This was being debated between me and a friend. I love his Berlin trilogy and have always said Low was his best, whereas he stuck with Ziggy as the best. I can see why Ziggy, Hunky Dory and his other Glam-era works are great albums, there are some truly fantastic songs on them, but Low just blows me away every time I listen to it.

I know it's cheating but if I were stranded on an island...ChangesBowie would be in my short list.

Thought Hunky Dory would get more run than what it's gotten thus far.

btw, I've been totally loving the BBC Sessions 2 disc compilation discs lately. <_<

Singles: 1969-1993 is pretty amazing but going with a compilation takes away from how great some of his albums stand on their own. Bowie was able to put out incredible singles that also worked really well in the context of their albums. You don't get that much today, the best singles artists can't put together a cohesive album to save their lives.

:lmao:

Just thinking of Bowie the other day as I was blasting Fame on the radio. He's just one of those artists I never looked into even though I like almost everything I've heard from him through the years. I'm gonna pick up a few of the recommended ones from this thread. :lmao:

This. The greatest hits has been in my Top Ten rotation for 20 yrs, but no studio album has been there in my entire listening career. I've always seen Bowie like i have Elvis Costello - songs guys more than albums guys. The best of their work just overpowers their lesser songs & keeps any of their albums from becoming realised visions that resonate with me.

We all know you only like the Berlin trilogy because Brian Eno produced them so be honest.kidding of course.... I know he didn't produce them but couldn't resist  By the way I voted Ziggy sorry.

I couldn't disagree more. Bowie and Costello (and Neil Young for that matter) have always been album artists for me. Bowie took it one step further and created unique personas to go along with each album. The Ziggy-era songs fit together as do the Thin White Duke and Berlin Bowie. That said, I can't remember the last time I listed to side two of either Low or "Heroes".

Interesting...that's good to know. I usually like to delve into the albums but you think getting the greatest hits would be the way to go? I would imagine I've heard most of his hits a billion times but thought his less accessable songs would be like finding hidden gold.

It's very close for me between Hunky Dory and Ziggy. These are two essential, outstanding studio albums. I went with Hunky Dory, but you can really flip a coin.

OK, just checked out Changesbowie on Amazon. I knew every song except for Diamond Dogs. While I like most of the songs, it's clear I'm looking more for his older songs as opposed to his dance stuff.

It was always fun to buy Bowie albums when they came out - thru "Let's Dance" anyway - cuz his "changes" were always interesting, but they havent held up for me as set pieces. Still, album "mining" is always a blast that i highly recommend, especially with great artists. I have a number of friends in wkend bands and we're always trading "songs that time forgot" that are fun to update or translate. Bowie's most worthy in that regard cuz, unlike most avant-gardists, he never forgot to rock out. Enjoy.

How could you not know Diamond Dogs? Great song.I grew up with Bowie. I was spinning his vinyl at the age of twelve. Couldn't get enough of Ziggy. Literally would play that album every day after school. I also remember arguing about what instrument was used in

at the 2:59 mark. I'm positive it's a tuba but my buddy always insisted it's a bass. He's since passed away but I'd like to clear this up.Bowie will always be cemented in my top 10...maybe top 5. Guy was the boobs. Honestly don't have a favorite Bowie album but I celebrate his entire catalog.

back in the day in JrHS & HS if you like Bowie you were considered a ###### or to circumvent the filter : a poofter

only later in college(Scary Monsters & after) did I feel comfy pimping Bowie

I remember a kid in JrHS getting a major wedgie in the gym locker room for wearing a Bowie tshirt

Its Ziggy and it really should not be close.

I love albums that have a kick ### song on track 1. "5 Years" is an insanely good opening song

So a friend of mine gave me MP3's of like 12 Bowie. Just knowing the hits sucks. There is so much more to him than that. Never knew how great of a writer he was. Just some amazing music.

Hunky dory but the man who sold the world needs more love. The distorted bass on that album rules. Early ween and Andrew Weiss definitely influenced by that sound.

Changesonebowie isn't a Bowie record. That's the label taking the singles and putting them on something to make money on stuff a second time. Most of the best stuff isn't even on it.

Perfect.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nm1tlIcxNegBut this is close, as it was Fripp on the e-bow and Adrian Belew on the tour...the comment is right, I'm not sure this is a cover.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H36A-p698WI
