Carson was before my time. He retired in 1992, no way I saw any of his prime. I have seen enough clips, and watched enough features on him to know how great he was, and his general personality in the chair was without question the best. Everyone loved him. He was a more likable person than Dave. Dave would tell you that. Actual hosting, in the chair, Carson was better, probably
much better.
But in terms of which one I prefer, it's not even close. Letterman's show was just a lot more interesting. Dave's finding of odd characters who would turn up from time to time, Rupert Jee, Sirajul and Mujibar, Larry 'Bud' Melman, that's the first thing I can think of where I prefer him to Carson. Top 10 list, viewer mail, Dave sending his mom on assignment, all the dumb stuff they used to do on the street.
And the musical guests!! Sorry, Carson doesn't hold a candle. Cool up and coming bands all had their first appearances on his show, not Carson's. Bringing on Darlene Love for
30 years to sing
Christmas (Baby Please Come Home), with each performance getting more elaborate is just the coolest thing ever. And for the
same show to be doing the Beastie Boys from the
subway to the theater in real time (which somehow was cooler than the band playing
Sabotage live with instruments)?
Future Islands Janelle Monae George Clinton James Brown REM
The only performance I can remember on Carson was Morrissey, when Carson and Cosby looked like tired old men trying to deal with Morrissey fans.
In terms of Dave's cranky vibe, my own personal preference is not a love-in interview with every person. Fallon makes my skin crawl. And the format of come on, plug your movie, and let's set up your scripted 'funny' story wasn't interesting to me in 1994, let alone 2024. Cher and Madonna going at it with Dave is always better. There's some bad moves, he would probably like to have back the Lindsay Lohan and Paris Hilton interviews.
I don't see how someone's age and nostalgia cannot cloud this kind of thing. I would take Stupid Human Tricks over a classic Mel Brooks appearance on Carson, and I am sure my mum would take the opposite view.
