Case Study in Stud WR theory (1 Viewer)

Footballguy
Just finished drafting a re-draft 12 team, PPR team. Our starting line up is 1 QB; 2 RB; 2 WR; WR/RB FLex; TE; D: K and we have 18 total spots on our roster

I got very lucky too that someone decided to pick Steven Jackson with the 6th pick and then Frank Gore went at 7, leaving me with Andre Johnson at 1.08. I decided then to go with 2 WRs with my first 2 picks; but then Marquest Colston was available in the 4th and I had to take him. Hence, I went with 3 out of my top 4 picks at WR.....and here is what I landed up with. I felt it would be interesting to discuss this here since we talk about the stud WR theory quite a bit.

My draft went like this:

1.08 Andre Johnson

2.05 Reggie Wayne

3.08 Jamaal Charles

4.05 Marques Colston

5.08 Knowshon Moreno

6.05 Jay Cutler

7.08 Clinton Portis

8.05 Caddy Williams

9.08 Matt Ryan QB Falcons

10.05 Big Ben QB Steelers

11.08 Heath Miller TE Steelers

12.05 Greg Olsen TE Chicago

13.08 Chicago Bears D

14.05 Demaryus Thomas WR Broncos

15.08 Chris Chambers WR Chiefs

16.05 Indy D

17.08 Adam Vinateiri

QB: Jay Cutler; Big Ben; Matt Ryan

RB: Knowshon Moreno; Jamaal Charles; Clinton Portis; Caddy Williams

WR: Andre Johnson; Reggie Wayne; Marques Colston; Chris Chambers; Demaryus Thomas

TE: Heath Miller; Greg Olsen

D: Chi; Indy

K: Adam Vinateiri

===========================

Some key notes:

- I had decided to go with WR with my first pick, thinking I would go Randy Moss. But when Andre fell, I had to go for him.

- Going into the draft, I had decided that if I do not pick a QB early, I would target Cutler and then surround him with QBs that let me pick match ups. I believe I have accomplished this with Big Ben and Matt Ryan

- I was targetting Jamaal Charles in the 3rd round going into the draft. He was going to be my home run swing

- I was targetting Clinton Portis later in the draft.... I just think there is too much value to not go after him in the 7th or later rounds. Since my RB situation was shaky, I might have reached in the 7th, but I know a couple of folks in my league love Clinton and I did not want to let him hang around too much after the 7th.

- I had decided to go later with 2 TEs rather than go for a Gates or Vernon Davis or Dallas Clark early. I was the last to pick a starting TE, but getting both Greg Olsen and Heath Miller thrills me to no end. With Santonio Holmes gone, Heath Miller will be targetted a lot this year by the Steelers IMO.

- I had targetted the Bears D going into the draft since we get pretty good points for D performance. Adding Urlacher and Peppers is going to make this Bears D pretty good this year IMO.

Finally, I was shocked to see Marques Colston in the 4th round staring at me. While my initial plan was to go after a RB in the 4th (either Knowshon or Stewart or Forte), seeing Colston as my 3rd WR to go with Andre and Reggie Wayne was too difficult to pass up on in a PPR league. Now, I have 3 WRs, each of which have had a 100 catch season in the last 3 years, and each of which has 10 to 12 TD capability in them every year.

I know the RB situation is shaky and I am hoping Knowshon gets healthy soon. But with my WRs, I do not need a lot from my RBs week to week IMO.

Thoughts?????

Think you could of gone RB instead of Cutler in the 6th. Ryan would hold up well until Big Ben could rotate in.
I understand what you are saying. But the way the draft went, there were 2 more teams without a QB when I picked Cutler, and they were both going to have 2 choices to pick a QB before I got a pick again. And I did not want to go with Kolb/Flacco/Ryan as a starter. Ryan just does not impress me as a consistent starter. I plan to use him for spot starts against the weaker pass Ds.

Which backs were available around your 2.05 pick? Similarly, which WRs were available around 5.08?

