This guy seems to be flying a bit under the radar. Couldnt find any youtube highlights, and hes rarely mentioned on the boards. Whats the upside here? Is he top 5 material? Is he more of a blocker? Where should he be ranked among tight ends in dynasty? Discuss........

I wouldn't say top 5, but he certainly should be a good TE for awhile. Despite blowing his knee out last November, he came back and played a full season. The one interesting note on the year is that Stafford rarely targeted Pettigrew from the 20 to 20, however he was a primary endzone target for Stafford. In the 3 games Stafford played, Pettigrew only caught 6 balls. However, he scored 2 of his 4 TDs in those games. Hill/Stanton seemed to really rely on Pettigrew between the 20s, but less so in the redzone. Pettigrew did have some issues with drops this year, but the guy caught 71 balls for 700+ yards which is really strong for a 2nd year TE. Pettigrew has no big play potential is quite slow. His balance isn't great and he won't be eluding anyone in the open field. However, he is large man and knows how to use it. He positions himself well to make catches over the middle and can fight for extra yards. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R3P7qwu84rg

This play is a perfect example of what he does in the redzone. He just steps in and uses his body to establish position.

I'm interested in what you guys think about this as well. Don't forget Scheffler signed a contract extension this past season. When Stafford was in, he seemed to target Scheffler more than Pettigrew. Hill and Stanton seemed to target Pettigrew more. Of course Stafford is the long-term QB, so how does this shake out in the future? Will Scheffler's presence dampen Pettigrew's production based on what we saw this season?

Top 12 TE with upside to be in the top 6 to 10 range. Is what I think.
I agree, it depends though on who is going to be QB in Detroit from what we saw this year.Stafford - Top 12 TE with upside to be in the top 6 to 10 rangeHill - Top 8 TE with upside to be in the top 4-6

I kind of agree with this. He's good but not elite, I'd put him in the Dustin Keller range, though I think Keller might have more natural talent as a receiver. Pettigrew's not good enough for me to overpay when there are a bunch of guys who may end up putting similar numbers.

Pettigrew is bigger and uses his body better while Keller has a bit more athleticism. Since Pettigrew did have the ACL tear, I think it is possible he takes a step forward next year and clearly separates himself from Keller.

He certainly could, but if one of Edwards or Holmes is gone next year I expect Keller to be a top 5 TE. He's great, they just don't use him enough.

Keller got 100+ targets, was the most targeted player on the team, and led the team in receptions. How much more do you expect? There were only about 30 guys in the whole league with more targets so if you expect much more you must be of the belief that Keller is the next Witten. One thing about Keller that is concerning is that he only caught 54% of the passes thrown his way. That is not a very strong number for a TE. Compare that to some of the other top TEs: Witten 73%, Pettigrew 64%, Gates 76%, Davis 60%, Mercedes Lewis 66%, etc. I actually didn't see any TEs in the top 12 with as poor a catch %.

keller was money until holmes came back. then he and Sanchez didnt seem to connect enough. Every pass seemed a bit off and keller lost some confidence and dropped the ball

It seems like a lot of people are underrating Petigrew.

The guy had a very good year just a season removed from tearing his ACL. He's a very good receiver, and just as importantly, a good blocker, that will keep him on the field virtually all the time.

Granted, Stafford can't stay upright, so it's gauge to see whether he will use Petigrew as much as Hill and Stanton did. But no doubt he will be a big part of the offense going forward.

I could see him as a top 5 TE - maybe not next year, but perhaps the year after as some of the incumbents start to age a bit.

Agreed. Pettigrew finished 8th in a high performance ppr league I played this year and 6th in my big play bonus league. Granted, it was a down year for TE's overall which needs to be factored in but people are basically saying this was the ceiling for a second year TE coming off of an ACL injury in an offense that targeted TE's 186 times.
