Calvin Johnson (ankle) opts for treatment over practice. again. (1 Viewer)

Was alarmed to see that red cross on his name as I own in in all 3 of my leagues. But this doesn't seem too bad. FWIW he did have some ankle problems back in August so this is worth watching, but it seems this is precautionary and he should be fine to go.

Calvin Johnson: Calvin Johnson rolled ankle, misses practice

Calvin Johnson - WR - DET - Sep. 14 - 1:56 pm etCalvin Johnson was held out of Lions practice Wednesday as a precaution after rolling his ankle in last week's demolition of the Bucs.

Johnson opted for treatment over practicing, but should be back on the field by Thursday or Friday. He has a juicy Week 2 matchup against an Eric Berry-less Chiefs defense that allowed four Ryan Fitzpatrick TD passes in Week 1. Sep. 14 - 1:56 pm et

Not concerned, seems like the Lions are going to give him time off this year to make sure he remains healthy.. he was off last week too

Agreed. I would really be fine with them 'westbrooking' him and just playing on gamedays. Like I said, not a real cause for concern, but something to keep an eye on.

I have to admit, I like when teams do this...Burress had it done to him during his last season with the Giants and it really enabled him to play well on Sundays...too bad they did not strap a bullet proof vest to his leg...

Calvin caught the Bucs' attempted onside kick, which he jumped about 50 feet in the air for, and was in the end zone to defend against a Hail Mary on the last play of the game. He couldn't have been too banged up unless he hurt it leaving the field.

Guys that get dinged up a lot like Calvin should only be practicing twice per week anyway. Contact drills anyway. Running routes and catching balls is fine, just stay away from contact drills most of the week.

Megatron comments on ankle .. Would prefer "I am fine" to "I should be fine" :) .. He talks about swelling too

http://blogs.detroitlions.com/2011/09/14/johnson-on-missing-practice-i-should-be-fine/

“Didn’t practice today because I rolled my ankle. I should be fine, I just have to get the swelling out so it doesn’t blow back up – getting treatment a couple times a day.

“Happy with our performance at Tampa. We did a lot of work in the two-and-a-half quarters that we were really on it. That last quarter-and-a-half we were trying to just run the clock out, but for the time that were out there running around, we did real well.

“Matt was spreading the ball out to different receivers and he was giving it to me when he saw the one-on-one situations. He did a good job of recognizing those one-on-one situations and getting the ball to me. Dishing it out to the open man, basically.

“Kansas City lost Eric Berry and I’m sure to them it’s a big deal. Losing any kind of Pro Bowl player anywhere on the field is going to be deal for any team. That’s going to be tough in coverage and going to be tough in stopping the run because he did all of the above, but we know they’ll be prepared.

“They have good, young corners. The safety that filled in for Eric last game is well coached and, from watching film, he’s in the right places. We just have to be disciplined. They’re going to scheme us and we just have to be able to react to whatever they do, whether it’s man or zone.”

According to some reports today Megatron missed practice again today... I'm not worried at this point, but given some of his past injuries this is a situation to monitor. Yesterday he said he would be playing, but wanted to get some of the swelling down.

If Johnson and Stafford could stay healthy they could be scary, but given these two track records that is a very big IF.

It was nice while it lasted in Detroit....No doubt Javid Best, Matthew Stafford and Nate Burleson will be injured within the next two weeks...Is there a "softer" team in the NFL?

Even if they do stay healthy, they're the 3rd best in their division, and likely not a playoff team.

Duct tape needed in isle Detroit Lions.

Just noticed an update. I guess he has a minor sprain and is being held out to get some "minor swelling" down. They said he is in no danger of missing any time...I still say these guys are made of glass.

Yes, the Lions are made of glass. I have been a Lions fan for years and they seem to always get hurt. This year is no different. They have a starting QB and #1 RB that are both bad bets to make it thru the season without injury. They are much more talented than Lions teams of the last 10 years, and last year managed to win games even with players hurt. The Lions are headed in the right direction, we will see how the season unfolds.

It does seem like they have an inordinate number of minor nagging injuries. Am I not remembering correctly or has calvin seemingly always had a few weeks each season where his back or his ankle or knee or something was limiting him ongoingly? Not sure if that led to missed games but I seem to recall his name coming up in question almost as much as SJAX.

I've been a CJ owner for like 3 years in a row. Seems like he ALWAYS has something. He rarely misses games but is always dealing with a shoulder or ankle or something throughout the week.

Puhhleeze. How many points you whiney #####es get for thursday practice receptions? :lmao: If he has any issue with his ankle, I'd rather he keep his terrifying 6-5 260lb frame off the pavement... i mean astroturf and just save it for gameday. You really think Megatron needs to practice at this point?

