Chad Henne #2 or #1 in Miami (1 Viewer)

Pennington is not a lock to start in Miami and Henne seems to have convinced Sparano that he may be something quite special.

Against Jacksonville on the road last Saturday, Henne completed 17-of-26 passes for 133 yards and had a 43-yard bomb to Ted Ginn, Jr. ruled incomplete after Ginn slightly bobbled the ball on his way out of bounds. He was not sacked and did not commit a turnover for the second straight week, while commanding respect in the huddle and on the sideline, and first-year Head Coach Tony Sparano definitely has taken notice.

"I think he's developed a bunch since the start of rookie camp," Sparano said. "What I think that he's done well is all the sudden the game's starting to slow down. He's playing a little bit more comfortable in the pocket. He's starting to see the field a little bit clearer. He's making some faster decisions out there in some critical situations. This guy's really shown me great poise, he really has. He's been in some tough situations out there.

"When you're in preseason and you're mixing and matching lines and you're doing some of those things, he's been in some tough situations and I think he's handled it pretty well. He's probably made the most heads-up plays at that position right now. Now that being said, he's played the most, so those things have come about a little bit more. But he has made some heads-up plays no different than the last play of the first half the other night."
Henne's arm strength has never been called into question, and so far almost a month into training camp and the preseason the zip he has shown in his passes have quelled any doubt as to whether or not the shoulder he injured last year still bothers him. While Sparano was reluctant to reveal who his starting quarterback will be, he did not shy away from including Henne in the discussion when it comes to No. 1 or No. 2.

Interesting. I didn't expect noodle arm to be that good anyway, so Henne taking it would be pretty interesting.

For Henne's sake I hope they don't look at him until at least December.
 they could really screw this up by playing him too soon. Pennington can hold down the fort for a year.
I would let Chad start, but move to Henne after he sees a little bit more of real game action. Further he should be pegged at #2 as the others should not be part of the equation. I was impressed at his forced rollout in the 1st half where he threw a strike to a coming back receiver (I think it was Hagan). He appears that he could be a QB in the realm of Trent Edwards or Campbell at the least...and that would be better than we have had.

Misleading topic title. :o

The article just says he's "in the discussion" for #1 or #2, not that he will be #1 or #2.

Henne

Beck & McCown are both on Ebay

Henne does look good so far. I hope he sits the 1st year though and starts in 2009. I can't root for Chad Pennington. I just can't. Maybe if he beats the Jets Week 1 I'll reconsider.

I don't think they hired Pennington to be a backup to start. It's clear that Henne has impressed his coaches but Parcells likes to do things the old fashioned way and in this case, that's start the veteran to begin with and bring the young guy along.

No disrespect to Miami fans, although they have every right to expect some improvement from last year to this, it's highly unlikely that they make the playoffs this year. I expect Pennington to play for awhile and then they'll bring in Henne later in the season.

:towelwave: I doubt Henne starts more than 4 games this year, without injury to Penny. In 2009, the Henne era begins. He probably won't be an elite QB, but he could easily be among the Schaub/Eli/Hasselbeck variety - low end QB1, top backup, or QBBC cog.

Any way you look at it, this is good news for Henne. Rebuilding team with a hand-picked QB that thus far has been impressing. This is more of a dynasty note than anything, but in a startup league, I would probably take him over Flacco, for instance.

Definitely a guy to keep an eye on.

Is there a difference in this case?
I believe so. I read the comment to mean he's in the discussion to be one of the top two QBs ("in the discussion" for #1 or #2), not necessarily that he's in the discussion to be the #1. More interesting to me is that Beck is close to getting cut. He was a second round pick last year, after the Dolphins passed on Quinn in round 1. That decision doesn't look too good now, I guess unless you believe Ginn will be the next great WR, which I don't.

I think people in Miami will be very happy with what they get from Henne. He took over at UM as a freshman and did nothing but deliver for 4 straight years. If he hadn't been injured his entire senior year, Henne would have been a much higher pick. He's got good size at 6-2 and a cannon arm. The biggest thing IMO is that Henne put up his best numbers in the toughest games:

In 07 vs Ore, OSU, MSU, Wisc, Ill, and Fla: 814 yards, 10 TDs 5 ints (was injured against Oregon and was not 100% until the bowl game)

In 06 vs. USC, OSU, MSU, and ND: 936 yards, 10 tds, 2 ints

In 05 vs. ND, MSU, OSU,PSU and Nebraska: 1184 yards, 10 tds, 3 ints

In 05 vs. ND, MSU, OSU, TEX: 1068 yards, 11 tds, 3 ints

I don't expect Henne to be starting this year unless there is mad injuries. There are plenty of QB's to back up Pennington. Miami knows they are not going to make the playoffs and are a team that is a couple years from even making the playoffs but are really trying to rebuild. This takes time and I think Henne is the long term answer for the team and Parcell's and Sparano know this. Development is key here.

BTW, anyone that can have two rotator cuff tears and can still play/start in the NFL is OK in my book! Its a true test as to how good an athlete he is. Calling Pennington noodle arm is just disrespectful, IMO, but then again, what do I know... I only work with people with rotator cuff tears everyday. :coffee:

The biggest thing Henne needs to work on is not staring down the guy he's going to throw to, if he starts week 1 I see this becoming a big problem.

 I would say that Henne doesn't play for at least the first 8 games. And I agree with the guy above, it would be better for Henne in the long run if he just held the clipboard for a full season...And I own the guy in two leagues and would rather see him ride the pine this entire season. Dynasty leagues obviosuly...

Looks like Henne will be #2, who's the odd man out here? Beck and McCown are both still in camp, right?

Best guess on when Henne takes over this season? I'd say around week 10.

Im guessing McCown is the odd man out.McCown makes more $ than Beck so I think that for the #3 spot, they'll look for someone who has alot of upside, rather than the other way around.
