Cameron Maybin called up by the Tigers (1 Viewer)

The minor league roster for the team I cut loose this year included Maybin, Justin Upton and Pie. Maybe I got out too soon. All of those guys would have been 5 bucks for the next 3 years, 15 for the 2 after that.

Maybin's arm couldn't break a pane of glass...assuming he was on line with the throw.
That's what I don't get...he's suppose to have a better arm than Granderson, but didn't show it last weekend. Then again, Granderson didn't show that he had that great of an arm either. I was at the Fri and Sun games and he looked overmatched in both which I guess is expected especially since he struck out a decent amount in the minors. You can see why he's so touted though.Granderson is fun to watch on the bases too.

I can forgive him being overmatched at the plate at this stage in his career, especially given the fact that his debut was on the hallowed grounds. That would mess me up a bit, too. But the way he played the field was disappointing to me. He just didn't look athletic out there. One would think that when the ball goes up in the air in your direction, your natural instinct would take over and you'd at least look smooth tracking a ball. He seemed to fight every ball that came his way. And I will not accept the excuse that he is a centerfielder. Ball goes up. Go get ball.

C'mon now...don't be a Philly fan. It's better than promoting the 40 year old pitcher from Erie like they were talkign about over the weekend.

Ouch, Philly fan card played on me...that smarts.
 He struck out a ton in the minors, so this performance shouldn't be too shocking. I'm still shocked by his arm (the lack of it). I'd keep in mind too that 20 is relatively young for a prospect since most of these scouts are projecting out to when he's 23-4.

Wow, does this guy have a LONG way to go before he should legitimatley be playing in the bigs. To think we could have had Alfonso Soriano straight up for last years stretch dirve. A million scouts can't be wrong, can they? He didin't even look good in CF, for Christ sake.

He almost screwed up a PR assignment yesterday...He looks like a little leaguer out there. It's getting to be like a bad car wreck that I can't look away from. Alfonso Soriano

supposedly Leyland said yesterday they are planning on having him start in AAA next year and that he just isn't ready yet.

I can live with this. But they need to stop putting him in the games right now, before he does something that will scar him for life.

Maybin is at least two years away from being a MLB player.

There is no way that Maybin should even be brought up to the bigs next season. 2009 at the very earliest

Maybin is so overmatched by everything in the game right now I don`t want him to lose his confidence..this was a huge mistake in bringing him up.

100% agreed. But now that I see him, I still would have rather had Alfonso Soriano last year, and taken my chances on signing him to la ong termer. Probably wouldn't have gone after Sheff if that was the case, but I could have lived with Soriano in my OF for the next 5 years or so.

Now that I have seen Maybin play a number of games, there is nothing he does that strikes me as special, he looks lost in the field, his arm is so..so, at the plate he looks overmatched and confused, he runs like an old man.I agree about Soriano, I would have rather had him than Sheff..although when Sheff was healthy he was having a very good year..but soriano could have played the field.

He runs like an old man? Please. Save your prospect analysis for your local little league field please.

LOL, Mickey Rivers WALKED like an old man, but ran like a deer.. maybe that's a valid comparison.

Maybin is ranked by scouting experts from every major directory as at worst the #6 prospect in all of baseball. He is extremely raw and probably shouldn't have been called up but it's also not exactly a bad thing for him. He will now realize that natural talent alone will not get it done at the major league level with few exceptions and he needs to work on his mental make-up above all else. Remember this guy was in his first year of high A ball this year and missed several games because of injury. What is encouraging is his 1.066 OPS playing at Lakeland this year which has almost the exact same dimensions as Comerica and is a notoriously hard park for hitters. He also hit righthanding pitching much better (.344/531/.966) and had an OBP of .425 vs righthanders. Maybin has faced very few lefthanders in his development so he has still even at the Single A level not fully grasped the spin and release but that will certainly come with time. He strikes out too much because he is looking for pitches to drive but at the same time his OBP at low A (.387) and at high A (.401) means he is selective when he wants to be. As far as fielding that should not be a problem after he plays at this level for a quarter of a season. He is still trying to figure out the speed of the game and for a 20 year old kid who has played a handful of games at Double A as his highest level, misplaying a few balls because of nerves and the speed of the game is quite normal. Here are a few quotes from MLB scouts on Maybin in the field:

"Major League Gold Glover right now""Best outfield defender in the FSL""One of the best defenders in the minor leagues""Incredible feel for the game, uncanny instincts""I haven't seen many better than him in center"
Over the offseason he will work with coaches to improve his path to the ball which is probably his only issue. Once that his instincts will take over and his natural ability will shine. On the bases he stole 27 and 25 the past two years in 184 games. He will be a 40 to 50 steal guy in the majors and is the fastest player on the Tigers roster. His home to third speed is by far the best I've ever seen and I think he is beyond special. At Spring Training in a relaxed atmosphere he played well and the only flaw I saw in his game was his tendency to overswing at times and his path to balls in the gap. He's 20, I'll wait for him to work out the kinks. He'll be in CF on opening day in 2009 and will be a August call-up in 2008.

