This one is pretty good but I'd say this one is the best of them all.Question: What is the best rookie card for all-around quality of the players pictured, not just for one star?
I submit this one for starters.
I have all those and over 100 Bonds rookies including the Topps and Donruss updates and the Fleer special edition ones. I probably have 50-60 Griffey rookies also, think the Bowman is worth the most IIRC. I also have some full packs with Griffey Jr on top, think they are Donruss rack packs.Depending on which card and condition, sure and you can easily sell them on ebay but probably not at the prices you once thought you could getAre these things still worth money? I mean obviously the super rare ones are but what about cards like Griffey or Ripken rookies? Rareish cards?
Maybe $20-40 for Griffey UD, $20-30 for Ripken 82 Topps
Mattingly 84 donruss under 20
etc

Same exact thing here. You basically said exactly what I was gonna say. I was a casual collector starting in about 85, but those 1987 cards are when I started buying packs whenever I could. Probably matters that this was also right around the huge rise of Beckett, which turned out to be a complete scam.1987 will always be my favorite. First year I was super serious about collecting and just remember the wood bat borders covering my bedroom floor as I sorted for hours and checking prices in Beckett.

Bonus card
Love the old 86 Fleer basketball I have PSA sets registered for 1986 Fleer basketball, 1981 Topps baseball, and the 1992 Team Pinnacle set.Best pull was finding a nearly full wax box of 86 Fleer Basketball at a run down Ben Franklin store in 1989. Price: 25 cents a pack.
I don't recall a specific location/sequencing on 89UD Griffey. Was there any truth to finding certain cards at certain locations of the box?
Wasn't sure if it was 89UD but I recall the last pack on the bottom right was always a Griffey.
Anyone heard that?
So awesome.Well I couldn't resist last night after thinking about this thread. Looked up ECs rookie card on Ebay and got one in really good shape for 36 bucks. It's not graded but looks great to me. Slightly off center I think which probably takes it down some. I changed my avatar to it if anyone wants to see it.
Then I looked through my baseball cards this morning trying to find that Henderson rookie and it's not there. I must have sold it back in the 90s due to being hard up for money.
I have two graded 88 Ryan rookies if you are interested....The Henderson Rookie was my Holy Grail. My two favorite players of all time were Henderson and Nolan Ryan. I knew I would never have enough cash for the Ryan rookie. I have his cards from 1970 to 1980, but never his rookie. But the Rickey Rookie, that was always just out of my grasp.Still got mine. Looks awesome in the plastic screwdown case.1980 for the 80's for me. Still remember having that Rickey Henderson card and how good it looked.![]()
In the mid to late 90s Becket came out with a software program on a CD that allowed you to create your collection, and the magic internet would update the prices automatically as they changed. I think it worked on my Commodore connected to AOLYes!! I had most of my cards in sleeves with small white stickers in the upper right corner. The current Beckett price written in pencil. I would go and update every single month.Anyone else still remember the rush you felt getting the new Beckett each month and going through and pricing all of your cards....then fist pumping when you saw the price bolded with the up arrow next to it?
At one point, tried my hand on my 486 computer at writing a spreadsheet program to keep track. Didn't get far.
This card had the most price increase during my time of keeping track.
No. Al Leiter. It was a picture of someone else. They corrected it at some point during the season. Those early error cards were $$$$Yep, now were old and gAnyone else still remember the rush you felt getting the new Beckett each month and going through and pricing all of your cards....then fist pumping when you saw the price bolded with the up arrow next to it?
Mark Leiter?Same for me. Always looking for that Al Leiter error card....1987 will always be my favorite. First year I was super serious about collecting and just remember the wood bat borders covering my bedroom floor as I sorted for hours and checking prices in Beckett.
Yea, I always heard the pictured guy was his brother Mark back in the day but some googling just now and it was some dude name Steve GeorgeNo. Al Leiter. It was a picture of someone else. I had a full-sized poster of this on my wall growing up. Dude was an absolute beast and that Nike advertising campaign was off the charts great.Yes!! ...I have that one too. The football version would be John David Crow. He had an excuse for looking ugly though.Worst looking guy in the best looking, classic card. I have several of these.
The Nuschler faceI collected over 500 Will Clark baseball cards between '87 and 1990? Maybe that number was actually closer to 1,000.
I would trade any bundle of players for him, it didn't matter. I also fondly remember loading up on Chris Sabo and Walt Weiss rookie cards in 1988 as they were the NL/AL ROTY. They had to be destined for stardom!
I really like the classic look of the 1989 Topps card.

The 1989 Upper Deck boxes if you got them from the case you could figure out which packs had Griffey cards in them from the locations. I stumbled upon 4 boxes at a local convenience store in 1989. They were hard to find back then. Bought all 4 and popped them open. Not a single Griffey. Whoever their distributor was had gone through their allotments and pulled all the Griffey packs.I don't recall a specific location/sequencing on 89UD Griffey. Was there any truth to finding certain cards at certain locations of the box?

The only specific sequencing I remembering finding was on the 88 Donruss Gregg Jefferies card. This only worked on the 4 window display packaging Donruss was doing at the time. So for instance, if a certain card was showing on the front of one of the windows, a Jefferies card was behind that card.
IIRC, my brother discovered a second sequencing/location with a early 90s set, but I don't recall the details. And there was also the aspect that the late 80s Topps rack pack contents could be easily searched without opening the packs.
Oh yes. I have a #### load of worthless Ben McDonalds. Juan Gonzalez too!!! Gold Leaf. Have Frank Thomas and Sammy Sosa as well. I also bought 20 UD Sosa's for .50 a piece in 1990 they went as high as $20 bucks a pop LOL.Remember those 1990 Leaf Rookie cards? These packs were crazy in price back then. I could neither afford to buy a pack (smart) or trade for these two cards...

89 Hoops basketball was packed in patterns and has see-thru packaging. Got about 50 David Robinson RCs that way. Now they aren't worth jack.I don't recall a specific location/sequencing on 89UD Griffey. Was there any truth to finding certain cards at certain locations of the box?

The 80's had some terrible looking cards.
except 1987Yep. I was 11 at the time, just got my paper route and bought way too many of these, plus fleer and donruss. 3 years later I stopped collecting entirely.1987 will always be my favorite. First year I was super serious about collecting and just remember the wood bat borders covering my bedroom floor as I sorted for hours and checking prices in Beckett.
Lol...I can't believe I actually thought I had a retirement nest egg on my hands at one time...
yep. I did trade 90% of my collection when I graduated college and had to move. My parents wanted space in their basement. In exchange I walked away with a playstation and a handful of games.
I might need to do some searching tonight.Ricky JordanI collected over 500 Will Clark baseball cards between '87 and 1990? Maybe that number was actually closer to 1,000.

You're not going to find anything cheaper. Set building? Isn't there like 6 cards in a pack now?Just bought a few packs of 2016 Topps Opening Day with the kids.
They enjoyed opening and looking at them, searching for Mets.
Are these the cheapest baseball cards to buy?
Packs were .99, I assume there isn't anything less but just thought i'd ask.
Looking for something cheap where the kids and I can build a set.
