Brian Calhoun says he is 100% (1 Viewer)

This has been a particularly taxing offseason for Brian Calhoun, who has been rehabbing a knee injury. Sunday, though, he pronounced himself fit and ready -- "I'm 100 percent'' -- for the physical challenge and punishment of another training camp.

Also says alot of nice stuff about some things he and Brandon Williams (now WR with the 49'rs) are doing.

the Brian Calhoun Non-contact Youth Football Camps. The one-day sessions, for boys and girls (ages 8 through 18), drew roughly 400 kids in Lancaster, according to Calhoun, and 150 to 200 in Milwaukee. Calhoun is hoping to improve on those numbers next year. To this end, another former Badger, wide receiver Brandon Williams, now a member of the San Francisco 49ers, is following the same lead by sponsoring a youth camp Saturday in his hometown of St. Louis.

"It's pretty cool to have two camps of my own in my first year and it's something I definitely want to keep doing,'' said the 23-year-old Calhoun, who enlisted the support and services of former teammates from Colorado (Joel Klatt and Marcus Moore) and Wisconsin (Houston Oilers tight end Owen Daniels and Jason Palermo). In addition, he tapped into the UW-Whitewater program (Derek Stanley and Trey Bell) and extended an invitation to some current UW players (Tyler Donovan, Luke Swan and Paul Hubbard).

Calhoun believes the camps can be a good forum for pro and college athletes to "lead by example and show what can be achieved'' to young kids who may be seeking direction and inspiration. When asked about NFL commissioner Roger Goodell and his message -- namely his hardline stance on "conduct detrimental to the league" -- Calhoun said, "It needed to be done as far as some of the incidents that have occurred. I'm not bashing or talking about anybody specifically, but if you look at the facts, there has been a lot of stuff that didn't need to happen. He (Goodell) is setting the ground rules and making the examples that, Hey, this is not going to be tolerated and if you do step over the line, you're going to be punished.' "

Who's Brian Calhoun?

And how does he fit in with TJ Duckett, Tatum Bell, Kevin Jones, and Aveion Cason?

I really like Tatum Bell this year guys. He's the best RB right now in Detroit if you ask me. He did not have THAT BAD of a year in Denver last year. I am targeting him this year as a "Sleeper" in later rounds. He has the potential to have a BIG year if he stays healthy and out of the Dog House.

I doubt if Bell has a good year; he can't catch a cold . . .

I saw Calhoun out at Bar Louie in Milwaukee this past Saturday night.

He looked healthy enough to hit on hot young women all night. Move him up your draft boards accordingly.

Thing to remember at Calhoun - great hands - truly great recieving skills at the RB spot

At Colorado, before he transferred and shredded Auburn (Have I mentioned that yet?), he actually was a starting WR. Transferred to the Badgers because they would let him be a RB.

If Calhouns knee is truly better, he will be in the mix to back up Kevin Jones, or start if KJ cant come back

Good points on Calhoun. He made a lot of defenses look slooowwww, not just Auburn. And, yes, he has super hands. He's not very big, so it's questionable if he could ever carry the load as a featured back, but if things fall right for him, he could carve himself a nice role in the Mike Martz offense. He's a far better receiver than Tatum Bell and T.J. Duckett, but Kevin Jones is no slouch -- when healthy. That tag goes for both Jones and Calhoun. Regardless of what this article says, I'm not so sure he'll be 100% this entire season, but he could pull a Braylon Edwards and be "ready" earlier than most people expected. Still, he won't be 100% this year even if he does make the roster and get onto the field. Next year? Anything could happen..

Tatum Bell is nothing more than a stop-gap solution, IMO. He couldn't beat out Mike Bell and Reuben Droughns. He's not that good.

Kevin Jones is the best back on the roster when healthy. After him, Calhoun is the most intriguing dynasty option.

Calhoun, IF healthy, has skills. Very good, NFL type hands and shiftiness - which is perfect for Detroit's system. He could really surprise, health permitting.

Until he came down with turf toe, he did a pretty solid job of sending Mike Bell to the bench last year.

That was just a ploy to motivate Mike Bell....

It's that kind of information that makes FG's so much better than the rest.He looked healthy enough to hit on hot young women all night. Move him up your draft boards accordingly.

great call smackdaddies! Now we have twice as many reasons to move him up our draft boards since he is showing all his moves with the ladies on Saturday night.seriously though, Calhoun will be long forgotten by most people in your league who are not FBG's so don't forget to grab this guy late in your draft. Some might have already given up on him and could be available on WW.

As a number of people have already said, this guy is a wonderful RB fit for the Martz system. In dynasty leagues I would be looking at handcuffing him instead of Bell to KJones.

Calhoun has virtually no chance to be a factor in Detroit this year. According to Kowalski (Lions beat writer), the Lions soured on him even before he was hurt last year. He is 5th or 6th on the depth charts. He also appears likely to begin the season on the PUP list. My personal gut feeling is that the Lions want to stash him on IR this season if they can.

I drafted Calhoun early second round of a rookie draft last year, and I remember this well. It evened seemed Martz was the least impressed with Calhoun, and there's very little reason to be excited about him right now. His fans were vocal last preseason, and obviously they still think he has the chops. I hope they're right, but I have a feeling the great season at Wisconsin may not have told the true story. It wouldn't be the first time.

[Calhoun stasher in a dynasty league]Well, you'd know more about Kowalski than I, but I always look at those "the team is not thrilled with [rookie name]" quotes as beat writers being used for motivational purposes. If it was leaked to Kowalski before the injury, maybe he was hitting a rookie wall. Maybe the team planned to give him more touches and wanted to place a chip on his shoulder. Maybe it was leaked after the injury to motivate him to rehab quickly, or to downplay the impact of the injury. No one will ever know. It's hard to fathom how a guy with 2300 yards of production and 24 TDs in one 350 touch season of Big Ten play could not being taken seriously. It's not as if that's an annual accomplishment for Wisconsin RBs. Also, if memory serves, after just that one season Alvarez called Calhoun the best RB prospect to come out of the Wisconsin program.

Calhoun was seemingly a consensus top 5-8 RB coming out last year, and his skillset seems to be a nice fit for a Martz system. That he was shifted to WR at Colorado only reinforces that for me. Anyway, I recommend people pick him up on the cheap while he's overshadowed by also-rans like T.Bell and Duckett. It can't cost that much to do, and it could bring a big reward.

Agreed. Don't get the love for Calhoun at all, and I own him in one of my dynasty leagues. He looked great in college, but was not looking good in his rookie reason and THEN blew out his knee. Then his team goes out gets TWO fairly big-name RBs in addition to last year's starter (who happens to be a young, former 1st round draft pick). But hey, if the starter and the two guys they brought in all look horrible AND Calhoun recovers quickly from his blown knee AND he picks up the NFL game this year (like he didn't seem to last year), he could have some value.

Oilers!? Both writer & editor here deserve a raise... I too drafted Calhoun in the 2nd round last year - I had high hopes for him, but at this point from what I've seen & read, I'm assuming bust. If he returns from injury and gives me anything more it'll be gravy, I guess.

offdee is good peopleCalhoun had a disappointing start to his career last year, esp. getting blown up in pass protection. He better be 100% so he can earn that trust he didn't get last year.
