"Big Changes Coming" (1 Viewer)

Sorry everyone but this is all smoke and mirrors. Other than a coordinator not much will change. Who is he getting rid of Romo? no he won't go into full rebuild mode, Dez? no he just had his best season? Witten? no he just had another all pro type season Murray? no he was hurt and his contract is cheap Carr? no he didn't play badly and they signed him to a big deal so I am sure cutting him this early would kill the cap Claiborne? no he is a rookie and looked good Ware? no he played hurt a lot of the year and was still pretty good Austin? Maybe but is that a major change to let go of your 4th best option on offense? Jerry Jones is starting to turn into the late Al Davis, at one point he was good but as father time catches up with people and they think they were as good as they were in their prime and he just isn't.
I'm hoping Gordon is right. It would be interesting to see Cowher or Gruden there. Also, Murray owners vehemently disagree, but I wouldn't be surprised if they bring in someone to compete with Murray for 1st/2nd downs. Aside from a couple long runs, he's been pretty ineffective when healthy. Speaking of which, even if he was a good 1st/2nd down guy, he just can't stay on the field. They need insurance. And if Jerry spends money on a guy, he's going to want to see his new toy in use at least somewhat.
Bringing in a backup RB isn't a major change. Murray is the starter. All the skill positions on offense are locked in, though Romo might be on thinner ice just because he's the QB and that's a position where knee jerk and desperation can force moves. The OL is crap. The thing is that serious fans are savvy enough to understand that. But I don't think Jones understands what his fans know. So he'll probably screw things up with some grand gesture(s) intended to appease them.
Thanks, I was going to post this but you saved me the time. I hate the Cowboys so I hope Jerry stays, but for the better mental health of his fan he should at least hire a GM to help him out.

Romo isnt going anywhere. I expect the Cowboys to target a change of pace speed back in the draft along with OL and DL. Should be able to sign a decent safety in FA.I think any semi intelligent Cowboys fan knew the line was a weak point going into this year and it definitely broke. I dont believe they can release Free after what looks like a terrible contract given to him because of the cap hit. Not sure what to expect about Ratliff, Spencer or Austin

Reading through this thread I agree with some disagree with others.

JJ as a GM has been a failure for a long time now. Thats very apparent to everyone except JJ. Actually, he's not an idiot. I think he just keeps hoping he can dig himself and his team out of the hole he's put em in. A decent GM would be every Cowboys' fans dream come true.

Romo and Murray are not the problem. In fact, imo, Romo has gotten better with age and could take this team to the next level if he had better surrounding talent, and better coaching. Disagree? You didnt watch much Cowboys football this year. The O line and poor WR play were much more of a problem than Romo. I shudder to think what would have happened to Orton behind this line. He'd have been taken off in a stretcher.

Murray is a borderline stud. The injuries are a concern. He runs pretty violently. Love his vision and how he finishes runs. IF he can stay healthy, he's AP light. Again, crappy O-line did him no justice this season.

Ware being traded for the right price might be a step in filling the holes that need to filled. Although, JJ is still the GM........so he'll prolly let him go for a punter, a 7th rounder, and some gatorade.

Bring in Jake Long? Move Tyron Smith back to right tackle. Cut Free.
No way this happens. #1 Cutting Free will be expensive#2 Signing Long will be even more expensive. Dude just finished his rookie contract and will command BIG BUCKS.

A good article from the beginning of the year on Jerry by Brian Billick that is some food for thought

My 3 a.m. rule is about priorities. When a football person wakes up in the middle of the night — as quite a lot of them do — what’s the first thing that occupies the mind? The answer to that question tells you a lot about who you are and what your priorities are. When Jerry Jones wakes up at 3 a.m., what is he thinking about? Who will fill out the 53-man roster? Who should go on the inactive list this week? How to keep the quarterback from throwing so many interceptions? Or is it the timing for the next pizza commercial? The financing of the monolithic stadium? The reception to the Victoria’s Secret store he just opened up inside the same monolithic stadium? If he’s thinking about any of those last three, you have to wonder about the corollary — who’s waking up thinking about the football issues? And, among the people who are, do any of them truly have the authority to do something about it?

Starting to worry about my job. I had as much to do with the Cowboys record as Peete and Ryan did.
I don't think Ryan was the sole responsibility for the Cowboys disappointing showing, but he's arguably the most overrated defensive mind in the game. While firing him might not change much, based on his resume it shouldn't be hard to find someone that can do as much, if not more, in the position.

It was explained to me a while back that Stephen Jones is the GM and Jerry buts in every now and then. Ever since, I've felt like I could tell what Stephen did and what Jerry did. Sure, I don't know how accurate my feelings are, but I've come across so many Cowboys fans that seem to think similarly. Following this line of thinking, Stephen seems fine if not a very good GM. It just seems like a monkey wrench keeps getting thrown in.I don't like Romo because he consistently reminds me of Bledsoe whom groomed him once upon a time. He becomes a dunderhead in the playoffs or playoff-deciding games.I never notice the Cowboys taking the approach of running a ton to minimize his usage in these games. They did with Troy and Emmitt at times, BP did with Quincy and...why'd they stop that?I do always think Witten will catch it and he had a game this past year where that crazy notion finally seemed to come true. Still, they've had a nice stable of runningbacks and I've always felt like they should run them into the ground in these important games.Romo's contract is up in 2013 so he's movable and not super expensive. With some recent QB movement and extensions, he's relatively cheap. We've all seen many coordinators turned head coach and SEEM curiously uninvolved in the other side of the ball. I don't in any way see Garrett's stamp on defense. Until I do, I feel like he shouldn't be a head coach. The Cowboys need to draft passrushers because I'm sick and tired of seeing an injured Demarcus Ware meaning that they can't get after the Quarterback. It's been what 10 years? If that guy is on the sideline they have no pass rush. It's pathetic. Yeah it's a team game, but cmon some of these pass rushers have to have some individual ability when he's out. I don't think their defense is real good or real bad. I really think that a pass rusher and a linebacker could make this a defense that can win games for them. Don't forget the simple point that their offense just has to outscore the points the D allows. I haven't done stat research yet, but watching them they are one of the worst 3rd down defenses and pretty good on 1st and 2nd. Watching it's like heh pretty good stop, nice tackle, ouch wow that was bad....over and over. I really think they can improve dramatically by adding a pass rusher via trade.I have always been a fan of Mike Zimmer. I was floored when he switched from Jimmy Johnson's speedy D to Bill Parcells' D and then had a top D in Cincy. They were about the most unlucky team ever with injuries to their defense for several years and he fell off the radar til recently. I wish they'd bring him back. Few coaches are as adaptive as he is. His systems and stereotypical player types have always been changing and he still does well with what he's got. I don't think Jerry makes bold moves. Instead I think we have another year of Romo and Garrett. I think he's all talk. I imagine a year full of some Jerry bashing and then big changes next year.

Some good points. I will argue that Romo's main problem is he's put in bad situations by bad coaching and surrounding players not doing their jobs. He cant make Doug Free good. Our guards are turnstyles. This is not a good O-line. He cant make Ogletree catch the ball or know where hes spose to be on the field. I think Romo made a lot great adjustments at the line, and plays this season. I felt like he was constantly trying to coach guys on the field during the game. Having Murray in the backfield helped take some pressure off him. But this team faltered again due to key injuries, being outcoached, poor O-line play, lack of a pass rush, and not being able to stop the run up the middle.
