Carlos Gonzalez, OF, Rockies (1 Viewer)

Looks like he played in the majors with the A's briefly last year and was part of the Huston Street deal in the office season. Seems to have decent power (nothing like playing in CO) and has swiped some bases as well. He is 23/24 I think and I am wondering if he projects as 20/20 kind of player.

Anyone have any thoughts?

Stud may be pushing it a bit for now. Gonzalez is still young and has shown better plate discipline this year at both the AAA and MLB levels. Coors Field will help his stats. He has a lot more fantasy value in Colorado than he would have in Oakland but I view him as a OF3/OF4 kind of guy. Plus speed but average power and AVG. He'll score runs in he bats regularly at the top of the order.

I bet Billy Beane wishes he could take a mulligan on that one.

I think Brett Wallace is pretty good compensation actually

Time will tell, but over the short term it's gotta be a loss for Moneyball. Both the Rockies and Cardinals are ahead for now, and probably even the D-backs if you go back to the Haren deal which also involved Gonzalez.Beane dealt Huston Street at the absolute low point of his value and wasn't able to achieve either of his two objectives with Holliday: Holliday didn't help lift the A's into contention during the first half and Beane wasn't able to flip him easily for a quick return. Holliday's trade value wasn't as low as Street's but he was forced to deal during a down market. Beane could have done a lot worse (see Rios, Alexis). Wallace is a good hitting prospect albeit one without a defensive position. I'm a Giants fan but I don't have any ill will towards the Oaklands. I hope they stay in the area and hope Wallace is a part of the club for a while. In many ways, the A's are a franchise to admire but they're a hard team to love because their players are always leaving town.

Thanks for the information guys. I added him in a dynasty keeper the other day and have been pleasantly surprised.

When Carlos Gonzalez first came up with the A's I was impressed with his throwing arm and the way the ball seemed to explode off his bat. I think his first five hits were doubles. He looked like a young Luis Gonzalez (the one that hit 57 homers in 2001). Tall, lefty hitter, strong, smooth uppercut swing. As the 2008 season wore on however he went straight downhill. He was worthless after his first time around the league and finished with an 81/13 K/W ratio, .242 with 4 homers in 302 ABs. True, he was only 22, but with strikeouts more than 25% of the time and walks less than 5% of the time, he didn't seem to have much command of the strike zone and was really dominated by AL pitchers. Even though he has hit well in the last week, 6 homers in the last 8 games (against Pit, WAS, and Fla) he is still strking out 25% of the time. He's got his walks up, nearer to 10%. He may well become a decent outfielder and is certainly worth stashing away, but I think most A's fans agreed with Beane's decision to cut losses on him and flip him when they did.

the rockies have an interesting dilemma next year. with gonzalez in LF, fowler in CF and young at 2B, that's a ton of speed. but not a lot of power. probably too much speed and not enough power for 37.5 percent of your lineup. keeping barmes at 2B over young gives you added power. so that leaves 3 OFers for 2 spots. which is OK, but it begs the question: is one of them destined to be a 4th OF in colorado? and if so, who gets hurt the most long-term?

Is Young out of options? If not, I can easily see him opening in the minors next year as a "first callup" kind of guy.

Young has to have options remaining. He just made his MLB debut

ok, so the dilemma may not be next year. maybe its in 2 years ... or 3. but young is 24. so he's not a kid. you want him up at some point very soon.
