No Big Ben, but Dolphins-Steelers opener matches streaking teams

Associated Press

National Football League News Wire

PITTSBURGH -- They were the NFL's hottest team at the end of last season, with numerous reasons to think they will be better still in 2006. Their quarterback's exceptional offseason injury recovery makes them all the more optimistic this could be a championship season.

The Super Bowl champion Pittsburgh Steelers, right? Wrong. Try the Miami Dolphins.

The Steelers and Dolphins meet Thursday night in the NFL's opening game, but one that originally wasn't planned to match these opponents. A rematch of the Steelers-Broncos AFC championship game was anticipated, but the Broncos pressured to get out of the game and the Dolphins took their place.

Which raises this question: Is playing in the NFL's showcase opener a reward or an unjust penalty for the Dolphins, who missed the playoffs despite ending the regular season with a league-best six consecutive victories?
So Denver "pressured" to get out of the game with the Steelers---how does that work? Was it Bowlen or Shanahan applying this "pressure"? Who gave in to it?I've never heard of anything like this before. C'mon Sharks, explain me this one.

Being reported that it was Shanahan. He felt that it was unfair because they had a road game the last game of the pre-season.

Is there a rule against that? Doesn't sound like it would hold much water...unless of course you're one of the longest tenured coaches in the league. Talk about throwing your weight around...

That makes zero sense as they are still playing away the first week and they are still playing the steelers at Pittsburgh in week 9.

That's pretty weak. I had forgotten, but I heard a couple years back that the NFL was pushing towards making the season opening games a rematch of the Super Bowl winner vs. their conference championship game opponent.

But they don't have a short week after an away game.

Probably lucky for the stEAlers! Mia will beat them down good anyways.
At what point does the whining moaning and crying end??
it will probably end after the next Super Bowl, then we get a whole new batch of babies. Doesn't surprise me either that the Scientist has his roster in his sig.

The pressure was really aimed at Tatum Bell, Shanahan got out of the Steelers game saying that Tatum wouldn't be ready to lead the team. Just another ploy to motivate Tatum by Skeletor.

As a Steelers fan I am glad that Shanny got his way. I would much rather play the Dolphins than the Broncos, especially without Big Ben. The Dolphins had a nice winning streak at the end of last season but if memory serves, the schedule was pretty weak.

That is not to say the game is going to be a cakewalk for the Steelers. I think the Dolphins have improved and when you take out Ben, the Steelers are going to have their hands full.

But I would still rather play the Dolphins than the Broncos so I say thank you Skeletor for being a whiner.

Considering how bad the Steelers beat down the Broncos in the the AFCC last year, I'd want to delay a rematch as long as I can if I'm Shanahan.

So, this isn't suprising.

:D

Probably didn't want to face them at home game 1 when the crowd will be amped and flying when they announce the "world champion pittsburgh steelers".

Much better hope for a letdown week 9,
