Tigers call Maybin up to the big leagues

August 17, 2007

FREE PRESS SPORTS WRITER

A little over one week ago, the Tigers promoted top prospect Cameron Maybin to Double-A Erie. At the time, club president/general manager Dave Dombrowski said Maybin would not be a candidate for a September call-up.

But that was before Maybin crushed pitching at Double-A, to the tune of a .400 average and four home runs in six games.

Now, the club has decided to call Maybin up to the big leagues. An announcement is expected today, although it’s not clear what the roster move will be.

Maybin, 20, has already arrived in New York, and will be in uniform at Yankee Stadium tonight.

“It’s the stage that he wants to start on,” said Bob Baratta, one of his representatives. “It doesn’t get any bigger than that.

“He’s not starting at Tropicana Field. He’s starting at Yankee Stadium.”

Maybin, a brilliant centerfielder, has batted .316 with 14 home runs and 53 RBIs this year, during stops at Erie, Class A Lakeland, and a rehabilitation assignment in the Gulf Coast League.

Check back with Freep.com later today for more details.

Why wouldn't they wait a couple weeks?
He wasn't on the 40 man roster and it doesn't say who is getting moved out. They called him up because they think he can help right now and calling him up in two weeks makes no real difference with a guy like this IMO. He's probably as ready now as he'll be and with his range, speed, and power he can make an instant impact. Anyway it all boils down to whose roster place he is taking and if it is Thames or Monroe, I will tell you that it is done because the Tigers really don't have any better options. Might as well give the kid a look. The Tigers really only have two position players they can move and that would be Raburn back to Triple A which I doubt, the release of Craig Monroe, or someone got put on the DL (Thames again?). It could mean the Tigers dropped a pitcher also but I doubt it. On Maybin he's the best young OF I've ever seen play at this age and development level. I'm sure there were better in the past, I just didn't see them.

Can't wait to see Maybin play, hopefully tonight.. I thought this might happen two months ago, but I think push came to shove and, like DD said, his development isn't going to be helped along much more by him staying in Erie. The kid is ready and he's got speed, power, defense, everything.

We may lose a year on the arbitration clock, but if it betters our chances late in games with him out there defensively and potentially adding ANOTHER catalyst into our lineup... all the better.

We needs Ws right now in the worst way, and the timing is perfect IMO.. let him debut in the greatest stage of them all - Yankee Stadium.

I'm one fired up Tiger fan looking forward to tonight's game.

Desperate
For a championshipI like the move, Mike Valenti on WXYT am 1270 said the move for a minor league OF the other day might mean this move was coming. Even if Maybin doesnt start, he's a good late inning pitch runner/ D replacement most games. But I think he will start cause bringing him up to sit might stunt his growth a little.Leyland always said he'd take talent over experience. Cant wait to see him play 2nite

Key statement right there, and something I love about Leyland. I'm totally in that camp. If you have talent, let's see whatcha got.. especially if we're not rushing the kid along too much. In the context of this year, it makes good sense. Maybin CAN help the team this year tremendously in the late innings, and if he continues to hit the ball and draw walks at this level, he just might help on a full-time basis in LF.. Maybin and Granderson will be here for a long time, hopefully.

Maybin will play CF and bat 2nd tonight in his major league debut. He will sport the #4, so all of you with Higgy jersey's can put some tape and "Maybin" on the back.

I haven't been this excited since Dee had her first period on What's Happening.

ETA: Correction, LF.

Guy doesn't have a 1000 ABs in the minors. And now he's facing the big boys in a pennant race. Move reeks of desperation.
Yeah....no players without a lot of minor league experience are worthy. :goodposting:
I didn't say he wasn't worthy...even though he's probably not. It's just a desperate move.
It's really not a desperation move. It's Craig Monroe, Timo Perez, or Cameron Maybin. Seriously who would you want on your team?

Again, not the point. I'd rather not stunt the development of my prime prospect.

That's a valid concern. I think he will get a long look and if he has trouble he'll probably be shelved. Tigers will have more options when they expand the rosters.

And if he plays well?

I don't think this stunts his growth at all.

First AB, K on three pitches. Yankee fans then boo Sheffield because I guess he screwed them or something.
You were in Germany, so I'll let it slide, but he called Joe Torre a racist and hasn't shut his mouth about how much he misses NY.
Boy you guys take offense to everything. I'll bet not paying a gambling debt doesn't go over well in that area.

Even though he's struck out twice tonight, this kid is going to be special. He played little league for my dad and his parents still live across the street from my parents. They are all at the game tonight  I watched this kid grow up and now I am watching him in his first MLB game...pretty cool !!!!!

Awesome. You're from Asheville? He's a pretty good kid no? Seems very happy about life and all. Can't drink and drive though. Not good.

Yeah...born and raised. He played for the same HS coach that I did. This kid's a good one. Made a dumb decision with the D&D, but he's 20 freakin' years old. To listen to him talk about the negotiations of his contract it was amazing. He didn't care about the $$...he kept saying "I just want to play baseball". Very quiet from a very good family.

A rather inauspicious start to a career. Forget the AB's. He looked very lost in LF.
I think I can cut him a break for being a 20 year old kid playing his first MLB game in Yankee Stadium at a position he's never played before. He had two plays that stand out to me. One was a hard hit ball that turned him around a little bit and the other he went into the corner too aggressively while the ball was bouncing around. I see those mistakes by MLB vets so I can cut a rookie some slack given the overwhelming situation he was in.

I still think it is a year too early to bring him up. I don`t like the move.
I honestly don't know what their plans are for him, but his dad seemed to think they were bringing him up for a little while, possibly through the end of the year, but he would start next year off in Triple A. Let's face it....the Tiger bats have gone silent. Bringing up a kid like this could be a spark, but it could also backfire. I don't think there is any harm in bringing him up if they continue to work with him and coach him.

Looks completely lost out there on defense. Did do a nice job getting a hit off of Clemens.

How much better can it get for Maybin?

First hit AND first HR off of Clemens.

The ball really jumps off his bat. That is telling to me.

That kid is a babyface. I swear he delivered my newspaper last summer. It's always good to see a player that young in the Show. You could see it on his face how excited he was.

:goodposting: Even with the home run and single off of Clemens, I agree. I don't like the way he looks out in the field. Never played left in his life? He's an outfielder, play outfield.

There is no question it's his true passion. I did miss a couple innings yesterday, but I don't see the cause for concern regarding his field play. In the first game he did charge into the corner too quick and did get turned around on a linedrive, but those are things that I have seen out of major league vets who have been playing the specific position their entire careers. He'll be fine.
