Trying to figure out the motivation here. Im all for gay rights, but seems like you stand to lose more customers than gain with an ad like that. Is it self serving, politically motivated, just trying to stand out?

Not to say businesses can't stand up for what they believe in, but profit is the bottom line, no?

People eating the cheapest soup in the supermarket aren't going to switch brands to more expensive soup to make a point.

so now I have to agree with the politics/ religion/ opinions of every product's CEO I buy?

no thanks.. if I like something I buy it..

The commercial doesn't bother me at all. Welcome to 2015. That's probably a good thing.

The haters and protesters make a lot of noise, but I'm betting this is actually a low risk move.

Some day,and I hope it's soon, people won't even notice such things.
I just think a soup commercial is an odd place to insert a pro-gay message. The commercial is less about the soup and more about the two gay guys who adopted a kid. If I was into canned soup, and even if I was gay, I doubt this would make me want to try Campbell's. Overall this kind of stuff is random and comical to me, but I have a weird sense of humor.

And here I thought it was trying to ride the Star Wars hype.

I saw 2 parents enjoying time with their child. Guess I missed whatever made it a commercial with a political agenda.

How many brands of soup are at the store you shop at? Besides the store brand, Cambells is the only brand I have ever noticed. Any soup recommendation's?

I also roll my eyes because an ad like this is so inherently disingenuous. Campbell's is a corporation. They have no soul, they have no official stance on social issues that anyone cares about. They sell $7b of crappy soup and tomato juice every year. Any ad they put on the air is going to be carefully researched and focus grouped to portray a certain feeling about their products. It was determined that this ad would make them appear compassionate and progressive. It's manipulative like most ads, but in a really weird and random way imo. I'm sure some people will see the commercial and think it's bold too, but it's obviously not. Would they have run this ad even ten years ago?

That's usually not the goal of ads for well known brands. It's more simply associating Campbell's with happy families.

Sure you did.

I didn't see a political agenda. I saw it and said "oh, it's a gay couple". Whatever. And it's Star Wars, so that's always good.

It's not at all a political agenda. It's an agenda to make you feel they're bold and progressive. They'd do an ad with two mean kids ramming cans of soup up a gay kid's ### if this were a homophobic society.

Can I get a link to all of the ads that are not disingenuous?

Pretty sure the agenda is to sell more soup. Possible it picks up some additional goodwill business for their other brands. Just a hunch.

Teh gayz grocery shop, too, on occasions when on their way home from fabulous gallery openings and the coop is closed.

Sure, they all are, but this one is unique because it's subtly co-opting what was until recently an extremely divisive issue. But clearly we're past the stage where this would hurt their bottom line, and they know it. You know there are people out there applauding the ad because of what they think it represents.

Sure but all advertising is designed to fool or mislead people. I get what you're saying but at least in this case the agenda is progressive. It's better than BP or whoever trying to convince us they give a #### about oil covered ducks.

Lol, why is it always a gay white dude? I want to see two flaming black dudes on TV before I believe there isn't an agenda here.

Right. And this is one in a whole series of happy family ads. Many of them feature straight couples, but not all of them. Kinda like the real world.

Not all ads are designed to spin, lie or fool people. There's simple brand awareness ads, straight sales pitch ads, humorous ads and informative ads.
