ETA: Per Rotoworld, their link is bad ...

Titans released WR Mike Williams.

There were some positive reports about Williams in minicamps, but he was still overweight and didn't make any noise in July. He's got to be nearly out of chances, barring a miraculous change in attitude. Our recommendation for Williams' future? See if he can get those two years of eligibility at USC back.

What a freaking waste.

I still remember Mel Kiper saying "I don't understand why no one has picked him yet. This guy is going to be a star."

Can someone find a youtube clip of this? I can't search you tube at work.

Kiper's opinion was the majority opinion. He dominated at SC.

There were a lot of people who thought he would be a bust, though, because he didn't have the speed to make it at the next level. I remember people saying they'd have to convert him to TE if they wanted him to be effective. Most thought he would be good, but there were plenty of doubters too.

:thumbup:There were the standard predictions that people threw out there for a large receiver. He was either going to be "big" and "physical", and dominate the "smaller CB's" grabbing "red zone TD's", or he was going to be "too slow to get separation". Congrats if you were on the correct side of the argument, this time. The thing that surprised everyone and that for whatever reason wasn't well covered by scouts before the draft was Williams horrendous work ethic. If any single thing ruined him in the NFL, it was that. It was also a huge mistake for him to have lost a year in college by trying to enter the draft a year early after his sophomore year. He needed that additional time.

I wonder if it would have made any difference had he not been caught up in the Maurice Clarett thing.I think he got the short end of the stick with that situation.

Oh well...I'm surprised to see the guy had 2 years to get it together with Tennessee and STILL couldn't get it.

As for the comments that people thought he'd be moved to tight end, ideas like that drive me batty. It is downright silly to think that just because a WR is big and not so fast that automatically makes him Tight End material. That's like suggesting a big, but not quick DE could easily shift to DT or that a big, slow tailback would make a good fullback. There is a reason that such shifts are rare in succeeding. The positions are eons different with "catch the ball" being the only similarity. For starters, the TE's blocking assignments are night and day different from the WRs assignments. A TE has to block try and block Jason Taylor or Demarcus Ware in a certain direction to open the hole for the RB; the WR simply has to occupy the corner in the event the RB breaks in to space. As for receiving, just because a WR is bigger (like WIlliams) doesn't mean that he's going to have ease catching the ball because the guys covering him are now a lot bigger too. It's somewhat relative.

Mike Williams as a bad receiver didn't mean that he could emerge as a servicable TE.
