Calvin Johnson -- I think he'll be a stud... (1 Viewer)

I picked up Calvin Johnson as my 3rd WR. I'm in the "he'll have a huge impact even as a rookie" camp.

But do you start him in Week 1? (I know it depends on alternatives. I'm not listing mine since I don't want this to turn into an AC post. Just assume there are decent, yet unspectacular options).

NO. week 1 if you have a porven steady WR use him, see how they use the rookie
I disagree with this line of thinking. You don't draft a player in the 5th round to not start them.If you are in the camp that would draft a rookie WR in the 5th round, you should have confidence in him and start him.I don't have him on any of my teams because I don't like the idea of drafting a rookie WR so high. So, I'm in the camp that believes he's not going come out of the gates firing. But if I did draft him that high, then I would start him if it's a WR 3 league.

First of all, it was the 6th, not the 5th.

I believe he will have a big impact this year -- that doesnt mean it won't take a number of games before that happens. That was sort of the point of my question -- it's not unreasonable to think that he will come out slow out of the gate as he learns the NFL but then be huge as the season progresses...

I think you play him early if youve got him. The Lions are going to pass all day. Im not saying theyre going to light up the Raiders, but the yardage should be there at the end of the game. And teams dont really have alot of film to study off this guy, so I dont think they appreciate just how physical CJ is. He's going to dwarf whoever he's on, and on somewhat of a slow Oakland field, I think his size moreso than his speed will factor in. He's a good play, imo.

Not knowing who your alternatives are it is hard to say but I would give him serious consideration. CJ may not go into the game as even the listed starter but he will have his opportunities and should produce nicely - I tend to start out with more emphasis on the high celing rather than the consistent producer early in the season because often times the player with the high ceiling can surprise out the gate just like Mr. consistency can come out slowly - neither they nor the team they are facing will be in mid season form.

it is an assistant coach so i'll berate you for putting an in cognito assistant coach post in this forum

i don't care who you start

Can it....1/2 the talk in here can be construed as WDIS (and assistant coach forum). It's a legit question and worthy of this forum. I have CJ and initially put him in due to depth issues, but later picked up Welker off the wire and sat CJ. IMHO, CJ may be a risky 3rd WR play. I hear CJ needs a bit more time to figure it out.

I agree that this is a legit forum to have this thread in.

I have Calvin in two leagues. He is not starting for me in either league. Redraft I just happen to have better options at this point with Ward and Santana Moss while flexing Lynch. In my Dynasty league I was going to start Calvin, but had a change of heart this morning and I'm going with the big righty out of the bullpen. Patrick Crayton.

This thread belongs here.

I have Calvin in 6 dynasty leagues, but am only starting him in 1 league, where its Calvin or Dunn or Betts. In all the other leagues, decided I'd start proven guys.

start the rookie in his debut. Great players step up in big games, and this being his first in the NFL makes it a big game. Do you think he's great?? If so, dont overthink it...start the great player against the worst team in the league.

"would you guys start him or cotch?"

See, this is a great question. I think CJ will end up with better season stats. But I'd start Cotchery over CJ this week because Cotchery is more proven. One of the options I'm looking at is Welker, who is on a new team so that's also an unproven situation.

At this point Im looking at CJ because of this argument which I think is one of the best posted in this thread:

"I tend to start out with more emphasis on the high celing rather than the consistent producer early in the season because often times the player with the high ceiling can surprise out the gate just like Mr. consistency can come out slowly - neither they nor the team they are facing will be in mid season form."

Did anybody think they should have started Randy Moss in his first game???? This guy has all the physical tools moss HAD and he has a very similar pass happy offense ( EXPECIALLY when his OC is a man named Mike Martz). Yes, I do have Calvin Johnson and if you think Moss should have started his first NFL game, then I think the same should be said for Ca. Johnson

The Lions will throw the ball 40+ times today... roy will get a lot of looks 10+, furrey will get the second most looks 8+, bell/johnson will get their looks maybe 5-7 looks? perhaps 3 catches?

58yds and a TD so far, 9 minutes left in the 3rd.

Yup -- I was kicking myself after the 1st Q of the Jets-Pats game (benched Welker for CJ as my WR3) but turned out all right.

Calvin Johnson

Andre Johnson with a real NFL caliber QB

Ronald Curry

Brandon Marshall

That's what I call a studly group of WR's. :) Damn, I can scout WR's.
