Bourbon guys (4 Viewers)

I grabbed my cask MM from Binny's a pretty large Chicago distributor. Guessing you should be able to grab one being in Detroit?  I mean I have my own water lol...but possibly the private select is from some more primo juice.

Maybe I’ve never really looked for either too hard

I didn't look, just saw...and was like...good chance to decide if I like MM...cuz I have my own water ...let's taste the juice...

as an aside...I grabbed a bottle of Eagle Rare and didn't notice a box with a horse in it right next to it...cuz...didn't know to look haha...luckily the liqour store salesperson thinks I am handsome....guessing she samples stock lol

Just had the luxury of being able to purchase several of the Jack Daniels Tennessee Tasters Barrel Proof Rye pints.

This is a Tennessee only release that is the same rye that was in the highly sought JD BP Rye Limited Release from last year. This dark, spicy rye honestly my favorite bottle released last year.  Secondary is around $300 at this point.

  2. If you can link to a post you made in this thread about wanting to try this stuff, link to it and I'll give you three entries for the taster pint.

Some friends and I did a blind flight last night on Zoom.  Lineup (that only I knew about) was barrel proof bourbons.  Elijah Craig Barrel Proof A121, Wild Turkey Rare Breed, Stagg Jr. 15 and Jack Daniels Single Barrel, Barrel Proof.

Rankings:

1. Jack Daniels SB BP - this #### is delicious, smells and tastes like bananas foster.  I kind of hate regular JD but this is outstanding.  Makes me even more angry I can’t find the rye.

2. Stagg Jr. 15 - hottest of the bunch 131.1 but delicious

3. Elijah Craig BP A121 - these are favorites of mine and while still good the other two are just superb

4. WT Rare Breed - something has to finish last in this group and it’s Rare Breed, which I love - it’s really good but just didn’t stack up against these other three.
@[icon] - here’s my entry and one of my posts about the JDSB BP Rye.  I’ll give somebody a kidney for a bottle.  Awesome of you as always!

Thanks for extending.  I had ankle surgery Friday morning so been sleeping mostly.

And to keep the Christmas season going - I’ll do something similar next week.

Damn - so jealous.  I missed out on this and the OF BP Rye although I did have that out at a restaurant.  Have you had both and if so, which did you like better?

BTW, the OF was my favorite pour of 2021.  Truly outstanding if you love rye like I do.
I had not tried the OG BP Rye, sadly. need to chase one down.

Side note: EH Taylor's limited release next fall will be a BP Rye.

Only JD barrel proof rye I've run across was in a random TX hill country town liquor store. It's excellent!

Hi @icon, would appreciate an entry (if not too late) into the JD BP pint you offered ... I've had the fortune of finding one of the JD barrel proof rye's in the wild (earlier this year), and it is absolutely fantastic.  Thanks man!

I fully support folks chasing whatever the hell they want, paying whatever they want chasing overpriced wheaters and MGP ryes. If you like it, bless you. Drink what you like. Pay what you want and enter lottos to get it, fine. None of my business.

But if this damn trend ever gets to my Wild Turkey 101 and I can't find it,  I'm going to fight somebody.

Just pure vanilla, caramel, spice,...just the most classic bourbon flavors in an honest proof the way Jimmy Russell wanted it. At an amazing price is a nice bonus.

E'rrrbody get into a bidding war over everything else. Just leave me my Turkey. And some OGD BIB and 114.
In honor of this post I picked up a bottle of 101 today.

Me to, albeit just the 50ml size since I've never tried it before. Got that and a sample size of Bulliet.  Couldn't resist and had the back to back earlier.  Had the Bulleit first and liked it very much.  The WT101 was a tad harsher but I liked it as well.

Is Kentucky Owl Bourbon any good? Asking because grocery store by my mother in laws has No.4 and No. 10 in stock but they are $300/bottle each for the 750 mL bottle.

I’ll preface this by saying I haven’t had any of their stuff - but I’ve heard their Ryes are more well thought of than their Bourbons.  $300 appears to be MSRP per BoozApp.

KY Owl batches 1-3 were pretty decent.

The whiskey they've bought since then... notably less so. Not even close to worth the silly prices they ask.

Quick question - If you could pick any two distilleries to see/sample on the KY bourbon trail - which would they be?

Thanks.  Will answer yours.

I haven't tried a rye yet (scurred   ) but I'd love to give it a shot. Enter me!

Also, we need to do another mystery sampling!

ETA: I can't read... too late :kicksrock:

I had a bottle that my son bought for me that I think he paid $140 for at the time. It was "ok" but not worth $140 let alone $300. Would drink Elijah Craig ALL DAY LONG for the price vs. Kentucky Owl.

Finally saw a bottle of Dickel Bottled in Bond around here.  I love Dickel 12, so I'm excited to see how the 13 year compares.

I finally tried a bottle of the basic 1792 (Small Batch). I've liked other Barton products, but I must say the the 1792 is a little disappointing.  It's somehow both fairly bland and a tad astringent. It's not terrible (no bourbon really is, I guess), but I wouldn't buy it again. There's just too many better whiskeys in it's price range.

The 1792 Full Proof and Sweet Wheat are my two favorites in their lineup.

