Only five linebackers participated in Tuesday's voluntary practice, and Green is worried about the lack of depth.

"We got to get some more guys," Green said.

Starting outside linebacker Karlos Dansby didn't practice because of a hamstring strain. Middle linebacker Gerald Hayes, expected to be the starter, isn't practicing after missing all of last year with a knee injury.

The Cardinals drafted Louisville outside linebacker Brandon Johnson in the fifth round and figure to add a rookie free agent or two.

Unlike many teams, the Cardinals have yet to release their list of rookie free agents.

All of the Cardinals veterans are participating in the voluntary camp.

HAYES’ LONG ROAD BACK

When starting middle linebacker Gerald Hayes underwent surgery last year to repair what was thought to be a meniscus tear of his left knee, the operation wasn’t so simple.

Hayes said doctors also found a partial tear of his anterior cruciate ligament. He still doesn’t know if the ACL tear was already there or if he suffered it at the same time as the meniscus injury, against Dallas in the preseason.

Hayes said he may take the entire offseason to rehab, aiming for a return at the beginning of training camp. James Darling currently is the starter in the middle.

“Right now, it's all about getting back healthy,” Hayes said, hesitant to talk about possibly earning a starting job again.

There will be an adjustment in the Cardinals’ depth chart at linebacker. Outside linebacker Darryl Blackstock, a third-round pick last year, will move from the strong to the weak side, where he will compete with Orlando Huff for the starting job. Karlos Dansby remains the strong side linebacker. James Darling will continue to play the middle for now because Gerald Hayes is still rehabilitating a knee injury. "They have to really step up and play," Green said of Blackstock and Huff. "Otherwise, James Darling will go there and beat them both out."

Might be a complete non-factor, but what's up with Mark Brown? He filled in pretty well last year for Barton, and signed with Arizona.

I doubt he's worth much, but looking over one of my rosters, I saw he moved. Is he worth anything?

I watched a couple Louisville games last year, but I didn't pay attention to the defense. I've been reading very contradictory opinions of Johnson. I'm starting to believe the people who think Denny found a diamond in the rough have this guy right. I referred to his online highlights and came away unimpressed with his tackling, especially his technique. But you can't help but notice the great athleticism. Anybody think he has a shot to make an impact as a rookie? Later? Seems like a good situation.
