Carolina Panthers unveil new logo for 2012 (1 Viewer)

I wanted to see a Panther standing on his hind legs, a broken-necked buccaneer between it's paws, a dead falcon in it's mouth, and whizzinating on a Saints logo.

They should have just rolled out the new helmets next year and seen how long it would take for someone to notice the change. My guess would be Week 5.

I don't think the old logo was out dated. I liked it, as someone above said, they have (had) one of the best logos in football. That being said, though slight, I think the new logo is an improvement. It makes sense for them to keep it close since the old logo was pretty good to begin with.

As far as I know, the jerseys are changing this season as well (as they are also going to nike), so I don't think this is a money making move. I think this is kinda a symbol of a new era in Panthers football. New coaching, new QB, new winning style in 2012. New Jerseys and Logo..

They need to get rid of that script. It reminds me of something you would see on a Starter hat from 1993.

Why were we so crazy for teal in the 90s with our expansion team colors?

San Jose Sharks

Anaheim Ducks

Florida Marlins

Panthers

Jacksonville Jaguars

Vancouver Grizzlies

AZ Diamondbacks

Who'd I miss?

That trend is back in...You havent notices the resurgence of all the old school jackets?Ugly as hell.
Agreed on the text, looks terrible. I like the new logo, althought I didn't dislike the old one. I just think the old text was much better. The new text looks like someone who just found a new font on Word and thinks it looks good.

Maybe that will be in a upcoming Carolina Panther's illustrated children's book. I like the small changes to the Panther, but I prefer the old text.

The Detroit Pistons did it in the NBA. :X 1996-2001I was so relieved to see them go back to something that at least resembles the bad boy era Pistons. 2005-Present

ETA: I just noticed that you were talking about expansion teams but still I could not pass this post without mentioning the puke that the Pistons put on all of their #### for those handful of years.

They should've just put Cam Newtons face on their helmets. Although that's a really bad idea... They'd get flagged by the refs on every play for roughing the QB. :P

Yep, I'm a Pistons fan too and considered putting them on the list. What a horrible era in Piston hoops. No wonder Grant Hill wanted out.

That graphic designer was a ####### genius. He probably cashed the checks right away, partied in vegas for a few weeks then after his hangover realized he had 3 hours to present. He Whips this up in photoshop by distorting the old logo and adds some crappy font and bam. New Logo!
Was thinking more along the lines of "Jerry Richardson let his nephew do the rebrand."He's supposed to be super cheap, right? :)

Another plausible theory. Also, is the new panther giving the people's eyebrow?

Panthers Eyebrow

People's Eyebrow

Super Cheap? The dude spends money like a drunken sailor.

I guess I think the new logo looks slightly better than the old one.

But I'm not getting all the love for the Panthers logo in this thread. There's nothing special about it, nor anything special about the uniforms.

Definitely NOT one of the "best in the league".

Common misconception because he refused to spend money two seasons ago because of the pending lockout. Other than that season, Richardson has never been tight, and is fully willing to spend money. The Panthers are always right up against the cap.

Actually, as funny as this is, it's not far from the truth in the industry. I've had plenty of "hey I need this in 3 hours" type of jobs. Here is my professional opinion (20 years in graphic design):

Now in this case, though the new design changes may look subtle, they really aren't. The new logo is significantly streamlined and is much cleaner looking. The eyes are more prominent, the whiskers are less pronounced and the teeth are more menacing. Removing the black outline around the logo also give the logo the appearance of jumping off the page. The black outline is more of a cartoon element. So it was smart to eliminate it. The head is also more rounded and approaches a more realistic look. Overall, I like they revision.

As for the text, that old font screams glam pop metal. Fonts are very susceptible to becoming part of a time or culture. In this case, the new font is more contemporary and will have more potential to look a little more timeless as the logo ages. Many corporations spend a lot of time and energy to find a font that will not only be associated with their company, but will be timeless. You don't want to be continually revising your fonts. So in this case, I really like what they have done.

Now, should they have done a complete redesign, I don't think so? Why? Because the old logo is now very established and a complete redesign would have potentially alienated the fanbase. You don't want to lose out on those merchandising dollars. Only in some rare cases should an established team's logo be completely redone from scratch. The Buccaneers logo is a perfect example of a complete redesign. That old swashbuckler had to go. Not just because it was bad, but it was associated with a losing team. They new logo was a step in the direction a team wanting to disassociate itself with the past. I don't think the Panthers fit that description, thus the cleaning up of the old logo.