I wonder how much stronger this team could have been had you been able to pair Charles with an RB with solid upside like Ryan Grant or Shonn Green in the 2nd, and then come the 5th, potentially had a stable of AJ, Colston and someone like Hines Ward, Percy Harvin, or TO -- potentially an mid-upper tier TE like Clark, Vernon Davis or Witten.

It's hard to judge this team wihtout knowing more about how these mid-rounds were developing, and how well you were able to let the draft come to you.

Unfortunately, Ryan Grant went in round 1 and Shonn Greene was the 1st pick of the 2nd round. See round by round draft picks below to help....Larry Fitz lasted until the top of the 3rd round if you can believe it. People are really scared of Leinart.... my picks are bolded below: Round 1

I now have the 8th pick in 2 drafts and the 10th in another. I am going to see who falls but I will likely go WR/WR as well.

Did you need Ryan then if you had Cutler?

I assume you can trade players right? You have 3 QB's and someone may need one.

I like the team and the strategy alot.

Moreno and Charles are good backs.

Liked your draft up until the Portis/Caddy selections. I understand you needed some depth but I have these guys at Jamal Lewis/Julius Jones production. That makes them nonstarters in my eyes.

True; but these 2 are backs with the most upside, given they can both perform like RB 2 easily. Caddy showed he can get 1000 6+ TDs last year....not bad for a RB4 who can spot start during byes/insurance against injuries. Do you really equate Portis to a Julius Jones?

One more note - I wanted to take Jermichael Finley in the 6th but when he & Gonzo went a few picks before mine, I went ahead with Cutler because there was no point spending a pick there on a Cooley or Zach Miller or Carlson etc....considering I got Heath and Greg Olsen so late. Cutler has upside given his past production and Martz.

With players such as Thomas Jones going in round 4, no wonder Colston was available to you in the 4th.
That had me shocked too. But this guy has drafted Jones the last 3 years and been very successful so it is not surprising that he is hitching his wagon on Jones again.

I like this strategy a lot this year. I also like waiting on a QB until round 7 or so. You should be happy with your team based on your league. Your "set" of WR's are unmatched with Andre, Wayne and Colston as starters. Moreno in round 5 is good value I think. Did you consider Bradshaw in round 6? Or was your strategy to get your QB by then? I think people don't realize that you can get two QB's very late this year (Rounds 7-10) and have a great QBBC.

I always look to wr/wr in ppr if I am in the 8 - 12 range. Any running back you get in that area is a question mark, as from year to year, it seems like all coaches go with the hot hand at that position. With AJ/Wayne, really the only way you are going to bust is if they get injured. Same goes with other uber studs like RWhite, Marshall, Austin, etc. The running back you ended up getting, in my opinion, is just as much of a tossup as the guys drafted in the 3rd/4th/5th range. I mean, is it that much of a stretch to think that Charlles or Portis is going to be better than Mendenhall or Ryan Grant? Who knows?

In ppr, elite wrs are great to have because there is usually consistant week to week targets and production, a lot of the guys picked in the later rounds end up with nice overall stats, but will blow up for about three weeks and be pedestrian most other weeks. As far as your team goes, it looks pretty solid as long as you hit on one of those qbs being in the top 5.

I have the same kind of reasoning when I get "stuck" with the 8th pick. I was fortunate to even get Andre Johnson. I think for the QB position, I will just play match ups. All 3 of these QBs have the talent to go for a 250 yard 2+ TD game on any given day/night. The match up will dictate those chances more. Chicago does get to play Det twice & Minny and GB are not really stellar in their pass Ds; Falcons get the Bucs and Saints twice; Steelers get the Browns and Baltimore that already lost it's best CB for the year and traditionally Ben has big days against them.

Had Andre Johnson not made it in 1.08 would you have gone with R.Moss?
That was my plan. I just do not trust Marshall's QB situation as much and while Reggie Wayne is as steady as they come, his upside is limited compared to Moss who can go for 15+ TDs and win you the league on his own, as we have seen in the past. Brady should be more effective this year, being one more year removed from surgery and the TE additions will help take some coverage off Moss. Finally, I think the Revis situation helps a lot too .... if Revis holds out, I like Moss's schedule much more.

