not as much as I used to.

All that said, listening to OKC again right now, and do have to say that "Paranoid Android" is a really cool tune. On to "Subterranean Homesick Alien".

I think you got me confused with somebody else. I made it onto stage and sang with them a few times but never knew anybody in Philly with them. Met them a few times when they came to Pittsburgh. Good guys.

S/t

FTTW

Thicker than water

Warped 98 was the first concert I ever went. First time I saw h2o. Blew me away more than any band there. They were freaking awesome.

That's cool. I don't care for Elvis.

Some others for honorable mention-

311- Transistor

Blur- Blur

The Crystal Method- The Crystal Method

Silver Chair- Freak Show

Modest Mouse

others I think that have not been mentioned yet:

Wyclef Jean - The Carnival

Cherry Poppin' Daddies - Zoot Suit Riot

Prodigy - The Fat of the Land

Green Day - Nimrod

Good Lord. OK Computer, Brighten the Corners, and Lonesome Crowded West in the same year. Probably have to go with Radiohead, although I probably listen to Pavement more.

never really got Radiohead either. The Bends wasn't all bad but evertyhing else has never caught on with me.

Foo Fighters is by far my favorite album from this group. surprised its not getting more love.

good stuff. This is the exact type of stuff Im getting into these days. Would much rather listen to Rancids acoustic version of their latest then the electric one. Thanks

Radiohead doesn't need my vote, so I voted Ben Folds.

OK Computer is only my 3rd favorite RH album anyway.

I really really really dug that BFF album. Had never heard anything like it. I wore it out.I can't stand him at this point though. His solo stuff is awful and the BFF just sounds old and used up.

I wore out their first album. Saw them any time they came to play within a 50 mile radius. Loved their second album, too, but after that it was a rapid descent into mediocrity for him.Slight hijack, but we used to always wait outside the clubs to say hi to the band after shows, try to grab a copy of the setlist, etc. Ben and co. were always really cool. Then a couple years later "Brick" became a minor radio hit, and they were playing some big festival in Philly. I got backstage passes from my college radio station, and when we went back to see them they were total #####. Not that we deserved any special treatment or anything, but I'm sure they recognized us but it was like "here is a pile of photos of us, you can take one and we will sign it and then you have to leave, and also we are sponsored by Heineken." In conjunction with the quality of their music going downhill, I pretty much stopped being a fan after that point. I do like some of his solo songs but nothing's as good as that first album was.
