Biden: Joe’s not a ‘real’ plumber

By ANDY BARR | 10/16/08 10:59 AM EDT

Democratic vice presidential nominee Joe Biden questioned whether Joe “the plumber” Wurzelbacher is a “real” plumber Thursday after the Ohio citizen vaulted to the front of campaign dialogue during the final presidential debate.

“John [McCain] continues to cling to the notion of this guy Joe the plumber,” Biden said on NBC’s “Today" show. “I don't have any Joe the plumbers in my neighborhood that make $250,000 a year.”

“The Joe the plumbers in my neighborhood, the Joe the cops in my neighborhood, the Joe the grocery store owners in my neighborhood, they make, like 98 percent of the small businesses, less than $250,000 a year.”

A video that shows Wurzelbacher telling Barack Obama earlier this week that the Democrat’s tax plan would prevent him from buying the business he currently works for became an instant YouTube sensation and popular fodder for conservatives.

Obama told the plumber that it was time to “spread the wealth around,” a phrase McCain and his campaign have been reciting frequently.

Biden said he isn’t worried that Wurzelbacher would not get a tax cut under Obama’s plan.

“We think we should give that to the real Joe the plumbers, who make $65,000, $70,000, $80,000 bucks a year,” Biden said on CBS’s “Early Show.”

During a news conference in front of his home, Wurzelbacher said he is “bothered” that he received more attention than the Iraq war in last night’s debate.

“I'm completely flabbergasted with this whole thing and just hope I'm not making too much of a fool of myself and hope I can get my message out there,” Wurzelbacher said.

Someone posted last night that this guy isn't even registered to vote. If true that says a lot about his "message" right there.

I thought the debate was supposed to be on domestic policy?

I don't care who Joe is and what Joe does. What I care about was Obama's automatic response of Socialist rhetoric. That's the issue.

I don't think this debate is being very clear on the specifics.

Isn't Joe saying that his business will gross $250k+ a year? I guess I'm assuming that it's not just Joe as a sole proprietor that's going to be the only guy working for his company. Is his company going to employ anyone?

I wonder if McCain got Joe the Plumber's permission to bring him up in the debate.

Otherwise he just opened this guy's life up to the world.....

For the mcain logic to work he better be netting 250k or he'll have some explaining to do.

Joe needs a better tax guy.

This guy Joe is going to be sorry he ever opened his mouth once the Obama sleaze machine gets through with him.

Coupled with the IRS audit that he's going to get every year for the next 4 years...

It's sad that the Democrats are so scared of their socialist agenda getting exposed that they have to discredit this guy.

That's what happens though when you act all smarmy.

There are plenty of transcripts available. Would you mind posting his "socialist rhetoric" from the debate last night so that we can have a look at it?

Exactly. Biden is trying to pull the wool over people's eyes with that 250k number. It's the BUSINESS income Joe!! I also love how they throw out the fact that they won't raise taxes on 95% of small businesses or whatever. I wonder how many of those registered small businesses make less than 5k a year. I bet it's the majority.Basically they want to raise taxes on the small businesses that are actually making it and employing people. I don't make anywhere near 250 personally but my business makes a hell of a lot more than that. We're going to get screwed if Obama pushes this through.

Fox News hasn't done that yet. He's talking about the "spreading the wealth around" response.

Apparently Joe "Biden" does not understand the notion of owning a company. Does an employed Plumber make $250K a year? Prob not. Can a hard working Plumber work his way up to owning a Plumbing company and make over $250K a year? Of course! It just show more of Biden making one of his dumb 7/11 comments again than anything else. Joe "Plumber" was saying that he was hoping to be able to get 'more trucks on the road' but was afraid the taxing plan of Obama will make it hard for him to do that.

Obama never once said we should spread the wealth around in the debate. I thought he was referring to the debate.

People have a right to know...who is this "Joe the plumber?" , who does he associate with? can we really trust him?

His response to Joe the Plumber, at the rally. Not what Obama said at the debate. The "The idea is to spread the weath around" quote.

:goodposting: I kind of doubt there are any plumbers in Biden's neighborhood.
Before you make yourself look like a jackass, I live a mile from Biden's neighborhood and I make no where near $250k a year. I'm certain that Plumbers/cops/teachers of all kinds live not to far away from his 'hood.

I think I read somewhere that he's like the 99th wealthiest senator (out of 100) and he's been there nearly his whole career.

Dear Mr. Fouts,

Please point to the spot in the article where Joe Biden actually questions whether Wurzelbacher is a real plumber.

I don't care who Joe is and what Joe does. What I care about was Obama's automatic response of Socialist rhetoric. That's the issue. :lmao:
 Although I differ with your perspective, I think that would at least be a point worth discussing. The idea of arguing public policy because of how it might - or might not - impact one person where many of the publicly known details of the person are fictionalized (McCain didn't even get the guy's last name right) is just silly.

:lmao: I kind of doubt there are any plumbers in Biden's neighborhood.

Of course, they're simply referred to as "the help."
 I've met him several times, he's a pretty nice, down-to-earth guy......

How will increasing the tax rate on taxable income (box 30 on the 1120) over $250,000 affect the business' ability to get more trucks on the road?

Guess Joe B was right about Joe P (according to Fox news)....

'Joe the Plumber' says he has no plumbing license

HOLLAND, Ohio — Joe the plumber says he doesn't have a plumbing license. Joe Wurzelbacher said he works for a small plumbing company that does residential work. He said that because he works for someone else, he doesn't need a license.

Wurzelbacher was cited by Republican candidate John McCain Wednesday night in the presidential debate as an example of someone who wants to buy a plumbing business but would be hurt by Barack Obama's tax plans. The Democrat said that his tax plan would only affect people making more than $250,000 a year.

Wurzelbacher, 34, said he was surprised that his name was mentioned so many times.

Not sure how this makes Biden right

Way too many people admitting their mistakes in here today.I'll be back when we return to some semblance of semblance.

That was the title of the blog...I think it's the idea that it is hard to believe a plumber is making over $250,000The whole premise of McCain bringing him up is the idea that he will pay more taxes ( make more than $250,000) which seems hard to swallow....

He lives in a $3M house on a lake. I'm sure he's surrounded by plumbers and cops. I "live not too far away" from multi-million dollar houses as well. I don't consider myself to be part of their neighborhood.

Delaware's small, I'm pretty sure everyone knows everyone on a first name basis. ;)

This is the only quote I saw and he's not saying Joe isn't a real plumber but actually referring to people who make an average income as the the "real Joe the Plumbers".
“We think we should give that to the real Joe the plumbers, who make $65,000, $70,000, $80,000 bucks a year,” Biden said on CBS’s “Early Show.”