They prolly get more injuries than most because they play on a parking lot. And to any of you that have never felt 'field turf' it's not that much different from being tackled on the carpet over a cement floor. Plus, search function down? I started a thread to monitor his ankle status yesterday here,

Do we really need a new one every day for the same issue? I know this one is light on info and heavy on whining, but these prolly should be merged.

I don't think Calvin likes to practice. Who cares as long as he shows up on Sundays?

ALLEN PARK -- Nothing much changed from Wednesday with the Detroit Lions' injury situation.

For the second day in a row, wide receiver Calvin Johnson (ankle) and safety Louis Delmas (hip) sat out. Also sidelined were second-year offensive tackle Jason Fox and rookie defensive tackle Nick Fairely.

Returning to the practice field after his customary Wednesday rest day was defensive end Kyle Vanden Bosch.

Cornerback Alphonso Smith and wide receiver Maurice Stovall, who were limited in practice yesterday, were participating in morning drills. Whether they fully participated in practice will be known later today when the Lions release their full injury report at 4 p.m. today.

Finally, rookie receiver Titus Young appears to still be dealing with lingering hamstring tightness. During a receiver drill, Young temporarily left to get stretched out by a trainer. He was able to return to drills, running and cutting normally, before media was asked to leave the practice field.

Lions' Calvin Johnson has injured ankle but will play vs. Chiefs

Tim Twentyman/ The Detroit News

Allen Park— Receiver Calvin Johnson didn't practice Wednesday, but it had nothing to do with the shoulder injury he has been nursing since camp.

Johnson rolled his left ankle in last week's 27-20 victory over the Buccaneers, and is dealing with some swelling and pain.

He had the ankle heavily wrapped Wednesday, and it looked slightly swollen in the locker room after practice.

"I'll be all right," he said. "I'm treating it every morning and afternoon trying to get it to heal."

Johnson, who finished with 88 yards and two touchdowns, said he wasn't worried at all about missing Sunday's game against the Chiefs, though.

The Chiefs allowed four touchdown passes last week in a loss to the Bills, and will be playing without their best defender — safety Eric Berry (torn ACL).

"It's going to create some opportunities for us," Johnson said of Berry's injury.

Wary of Chiefs

The Lions are 8-point favorites at home. A 2-0 start surely is in the cards, right?

Not so fast.

"This is the NFL; you can't read too much into one week," coach Jim Schwartz said. "That's a good football team. We aren't going to be looking at that score and be overconfident.

"We know better than to judge any team on just one week."

The players weren't taking the Chiefs lightly, either.

"In my history in the NFL, playing a team right after them getting their butts kicked is the most dangerous thing you can do," receiver Nate Burleson said.

Other players missing practice: defensive end Kyle Vanden Bosch (rest) and safety Louis Delmas (hip pointer).

… Receiver Maurice Stovall (cast, right hand) practiced, but was limited.

… The Lions signed former Buccaneers tight end Nathan Overbay (6-foot-5, 270 pounds) to the practice squad. He replaces tight end Cornelius Ingram , who was placed on the practice squad injured list.

Chiefs at Lions

Kickoff: 1 p.m. Sunday, Ford Field, Detroit

TV/radio: CBS/97.1

Records: Kansas City 0-1, Detroit 1-0

Line: Detroit by 8

Series: Kansas City leads 7-4 (Detroit 25-20, Dec. 23, 2007)

Did you know?: The Lions are 1-0 against the Chiefs at Ford Field.

From The Detroit News: http://detnews.com/article/20110914/SPORTS0101/109140417/Lions’-Calvin-Johnson-has-injured-ankle-but-will-play-vs.-Chiefs#ixzz1Y3eD3UOf

Lions receiver Calvin Johnson said he should be fine for Sunday's home opener against Kansas City after he rolled his left ankle in the season opener.

"Get the swelling out, and I'll be ready," said Johnson, who missed Wednesday's heavy practice in helmets and shoulder pads. "I'm walking fine, it's just you've got to get the swelling out before you can do anything. If you don't get that out, it'll just blow back up. Then I'll be down for even longer."

It is not clear when Johnson injured his ankle during Sunday's 27-20 win over Tampa Bay.

Johnson hurt his left shoulder in the exhibition opener and missed the next game. He landed hard on his shoulders at least once against the Bucs, but he said his shoulder was fine.

"No, it actually came out real good," he said. "Not even sore at all."

INJURY REPORT: Johnson was one of three starters who sat out practice. Defensive end Kyle Vanden Bosch took his usual Wednesday off after neck surgery last December, and safety Louis Delmas was out after suffering a hip pointer on the final play against the Bucs.

Receiver and special-teams ace Maurice Stovall (hand) was limited in practice, as was cornerback Alphonso Smith (foot).

