Black Bear Issue: How Big a Problem? (1 Viewer)

Who is leaving slabd of meat and chicken carcasses strewn about their backyard the night after a BBQ?
While not to that degree, I'm sure the night of this party has been quite a catch for any animals in the past. I deal with a lot of the food stuff, but it's the 4th and I start drinking well before noon. After eating, then a fireworks show, I'm wrecked and exhausted. Everyone staying the night is in some form of this state, and the generally constitute the clean-up crew.

In the past, clean-up has been spotty, and some years involve more "#### it, we'll get it in the morning"'s than others.

Even with good clean-up, the trash cans will still be quite a buffet for the bear.

Hell, maybe this bear just knows the 4th is coming.
You should put all thr waste in a very tightly bound garbage bag and bring them in to the garage til its time for pick up
No doubt this is a very big part of the overall problem. There's no pick up. You haul your own trash to the dump. He probably takes it about every 3 weeks.

He could do a better job of sealing it up in between trips, but again, the critters/violent beasts don't bother him that much.
Dump the edible scraps deep in the woods so they wont come by the house

What state?

Here in FL, you are looking at a hefty fine and possible jail time if you kill a bear that just wanders into your yard.
So, stand your ground only applies to humans?
http://www.naplesnews.com/news/2009/may/08/attorney-man-arrested-shooting-black-bear-protecti/

From that link:

"Florida law is specific: A person cannot kill an endangered or threatened species.

Several reporters and Behen questioned why the “Stand Your Ground” law doesn’t apply when it comes to wildlife – only humans.

Morse said: “We have a legal system. Florida law states you cannot shoot a threatened species.”

There have been cases where a person was not prosecuted if they truly felt they were in fear of their lives and shot a bear. However, there have been no documented bear attacks on human in Florida."
How did the good, God-feaing Conservatives in that state let it come to this?

I was hoping we might get some live FFA updates of BBQ man vs black bear. I'm kinda pulling for the bear at this point. And what happened to the second bag of dog food?

Hey if you do kill the bear, their fat makes for excellent frying. The meat is good ground in like a pasta instead of beef. Don't be wasteful!

My grandparents live in Westerly, Rhode Island. A bear wandered all the way down from New Hampshire a couple of year ago, with well publicized reports of its travels. You just don't see bears in that part of the world. It was seen in their neighborhood, then wandered down towards the beach a mile or two away.

No word of it from there, which would simply be impossible given the population density and distance to get back to a place where bears are common.

Someone in Westerly probably has a bear skin rug.

Luckily, everyone made it out of the party alive, even with that beast roaming the hills. Dogs too.

The only shooting was at clay pigeons.

I showed up at the FIL's about 5am to start the smoker. I had asked him to install stadium lighting for the 45 minutes or so I'd spend in the dark with that bear watching and waiting to attack. No dice.

I did blast the radio as I drove up the driveway and around the house to the smoker. Thanks for that tip, hikers, I know it saved my life.

It woke up the FIL, but that's cheaper than stadium lighting.

Dog food has been inside since the bag got jacked.

You really need to write a letter to Outdoor Life. They can put it in their "I Survived" section.

That story will be handy down from generation to generation.

Bear kills guy in Jersey.

PSA: if you're in a group of people don't split up and run.
"Evidence at the scene indicated that the victim had been attacked by a bear," said the statement, adding that the bear was "euthanized" at the scene.
This was all over the news here a few days back. I guess my biggest issue is why they'd go and kill the bear. That's just a bear doing what bears do.
From my extensive research on bears (Alaska: The Last Frontier marathons), bears don't instinctively have the thirst for blood. Apparently though, once they taste the sweet nectar, they go after it again.

Or more likely, attacking a human could be sign of a rabid bear.

maybe the bear was hungry for Indian food

This has gotta be where the phrase "Does a bear #### in the woods?" came from.

Just read that something like 90% of black bear attacks are predatory. Doesn't happen often, but when it does it makes sense to take the bear out I guess. They let that Grizzly in Yellowstone live a few years ago until it killed a 2nd person. Oops.

I think something along the lines of a bear (or animal) that attacks a human has a lot better chance of doing it again?

Thought I heard something like that in the past

I bet if it was a white bear, he would have been set free.

Well, to be fair he wouldn't have killed the kid. Probably scammed him a ponzi scam but not killing him
