I've only had it once, but was really blown away at Rare Breed.  Thought it seemed very high end.

 
  1. Daily drinker- your go to for enjoying your daily bourbon. Old Weller Antique 107 or Knob Greek 120 picks. Thankfully stocked up on OWA picks when it was $29.99, and people still haven't gotten too crazy about KC120 picks. 
  2. Impress your guests - fancy but not too fancy: Depends on guests... if normal friends Blantons or Weller 12. If they're closer friends and/of serious bourbon drinkers: William Larue Weller 
  3. Cheap mixer (and for guests you know won’t appreciate it): Evan Williams BIB on hand at all times. 
  4. Something great- your Friday night bourbon: William Larue Weller or something a little dusty 
  5. Special occasion bottle - saving this for a special occasion : 1960's Stitzsl Weller Old Fitzgerald BIB.

This is as good a reason as I can think of to have 3 more glasses.

One of the kids I coach, his parents own a liquor store (and the mom's brother also runs one). They don't usually get the very hard to get stuff (ie Pappy), but do often get some decent stuff, much of which won't get put out but is instead sold to regulars or online if they post it up. She basically asked me to give her a list of what I'd like them to try get and she'd see what she could do. Hoping to at least be able to see if they can get some decent stuff at their cost or at least minimal mark up. She had mentioned that they had Blanton's but it sold fast (and was way more expensive than I expected, so it may be different than the Blanton's I saw listed at my local Ralph's, which was out of stock unfortunately, but was only about $80, she said they had sold their's at more than double that to one of their regulars who really wanted it)

Any ideas on certain bottles I should see if they can get: I know from the samples @[icon] sent in August/September, other than the Van Winkle 12 Yr Lot B which I really really liked, my favorite was the Willett Family Estate 12 Yr, so something similar to that. I also, like many others, enjoy Buffalo Trace and Basil Hayden on the "lower" end, and I have really been enjoying the Old Forrester Bottled in Bond that my local Costco has had lately. 

So, that in mind, any thoughts on what I should see if they may have/be able to get, along with what a reasonable price would be? I was going to see if they could get Eagle Rare 17 year as I've wanted to try that, but open to suggestions.

If they're selling Blantons for 2x retail to a regular I'm GUESSING they're going to unlikely to let any of the GOOD stuff go at retail, but you guys might be closer than I'm thinking. 

Eagle Rare 17yr is part of the Buffalo Trace Antique Collection, one of the rarer bottles these days actually. A couple years ago secondary was $1500-2000. Not sure on this year's bottle. If you liked Willett Family Estate 12yr then you will probably like the George T Stagg out of the BTAC. It's the "most common" and sits around $400 secondary.. so he might be more inclined to let it go near its $100 retail. 
 

EH Taylor Barrel Proof makes its way out once a year and is REALLY good. It is a bit more under the radar and can be "easier" to get for retail ($80ish). 

Blantons is releasing Gold (100 proof) here in the states now. Worth giving it a shot as well. Higher proof Blantons (gold and SFTB) are delicious IMO... whereas the standard proof can be a bit one dimensional. 

IF anyone sees a Bottle of OLD KIRK at their store... grab one. Likely only in Tennessee (I know of barrels hitting Nashville and Memphis for sure). It's super  secret but someone worked a deal with Drew at Willett for ~20 barrels of their 6-7yr high corn mashbill bourbon.

They are not allowed to talk about the source but it's the same stuff going in Willett purple tops and sold at $199 retail with $500+ secondary. 

Ive been lucky enough to be asked to help pick a barrel this coming week for a local shop. I'm working on a label for them and got the green light to buy a 6 bottle case at retail ($69). If it's as good as I think it'll be, these will be in my rotation as a nightly supper... well, I will prob flip one to pay for the other 5 :lol:  

 
My bourbon page in Memphis has been growing and is now over 1300folks with an active secondary page of over 600. We've just wrapped up our first barrel selection with local distillery/bottler. We're doing an uncut/unfiltered bottle of 9yr (nearly 10yr) bottle of blue note bourbon with them. It's George Dickel Distillate that's been aging downtown Memphis in a warehouse. 

