I don't want to corrupt the data by telling everyone what I'm using this for, but I'd like you guys to submit your arguements of the teams with the worst pass rush. You don't have to go by just team sacks, but if your gonna submit your choices, you better back em up with some stats. I'd be interested what you think we should measure and take into account.

Here's a start. Sacks per 100 pass attempts:

Code:
3.91	Washington4.91	Tennessee5.01	Minnesota5.07	Tampa Bay5.56	Houston5.61	Cleveland5.64	New York (N)5.87	Detroit6.02	Indianapolis6.31	Cincinnati6.32	Kansas City6.51	Denver6.56	San Francisco6.58	New York (A)6.65	Dallas6.69	Jacksonville6.88	Chicago7.18	Atlanta7.28	Arizona7.37	Pittsburgh7.54	St. Louis7.62	Philadelphia7.80	Buffalo8.02	New Orleans8.13	Seattle8.20	Carolina8.29	Oakland8.49	New England8.93	Green Bay9.46	Miami11.34	San Diego11.79	Baltimore
Ideally, you'd like to adjust for SOS and downs and distances.

Or proportion of rushes against versus pass attempts against.
My list is sacks per 100 pass attempts.
My bad. Missed that. I thought it was per 100 plays. :lmao:
Oakland ranks 6th in sacks per pass attempt, but is tied for ranking 19th-22nd in sacks with 34, since they saw the fewest pass attempts in the league. Conversely, Chicago ranks 16th in sacks per pass attempt, but is tied for 7th-9th in total sacks.

There are lots of posts I make that take me a lot of time. This one took very little time. The information is all available at NFL.com. (And yes, I'm a law student.)

After 8 years in law school, he knows how to budget his time.

Chase blows it up with the first post! :lmao:

Does anybody else have anything else to add? I'm trying to maintain objectivity, so I'm I'd rather have you guys come up with the mesurement before I start my analysis.

The Colts really jumped out in that list, especially having ends like Freeney and Mathis.
I'm hoping Freeney's stats return to normal in 2007 because A.) I'm a Colts fan and B.) I plan to draft the Colts' D in the next-to-last or last rounds of my fantasy leagues.

Well, I would think hurries and knock downs are also part of the equation. Not sure where you get those. A good pass rush doesn't have to get there, it just has to mess up the play.

Washington is horrendous. QBs can park themselves back there for hours.

MIN, DET, and CLE also come to mind.

No one on those 4 teams even comes across as a sack threat. And even when they blitz they fail to put pressure on the QB.

Not sure about the other 2 teams, but Wimbley had 10.5 in his rookie year with Cleveland.

What you're saying is technically true, but you'd have to agree that there tends to be a strong correllation between sacks and pressure, kind of the way that there's a strong correllation between yards gained and scoring, right?

After digging a little deeper on this with the Bucs, I'm sure what this stat means.

Bucs in '06 - 5.07 (28th in NFL) - record was 4-12

Bucs in '05 - 7.56 (would be 12th in 2006) - record was 11-5

Bucs in '04 - 10.32 (would be 3rd in 2006) - record was 5-11

Even though the Tampa 2 depends heavily on a pass rush, it doesn't seem to directly reflect the degree of success for the season.

Is it not pretty obvious that an effective pass rush tends to mean an effective defense?

True...thanks...I hadn't gotten to overall rankings yet, but thought I remembered that '04 defense to be sub-par. It was obviously the offense that was putrid. The more I think about this, and go back to a previous debate about the most important position in the Tampa 2...the more I want us to trade down and go after Okoye or Adams.
