Bills release Jeff Posey (1 Viewer)

On The Rocks

Footballguy
I kept reading that the Weakside LB in the Cover 2 defense was the big tackle man in this defense....

Bills Release Jeff Posey

what i didn't realize was this:

It was evident even in the spring camps that Posey who is a strong, hold-the-point-of-attack kind of linebacker was not an ideal fit. The coaching staff moved him to weak side late in the spring camps, and he was running with the second team at training camp. Takeo Spikes took his strong side linebacker position and Angelo Crowell moved into the starting lineup on the weak side.
can anyone provide some info on this??????

Two threads last week with some discussion on this. Here they are.Angelo Crowell WLB // Takeo Spikes SLB

What I would like to know is when will the projections and rankings reflect this change between Spikes and Crowell? This has to increase Crowell a ton and decrease Spikes.

Not only does the move decrease Spike's value, so does the apparent 3 weeks of regular season he is scheduled to miss. I thought he was a steal in my dynasty draft but have since dropped him for DeMeco Ryans, who is now the MLB for the Texans. If you have Spikes and Ryans is available I would do the same.

this must not be a very deep dynasty league. can't imagine a player as good as Spikes or Ryans being available on the Waiver Wire.

you got it. Very short WW. Most teams don't carry more than 1-2 bacup IDPs. I've only got two myself. Also have only one backup WR. very thin benches for a dynasty team.

The 'Skins and Posey's old coach, Gregg Williams are looking at signing Posey.

With [LB Chris] Clemons out a while, the Redskins were on the verge of signing outside linebacker Jeff Posey, who played for assistant coaches Gregg Williams, Jerry Gray and Danny Smith in Buffalo. Posey, cut by new Bills coach #### Jauron earlier this month, started 76 games the past eight years for five teams.
It sounds like he'd be a WLB fill-in, but that spot has already got some competition between Holdman and McIntosh, so maybe he slides over to the SLB to be a backup to Washington.

Interesting take on Spike's move to SLB. Can anyone comment on this? I thought the Tampa 2 shed everything towards the WLB....is this guy crazy?

"The team is keeping Angelo Crowell on the weak side, where he started for Spikes the last 13 games last season, and moving Spikes to the strong side. It's not considered a significant move because both outside linebackers share similar responsibilities in the team's new defensive system. Both have the speed, range and instincts to play in space--all prerequisites for the defense. Spikes will play over the tight end at times; he also will line up off the line of scrimmage. Spikes is close to regaining his speed and lateral movement. Once he sharpens his instincts and recognition skills, the team believes he'll return to the playmaking Pro Bowler he was before the injury"

I think it relates more to the difference in value of the SLB to a NFL team and IDP owner. Plenty of SLB are "playmakers" for their NFL teams but don't show up in the boxscores. Marcus Washington, Derrick Johnson among others. It appears that Spikes and Crowell will be kind of a right/left tandem, with Spikes being the odd man out in the nickel for now. You're correct that most variations of the Tampa-2 scheme to spill plays toward the weak side. I think the insider is just saying that the Bills are hopeful that Spikes can show some of his pursuit, pass rush, and coverage skills when he's healthy. He can still do many of those things from the strong side.
