Pennington is not a lock to start in Miami and Henne seems to have convinced Sparano that he may be something quite special.
Against Jacksonville on the road last Saturday, Henne completed 17-of-26 passes for 133 yards and had a 43-yard bomb to Ted Ginn, Jr. ruled incomplete after Ginn slightly bobbled the ball on his way out of bounds. He was not sacked and did not commit a turnover for the second straight week, while commanding respect in the huddle and on the sideline, and first-year Head Coach Tony Sparano definitely has taken notice.
"I think he's developed a bunch since the start of rookie camp," Sparano said. "What I think that he's done well is all the sudden the game's starting to slow down. He's playing a little bit more comfortable in the pocket. He's starting to see the field a little bit clearer. He's making some faster decisions out there in some critical situations. This guy's really shown me great poise, he really has. He's been in some tough situations out there.
"When you're in preseason and you're mixing and matching lines and you're doing some of those things, he's been in some tough situations and I think he's handled it pretty well. He's probably made the most heads-up plays at that position right now. Now that being said, he's played the most, so those things have come about a little bit more. But he has made some heads-up plays no different than the last play of the first half the other night."
Sparano press conferenceHenne's arm strength has never been called into question, and so far almost a month into training camp and the preseason the zip he has shown in his passes have quelled any doubt as to whether or not the shoulder he injured last year still bothers him. While Sparano was reluctant to reveal who his starting quarterback will be, he did not shy away from including Henne in the discussion when it comes to No. 1 or No. 2.
