Fred Jackson put on IR; out for year

November 23, 2011 - 12:33 PM | 5 comments

The Buffalo Bills' season took a major turn for the worse today with the news that star running back Fred Jackson is out for the year with a fracture to his fibula bone in his lower right leg.

Jackson was placed on the injured-reserve list by the Bills today. The injury is the latest blow to a Bills team (5-5) that has lost three straight games. The Bills also have lost starters Eric Wood, Donald Jones and Terrence McGee to injury the past two weeks.

Jackson's injury came late in the third quarter in Miami Sunday when the running back was hit hard from behind on his calf.

Jackson is second in the NFL in yards from scrimmage through 10 games. He has 934 yards rushing and 442 yards receiving for a combined total of 1,376 yards. Chicago's Matt Forte leads the league with 1,391 scrimmage yards.

Jackson has accounted for 40 percent of the Bills' offense this season. The Jets' defense ranks seventh in the NFL in yards allowed and shut down the Bills' attack three weeks ago in a 27-11 New York victory.

The injury puts second-year man C.J. Spiller into the spotlight. He must step into Jackson's big shoes.

“It’s a huge blow for us," said Bills guard Andy Levitre. “Fred’s a great player. He was all-purpose for us. We could use him doing anything with our offense. We’re definitely gong to take a blow with that. We have some good guys behind him. C.J.’s ready to step up."

Whew. Traded him this morning before the news broke.

Tough news for Jackson owners...and you really have to feel for the guy, after having such an amazing season.

How does this not go out in an e-mail alert? A starting RB went down for the season, and a lot of us probably missed it because no e-mail went out so we could try for preemptive pickups.

Spiller may not be great, but some of us are relying on Jackie Battle around here :(

Just traded Forte and Rivers for this guy and Andre a few weeks ago (Note Vick and Cutler were my other QB's)

nevermind, just got the mail. It just happens that people in my leagues picked up spiller 5 hours ago. What luck for them :(

Seems like it could also be bad news for Fred's longer-term prospects if Spiller and/or White perform well. Fred obviously looked spry this year, but will still be on the wrong side of 30 next season. Spiller has a golden opportunity to cement himself as the heir apparent.

hope it gets vetoed
Keeper league, but I wouldn't have a spot for him next year, and I posted a note on my trade offer that it was possible he could be placed on IR. I also gave him Spiller and Daniel Thomas, for Lynch...so I was on the up and up.

Im sure most of you dont have your leagues on ESPN, but Spiller is listed as a RB/WR on there. A little added bonus if you get him on your squad.

I guess the upside is he won't be considered for the 2012 Madden cover

well, it definitely hurts his leverage when it comes to his contract negotiations.tough to imagine Spiller being half as good as what Jackson has shown this year though. I think his role as the starter is secure.

should have put a waiver claim in for spiller

traded MJD last week because i had an embarrassment of riches with he, Fred, Demarco Murray and McCoy...now I don't have a flex RB. :wall:

First Charles, now Jackson, thank God I'm in the playoffs already but I see trouble ahead.
Me too. I lost Charles, Best, Moreno, and now Fred Jax.
I lost Best, Hillis, Andre Johnson, Miles Austin ,AJ Green,Kenny Britt, Jacoby Ford, Michael Vick and then the final nail in my fantasy coffin: Fred Jackson: :censored: :toilet: :violin: :tumbleweed: :sadbanana:  :kicksrock: :missing: and finally :ptts: and :tfp:
You forgot Peyton Manning, Jamaal Charles, Hightower, and Kaeding...

So, who's the pick up here if Spiller returns to his form (which was the reason Jackson was there in the first place), White or Choice?

Please post any healthy players remaining on your roster so I can preemptively trade them ASAP.TIA

I don't think anyone, including the coaches, know right now.Choice was good in the past but is already on his 3rd team this season. White is inexperienced and unproven.

Decimated OLine, WRs injured, fading QB, a complete flop thus far running b/t the tackles, and pretty bad in limited use as a WR.

No I didnt They were never on my team.

Thanks Guys! Actually some good stuff in all this crying here. I got excited about picking up Spiller or Choice but don't have a drop I want to make and pretty set on RB's.

Looks like there's not that much to see there anyway. someone else can jump them--both are still on my league's waivers.

 care to expand on this more? I haven't watched any Bills games this year, but the guy only has 21 carries for the season. And an average of 5.5 ypc. 21 carries seems like way too small of a sample size to make any form of a "flop" statement.

I'm tired of reading about how Jackson going to IR affects the Bills passing game, Spiller/White, and the team as a whole. Can you guys just explain what this did to your fantasy teams? Thanks.