They were great hosts, going overboard for us during the pick. We got a surprisingly tasty barrel. 

While the bottle will retain their standard cosmetics, plus the typical foil "store pick" label, we wanted to jazz it up a bit. 

As a nod to Memphis, we went with "Whoop That Pick" as the name, a play off the Al Kapone signature track for the Movie "Hustle & Flow". Went with a silver wax top and I designed a pardoy of the soundtrack album cover on a holographic label for the back of the bottle.

We did a presale at $60 incl tax (zero profit for the store handling it) and it sold out in 2 days with a long waiting list. We are planning another pick in January with a different liquor store.

My buddy gave me that for Christmas last year - said I think we’ve been underestimating Wild Turkey. I agreed with him / good stuff!

2.  For daily drinkers, I completely forgot since I'm out...Woodford Wheat is insanely good.  I'm a big wheat guy though.  It's a wheated Whiskey, not enough corn to be bourbon.  But delicious.  A place in town has it for 34$, a lot of places have it at 40.

Any chance you’d want to unload a bottle or 2?  I’m willing to pay a markup!

I got a bottle of KC120 recently, good stuff but I’m not making Kutta bucks to drink it daily.   :)  

ETA - I’d offer to trade something but I have a feeling that would be an empty gesture - you probably have a better selection of bourbons you’ve forgotten about in the back of your Jeep than I have in my bar.

Big Rare Breed fan. I've been on a Russel's Reserve kick lately so I've been getting my Wild Turkey fix that way, but love me some Rare Breed.

 
Any suggestions for an old bottle of Johnny Walker with a cork that broke off....it’s a sentimental bottle of gold that was bought about 15 years ago. I’ve read pour into a strainer, rinse bottle then pour back in back where can I get the right size replacement cork?

 
Whew! Thought I had struck out on my favorite bottle every year but just got the call today for a 2020 William Larue Weller.

Joining the rest of the family: 2015-2020

Apparently these have zoomed past $1200 and are pushing $1300 now. Makes it hard to open, and I LOVE this stuff.... :unsure:

Which Costco? Novato only has the old Forrester combo but play foxtail just about every weekend.

I'm in Southern California now (grew up in Rohnert Park not far from you), this was at the Costco in Yorba Linda.

I've noticed over the last 4-6 months that they have been rotating in a decent selection outside of their year round stuff - lots of Whistlepig 10 year, the aforementioned Old Forrester and they head some of the Bear Republic stuff which I believe is out of Healdsburg.

I need to get some essentials tomorrow (milk, eggs, etc.) which always provides a good reason to check out what they have - though I loathe Costco on Sundays, the rest of my week is too busy that it is probably the only day I can get there.

My absolute favorite bourbon. Haven't even been able to get close to it in 3-4 years now. Looking at the BTAC numbers, I understand why. Congrats on the score!

I'm very lucky to have a close friend who runs a major liquor store and takes care of me. Otherwise I'd not have the luxury either 

 
I’m down in Orange County and yelp’ed bourbon to try and see if I could find some better bottles down here, anywho found a liquor store that had BTAC GTS and a 15 year pappy. They wanted 699 for the GTS and 1900 for the pappy, walked out with nothing.

Got it. I think quite a few of these OC places really put major markups beyond normal secondary prices as they know there is enough wealth around here to support those prices - and people willing to pay them to show off their "showpiece" bottles.

 
I’m not sure what the distribution is like outside the Southeast but let me give a plug to Chattanooga Whiskey 111 Cask.  I’ve visited the distillery twice but haven’t done the tour.  You can pick this up around here for $40 and it’s kind of a unique bourbon.  Dark fruits (I get fig and raisins) are predominant for me - fairly sweet.  It’s not an old bourbon so some may avoid it but it drinks much older.  Their Solera finished 1816 is also pretty delicious.  These guys really know what they are doing.