FAIRLEY, FOX CLOSER: Defensive tackle Nick Fairley and offensive lineman Jason Fox remain out with foot injuries.

"We're getting closer on both of them," coach Jim Schwartz said. "Both of them are making really good progress. Both of them are on their rehab schedules and haven't had any setbacks, so we'll get those guys on the field just as soon as we can. But they're both closer than they were last week, and they're both closer than they were yesterday. But they both still have a little ways to go."

CHARLES IN CHARGE: Last year, the Chiefs had the No. 1 rushing offense and averaged 164.2 yards per game.

However, Kansas City gained only 108 rushing yards in its opening 41-7 loss to Buffalo. The Chiefs had 80 yards rushing at the half, but were down, 20-7, and forced to pass in the second half.

The Lions are clearly concerned with Kansas City's run game. It was the first thing Schwartz mentioned after practice. He keyed on Jamaal Charles averaging 6.38 yards per carry last season, when he ran for 1,467 yards.

"So they're a very good running team," Schwartz said. "They ran the ball very well against Buffalo. They got behind in the score, had a couple of turnovers, and it makes it very difficult to continue to run."

Charles' per-carry average was the highest in the NFL since Jim Brown averaged 6.4 yards in 1963, when he rushed for 1,863.

"I had a chance to play against Jamaal Charles last year and you talk about a guy that's explosive," linebacker Stephen Tulloch said. "He reminds me a lot of a guy I played with, Chris Johnson, from a standpoint that he's a game-breaker.

"You've definitely got to contain him and stop him from getting to the perimeters. Once he gets to the outside and has a lane, he's gone. We have our hands full this week."

ROSTER MOVE: The Lions signed tight end Nathan Overbay to the practice squad and placed tight end Cornelius Ingram on practice squad injured reserve. Overbay spent most of last season on Tampa Bay's practice squad. The Bucs waived him after this year's fourth exhibition game.

miss Wed practice - nothing to see here

Happy with our performance at Tampa. We did a lot of work in the two-and-a-half quarters that we were really on it. That last quarter-and-a-half we were trying to just run the clock out, but for the time that were out there running around, we did real well.
Kind of scary for opposing defenses. I wonder if Schwartz will take this approach in the future considering Tampa made a game of it late. I was at the game, and it was obvious that Detroit took their foot off the gas. They could have beaten the Bucs by 20.

It is starting to look that way.Best is as fragile as they come, everytime Stafford gets touched I cringe, CJ always seems to have something going on, LeShoure out for the year, Fairly is still gimping around, Titus Young is dealing with a hammy issue. Enough..
You mean they are suffering from bumps and bruises like every team? Cool. They already sai yesterday he is in no danger of missing time and will play. Non story until he misses games. Are we talking about practice? I also think that everytime people say that Tebow has not performed well in practice, but some how wins games when he plays.

I dont want him to practice. Just pull him out of a hibernation chamber about 1 hour before gametime then just pop him in just afterwards is fine by me.

should bench him like the rest of the shark pool did last year for this gamehttp://www.pro-football-reference.com/boxscores/201010170nyg.htm

In all seriousness the guy gets up so high on jump balls when he comes down he comes down hard. He'll be there on Sunday.

I don't think Calvin likes to practice. Who cares as long as he shows up on Sundays?
My buddy who works for the Press says its well known that CJ hates practice and uses his status to miss it. Nothing to see here. Start with confidence.

Not all of us... About 10 of us were very vocal the other way, myself and grahamburner most notably. That was a fun week. listening to all the boo birds saying they were benching MEGA and then crying afterward...

Kinda like the people who were mad when barry wouldn't come to OTA's and get beat up by 3rd and 4th stringers trying to make the squad. I agree with amos. I don't know why everyone worries about these guys missing practice. Especially 'special talents'. It's not like mega doesn't know his routes. Let him save it for the game before he has to a la Brian westrbook of a few years back.

He doesn't speak for all Bears fans. The Lions are doing good things, and I expect the games against them this year to be good ones. If Stafford can stay healthy, the Lions can cause lots of teams problems.

Last year after a bad outing (IIRC Megatron left the game early with the leg injury)and with detroit down to their 3rd or 4th qb some SP morons started a "who are you benching megatron for thread" you should have seen the names. I wonder if someone smarter than me with the search function could find it. I don't have the time or patience today to wrestle with our backward ### forum search box.

x2 :goodposting: Some good Megatron owners tips:The moment you contemplate benching him, punch yourself in the junk.If you find yourself sharing an opinion with a Bears fan, seek other opinions. No, Nate Burleson will not be a sneaky/heads-up/shark playI think a lot of people came around by Sunday and ended up starting him.
