Can You Believe This new NFL Rule....? (1 Viewer)

SEA lines up for like a 39 yard FG on 4th down.

They miss the FG.

They also hold on the play.

The new rule in place this year not only gives the ball to DEN but the 10 yard penalty was assessed.

Holmgren called a TO to make sure that this was correct. Al Michaels later explained that it is a new rule in place this year.

I have been reffing football since 1992, I cannot believe they actually put this rule in place. Sometimes I think the NFL may overthink some of their rules.

DEN actually declined the penalty, but it was still enforced and they got the ball at like their own 49. Had they accepted the penalty, SEA would have been able to try another FG (long) or punted.

So basically if you hold on a 4th down FG, you are screwed no matter what. If you make it, you have to go back 10 and do it again. If you miss you are really ******.

This rule makes no sense.

Agree that rule is stinky. It's akin to the offense getting called for holding while also giving up a sack. You don't get the sack AND the holding. New Rule=silliness

I agree its a moronic rule. But are you sure they declined the penalty? I thought they accepted the penalty but the FG miss still counts, which is still stupid but makes more sense than enforcing a declined penalty.

I agree that it's a pretty stupid rule. It's a double whammy on the kicking team. The NFL has really gotten ahead of themselves on the new rules. I hope this trend doesn't continue.

The rule may be in place to keep the kicking team from performing a quick, obvious hold in the event of a shanked kick. Otherwise, I dunno.

If they shank the kick then just decline the penalty. On 4th down and the team goes for it and there is a holding call can the team accept the penalty and still get the ball plus ten or is it minus 10 and a repeat 4th down? Stupid rule!