This is the first draft I've seen this year where AJ fell to 8. Not gonna happen in 99% of leagues. I like going WR-WR this year, but really don't like your RB selections. Not crazy about Wayne either.

So you wen with 3 QBs in a 5 round span

Why on Earth would you do that  Waste of a pick fo sure, could've added another RB or WR rather than watch 2 QBs sit on the bench all year...not to mention the fact that your crystal ball better be in top form trying to figure out who to start each week.

I like the early part of the draft but think you bombed those middle rounds by "wasting" a pick...

BOL :lmao:

I totally agree on all of that. I'm targeting Moss at #9 and hoping for Austin in the 2nd. I will pass on Wayne and Marshall. If Moss is gone that means Rodgers or Brees might fall there but I think Brady or Romo is the wiser play in the 3rd/4th/5th depending on other variables.

On another note I think this year we see Calvin Johnson outperform pretty much every WR except maybe A.J.

I'm not touching Wayne at all...too many weapons in INdy with Gonzo coming back, Garcon stepping up and huge red zone target in Dallas Clark...

Reggie Wayne was the 25th ranked WR in weeks 11-16  ...averaging a mediocre 12.4 ppg and a whole 6.3 pts in Championship week

While he still think he will put up solid numbers, I don't think we'll see those electric years that warrant that high 2nd round pick...I'll gladly watch somebody select him based on his past and his QB while I target guys like Marshall, CJ (if available), Austin + White who have far more upside.

I don't know, I think you are pretty weak at RB, which would have been significantly improved by taking Bradshaw instead of Cutler. I also would not have taken Wayne over White; receiver by committee vs. primary target.

Then don't take him. Who the hell burns a pick on a QB in the 8th planning to spot start them? This is not what QBBC is. QBBC is drafting two guys hoping that at least one of them will emerge. Burning a pick on someone to use them for spot starts is terrible...nevermind taking another QB in the next round.

I think the "Rate my Team" messages that get shoe horned into the Shark Pool get more and more creative every year.

My comments are reserved for the Assistant Coaches forum.

I'd be very annoyed at how quickly rbs are flying off the board. A lot of backs going a full round plus higher than their ADP. You are pretty much forced to go with another position in the 4th in spite of the fact that you really need a rb. That said, given that you are already strong at wr, I might look for a top TE over WR. The value isn't as great, but I have a hard time justifying a third receiver when rb2, TE, and QB have all yet to be addressed. I don't like the Cutler pick. I'd have gone Felix/Spiller/or Forsett there and Eli/Palmer/Flacco later. Being a Bears fan may have you overvaluing him...though he does have a great deal of potential in the Martz offense. I don't think you made any huge mistakes...you adjusted on the fly with how quickly rbs were going and didn't panic into taking a rb at a terrible value. Of course, this is just my opinion. Moreno/Portis/Caddy all have potential, so if one of those 3 winds up as a 1200 yard 10 td rb (or you can mix and match effectively) then you are in decent shape. If Cutler puts up top 5 qb numbers as well, you should have a very good season.

I found the RB value terrible too in the 4th round, and was going to take Knowshon Moreno in the 4th. But with Colston falling (never expected him there in that position), I had to adjust. I still got Moreno in the 5th so did not lose much in terms of RBs.As for the Cutler pick, I really wanted to go for the Martz upside, not to mention being a Bears fan, I had some personal reason to get him. After looking at the schedules for Cutler and Matt Ryan actually, I am loving this QBBC that I have with Big Ben as depth. I checked the schedules and I do get a lot of good match ups in terms of Det; Seattle; Minny; NO etc

While I understand that White and even Marshall and Austin can provide higher ceilings, I like the security I get with Wayne. Like someone else mentioned, unless they get injured, there is no doubt I will have 3 WRs that will all get at least 1000 yards, 80 catches and around 10 TDs. That kind of consistent production at the WR position is tough to get with 3 WRs. Now, all these 3 WRs have had a 100 catch season in the past, so the upside exists with each one of them.
