I am revisiting the excellent History of Hip-Hop series by The Rub / Brooklyn Radio.  Great compilations there...  East-West-South, all the boroughs, East Bay vs. L.A., Gangsta vs. Consciousness, all the samples, all the 808s, it's all in there.

Since there are only 15 choices available, I'd figure I had to have some cutoffs.  Defend your selection with your top 3 or 5 tracks from that year.

My vote is for 1993.  Best tracks:

Wu Tang - C.R.E.A.M.
A Tribe Called Quest - Award Tour
Cypress Hill - Insane In The Brain
Too $hort – Get In Where You Fit In
Ultramagnetic MCs – Two Brothers With Checks
Black Moon - Who Got da Props?

But sooooo many classics

1999 or 1991

1999

Mos Def - Black On Both Sides
Rawkus Records - Soundbombing II
Enimem - The Real Slim Shady LP
Dre - 2001
The Roots - Things Fall Apart
Pharoahe Monch - Internal Affairs
Jay-Z - Vol 3. The Life And Times...

1991

Tribe Called Quest - The Low End Theory
Black Sheep - A Wolf In Sheep's Clothing
Ice Cube - Death Certificate
Del The Funky Homosapien - I Wish My Brother George
N.W.A. - #####z 4 Life or Efil4zaggin
Geto Boys - We Can't Be Stopped
De La Soul - De La Soul Is Dead

the defense rests.

Is this the poll where middle age white FBGs vote for the year they turned 18?

Just kidding. Kidding.  Just kidding about kidding.

I voted '93 - because of 36 Chambers, Midnight Marauders, Enta da Stage, Naughty by Nature, Onyx

But now when I think about it,  '95 was probably better - Shook ones album, Only Built 4 Cuban Linx, Ol' Dirty, GZA, the better Onyx, AZ,  I Shall Proceed, MC's act like they don't know, Group Home, one of the better Pac albums - 95 on volume was killer

96 is probably up there

Fugees - The Score, Outkast - ATLiens, Nas - It Was Written, De La Soul - Stakes is High, Tupac - All Eyez on Me, Roots - Illadelph Half Life, Too $hort - Gettin it, etc...

The Score and All Eyez released same day

I haven't voted yet because I'm waiting to see if I can be convinced off this year.