 
Ok, open to suggestions.  We are doing a Christmas blind flight with some friends this weekend.  Trying to decide what to blind - options are Low proof, BiB, High Proof, Barrel Proof, Ryes or Wheaters.  We’ve not done this before so wondering if it makes more sense to do one of those, different offerings from the same distillery or even something else.  Just curious if you have any thoughts or suggestions.

I found a good place today that may get stagg jr tomorrow, cypress craft beer and liquor 

 
Russell's Reserve for about $32 where I am is a very smooth cheap straight option.  Tired of chasing Buffalo Trace bottles when there is so much good stuff always available.

If you want a very good Wheat option try Wilderness Trail (about $50) a bottle where I am.  I'd put is a notch above Eagle Rare or in the same level as Blantons (but available).

I’ve almost bought the single barrel BiB a few times (yellow label). I’ve had it in my hands and changed my mind.  I’ve read good things about that one.

Like Russell's Reserve 10  a lot, just purchased Russell's Reserve Single Barrell, like it, thinking will like it a lot and a bit more...I am in a buy and sample mode, so WT 101, and EW white BiB in this grouping. Need a few sessions to fully assesss...

I really enjoy Chattanooga 1816. Upon first being gifted this I imbibed several times and thoroughly enjoyed, took a break and on reminder from this and as a start to Holiday time off version 1 quaffed a few drams after a EW BiB highball with some Q Spectacular Ginger Ale...Sweet and caramelly, possibly due to residual ginger ale a little extra sweetness. Very drinkable and smooth, drank neat...and wanted another...possibly a third before nodding out...hmmm...you guys talked me into it...haha, Peace, Be Well...All the best to you and yours !!!

Jack Daniels Limited Single Barrel - Barrel Proof Rye (MSRP $65)

This #### is GOOD. Huge flavors of molasses and baking spice. Some dark fruit like raisin and plum. It's bold as hell without being overly ethanol forward. Big mouthfeel.. oily and viscous. Finish lingers beautifully. One of the best ryes I've ever had. No BS. 

Absolutely delicious. 

It's not easy to find, but also not so rare that store owners will be annoyed with you calling and asking about it. 

If you like big full flavored whiskeys and/or  like rye.... jump on this. They're selling out fast everywhere.

Picked up 2 bottles: a 1792 full proof and a smoke wagon small batch, looking forward to drinking the smoke wagon tonight.

The place very local to me has been pushing Smoke Wagon a lot lately.

I just popped open a bottle of Jefferson Reserve (Very Small Batch or something like that), gotta say, not a huge fan of it. I'll probably still finish the bottle eventually or see if I prefer it in more of a cocktail form.

 
Question for the experts: What's the best bourbon I can buy for about $100? I usually stick to Buffalo Trace or sometimes Basil Hayden's but want to bump it up for New Years. Any advice appreciated.

Availability in that price range is probably your biggest issue. It might be easier for you to list the options at your local store and we can go from there or we will probably suggest a lot that may not be attainable where you live.

 
Did well for Christmas!

Got a bottle of Wild Turkey Rare Breed, which I think is fantastic.  

My in-law's got me Maker 46--which is my go to.  

 
Went browsing at Costco with some of my FF winnings (look at me!). Grabbed a bottle of New Riff Single Barrel that seems damn smooth at 105 proof. Spicy and some cherry notes, I think.  

Unfortunately they took all the nice high-end bottles (Bookers, Bakers, etc) off the floor at Christmas, so I was a few days late for the well-known brands. They still had Basil Hayden and Angel's Envy but I've had both before.  

Also picked up a HANDLE of EW BiB for $26.99  :excited:

 
Just started getting into Bourbon. My dad has been collecting for awhile. He had me over to do a tasting the other day to help me find which ones I liked the best. His favorite distillery is Buffalo Trace, so we started with those and then tried a big variety.

I definitely enjoy this one - Costco has had it previously at a decent price - think I'm on my third bottle this year, may join you in cracking one open for today.

 
Picked up an EH Taylor straight rye, JD single barrel rye and a JD single barrel barrel proof. 2021 is the year of the Manhattan.