My company has season tickets..I have seen Maybin run close up, I don`t just read box scores and comment like you do.Maybin has a very odd gait and looks like he is in pain while running, I did not say he was not fast..just runs like an old man.

Major League gold glover right now? These are the reports you base you opionion from? Maybin is the worst fielding outfielder on the Tigers right now. He gets a terrible jump on the ball, takes bad angles and is very timid.

I saw him at Spring Training. I'm glad your company has tickets and you get to the games. Maybe you'll pick up some baseball knowledge along the way if you go enough. I doubt it, but it's possible. :finger:

With all those games you are going to in your "company's seats" you should have seen Ryan Raburn playing in the OF. I'll have to take your opinion on Maybin though over the scouts and my own two eyes since you are at every game. Do any of the players sleep at your house?

Ryan Raburn is a nobody......also not every game..we split them. And you see how much time Maybin has got lately...Maybin mayhavebin a good fielder in the minors, but he is not even showing a glimpse of that in the show.Wow DD..you seem downright bitter today..

Bonderman is out for the year. I'm not all that happy. Maybin will be great, book it. I didn't care for your boxscore comment. We're westside boys, it's all good.

I am just telling you what I have seen with my own eyes. I wish that I could say he showed some Ken Griffey Jr. traits..I hope I am wrong. The problem is Maybin was nowhere near ready to be in the bigs, so he does look out of his element. I just don`t want the kid to lose his confidence.

I know he's young. I know he hasn't played a lot of professional ball. But has anyone seen anything from this kid that impresses? :hifive:
You mean aside from being on a MLB roster and playing at age 20?? I can't think of anything. I am wondering what your expectations are of a kid his age who has made an MLB roster. Perhaps it's the expectations that are a bit overboard??

He almost screwed up a PR assignment yesterday...He looks like a little leaguer out there. It's getting to be like a bad car wreck that I can't look away from. Alfonso Soriano :excited:
supposedly Leyland said yesterday they are planning on having him start in AAA next year and that he just isn't ready yet.
This has been the plan all along and I eluded to such earlier in this thread. He won't stay on the MLB roster. I understand that people are down on the timing of bringing him up and I agree that it was a bad time. But it's not HIS call....it's a team call and really speaks more to the talent they have on their roster and in their farm system more than anything, imo. If they had better talent, they wouldn't be bringing him up....either that or the team's management is a complete group of morons. I am not really sure which it is since I haven't followed this team very closely in recent years.

My expectation is that if he is the next Ken Griffey, Jr., he should play like Junior at age 20. Junior was smooth from day 1.JUNIOR @ 19 & 20

ETA: The Junior reference as an expectation is not mine, but the player Maybin has very often been compared too by many so called experts.

DD, I just have to disagree with you some on Maybin. He's the very definition of raw right now. He has huge holes in his swing (he's always had an absurdly high K rate in the minors for someone that's not a pure power hitter) and until that gets corrected, he'll have his problems against good pitching.

He's also only a borderline top 6 prospect right now. The top 5 in some order are Hughes, Bucholz, Bruce, Joba, and Upton with Maybin in the next lower group with Longoria, Rasmus, Price, Jones, and Kershaw. He's come down a little this year, but that has more to do with some of the other guys turning into uber-elite prospects. Out of all those guys, Maybin is the one I could see miss.

Maybin is clearly overmatched up here right now, but it certainly can't take away from his talent. He is a can't miss stud according to everything I have ever seen written about him. That hasn't changed based on a couple of weeks.

I can't believe Maybin is being judged by the few games he played up here.

Not judging career potential, just commenting on he looks in the bigs so far.Still think the Tigers should not have brought him up this season, and waited until September of next season. I saw the first couple of games he played and he looked pretty confident, now he looks like a deer in the headlights
