How Dusty can keep running him out in the 4 spot is one of the most stubborn moves i've ever seen. I don't watch many Red games, so I'd appreciate the feedback from anyone thats seen him, but right now he's a healthy scratch in my fantasy line up. WTF is with the guy?

A little early to be panicking imho. He's probably not a .300 hitter, but somewhere around .270 or .280. One 4 for 4 day will send his average over .220 and a couple of decent days after that and this isn't really a conversation anymore unless you want to discuss lack of power.

I'd actually say his early stat line is encouraging in a way.

Phillips has always had horrific plate discipline, but has 11 BB to 10 K to start this season. Short-term BA involves a lot of luck, but you don't accidentally learn to be a more patient hitter.

I wouldn't be worried at all and would actually try to buy low if his owners in my leagues were panicking.

Just curious, who would you put at cleanup if you were Dusty? Doesn't make a ton of sense to put your only 2 lefties back to back and Encarnacion is off to an even worse start. As a Reds fan, I have always thought Phillips was overrated, but its not like Dusty is passing over better options here.

I'm very surprised to read that 11BB/10 K line based on his preseason comments, which basically said 'you get on base by getting hits, not walks.'I think the K/BB rate's more unusual than his early season BA struggles. I haven't watched any of the Reds but based off what I know my best guess is he's getting nothing to hit, which is leading to more walks than usual but also worse contact on the ball when he does connect because he's not a patient hitter by any means.

Yesterday was a nice line for him. He honestly didn't look any different at the plate than any other night. the ball was just able to find more space.

I don't think it is any coincindence that right after Jay Bruce starts to hit the ball a little, Phillips starts finding some pitches to hit. I think the BB/K ratio is more reflective of that than anything else.

He may be overrated offensively, but he surely isn't a .150 hitter. Its a slump. I'm not worried. I will take his defense any day and if they can be in contention in June and pick up a good 4 hole righty with some pop, BP at 6 is

Gonzalez needs to find his stroke soon after a year off and EE looks lost at the plate. Hopefully he can figure it out after he comes off the DL.

Oh, wait, was this a Reds thread?

Why were they so quick to dump Keppinger if Gonzalez looks like hell?

The dropoff from either Gonzalez or Janish to Keppinger defensively is HUGE. I don't think Dusty thought the difference in bat was ever going to be enough to drop from a top 5 fielding shortstop to possibly the worst. Keppinger's fielding stats aren't that terrible, but ask anyone who watched Reds games if he can play short. Its pretty much a joke. That said, I have wished we had him to pinch hit a few times this year.

The official word when he was traded was the same drivel you get after most trades. Better situation for the player, wouldn't get enough playing time to keep him sharp. Either way, he was a defensice liability. Reds have 19? errors in 21 games so far this year, so its not like they are playing sound ball right now anyway. If they start hitting a little, I think they will be fine and Keppinger will be forgotten.

BP hit two more shots last night, got nothing out of them. He's going to be fine if he quits trying to be Adam Dunn with every swing.

3-5 6 RBIS, 1HR, he was caught stealing. My favorite part of the night was when Cody Ross got picked off. Brandon snuck up from behind has Votto charged a bunt and Brandon put his foot right in front of the bag and Cody slid head first and looked like Rick Ankiesl face hitting a wall.