I just want to point out that @[icon] is the MVP of this thread. He has been generous with his personal stash time and time again.
Definitely, guy is a mensch.  And like I mentioned, I want to pay it forward.  So let’s do another giveaway.  I’ll pick a random winner and the prize will be letting the winner pick any 3 pours out of my collection and I’ll send them in sample bottles.  Just @ me to enter.  I’m on crutches until next Thursday so let’s make next Friday the deadline to enter.

Note - I have a fairly large collection, about 100 bottles but I don’t have anything close to icon’s with his allocated stuff.  But anything will be fair game.

I'd like to give those a try. They only other Barton product* I've ever tried is Very Old Barton, which I love but can't get around here.

*Other than finding the bottom of a bottle of Fleischmann's or Ten High back when is I was still young, dumb, and well, all that.

I have to @AAABatteries and make a promise that I'll try to figure something out too then. I like this pay it forward circle of fun. Mine would mostly have to be Japanese I think.

I agree @AAABatteries. I was fortunate to sample a set of icon's tasty collection. I therefore have some sample bottles I have been looking to purpose. An unstructured bourbon vine makes as much sense as any... Thanks for paying generosity forward.

I've got Full Proof I'm happy to send you a sample of.  No Sweet Wheat at the moment though.

Bump

Right now it’s just Instinctive and BluesBomber but wanted to give others a shot.  I’ll try to get my bottle list updated to share in a day or two.

I was given a gift of Barrell Dovetail. The bottle says "Whiskey finished in rum, port & Dunn Vineyards cabernet barrels" cask strength 750ml 22,252 bottle#  122.54 proof 61.27% ALC/VOL

https://www.barrellbourbon.com/dovetail

Any opinions?
Barrell does some really interesting and delicious finishes.  Dovetail may be my favorite of the bunch.  If you like Ryes, the Barrell Seagrass is fantastic and made several Rye of the Year lists this year.  Curious what you will think of the Dovetail but if you like finished bourbon then I don’t think you’ll be disappointed.

too the top for AAA's generosity because...Karma, bourbon is good and it is what a once double  digit, former yellow pager should do...

Report?  I still haven't cracked mine open.
Glad you checked in to remind me - opened it for New Years -

One of the more flavorful Ive had lately - its finished in a sherry cask and you can definitely tell.  Strong hints of fruit and  a finishing taste of chocolate with not much bite.  Very smooth and almost like a desert.  I like it a lot as a counterpart to some of the stronger bourbons ive had but I view it as more of a desert treat on a special occasion.  The price point enforces that - not saying it isnt worth the price but it doesnt have that wow factor on some of the more expensive bottles.  Id put it at very good though and would recommend as an after dinner drink at your next special event.  Hope this helps!

So it appears I'm going to be more active in this thread as well, now that I've taken to liking bourbon along with scotch.

I was pretty happy just exploring scotch and lumping all bourbon talk in with my nightmarish experience with Jack Daniels when I was in high school, but something kept telling me there was more to it and I couldn't keep that door closed. As fate would have it, I've recently had many opportunities to sample local brands at various public events, car shows, craft/vendor fairs, etc., and nothing I tried really did anything for me until this past October, when I tried Twin Rivers Distillers' MD Whiskey Co. Black Label Bourbon. It had only a little burn on the tongue at first, but I enjoyed the aftertaste, which lingered from the time I left their booth until we had gone through the rest of the booths at this fair, a good 30-45+ minutes. Not bad for a sample-sized taste. I added it to my scotch rotation and had it when the mood hit me. After that was gone, I found myself with a little mad money around my birthday, so I figured I'd try something entry-level cost-wise.  Just as I grabbed a bottle of Four Roses, one of the staff, who noticed I was taking a long time trying to pick something, not only talked me into trying Smooth Ambler, he also gave me short list of brands he felt matched my tastes, mainly something less expensive that doesn't punch me in the face with the first sip. I'm trying to pace myself with that one, but I'm already down to only one solid pour left in the bottle. It's out of my normal price range, but if I find myself with an extra $30 or so, I'll probably pick up another bottle.

I also mentioned in an earlier post here that I had favorable experiences with Bulleit and Wild Turkey 101. After Christmas, I found myself with some unspent shopping money, so I grabbed a handle of Bulleit, which may also go quickly.

Much like I did with scotch, I'm going to work my way through the bargain basement, as even the Bulleit and Wild Turkey are a tad out of my spending comfort zone. Should be interesting.

I just realized that I totally flaked on this - in my defense my leg was in a cast and I was on pain meds.

Anyway, this will happen Friday so for any stragglers that want to enter just @ me.

Some low end suggestions for you - I think all will be at or below $30 depending on location and availability.  WT101 is be my go-to for value - not sure it can be beat.

- Elijah Craig Small Batch

- 1792 Small Batch

- Early Times BiB

- Buffalo Trace - had to throw it in, some find it impossible to find.  I’m able to get as much as I want for $25-30.

- Coopers Craft Reserve

- Something I recommend to folks because I think it’s great and is a little different (and a little more) is Redwood Empire’s Lost Monarch.  It is a bourye- bourbon, rye blend.

If you are wanting to branch out to ryes to:

- Old Forester rye (100 proof,  is delicious and can be found $20-25)

- WT101 Rye  (I like the bourbon better but their rye is a great value too)

- Rittenhouse is a solid rye, especially for mixed drinks
