Chad to Dallas for Barber? (1 Viewer)

that would make the choice of Felix Jones over Mendenhall silly. I don't believe it for a second. Also TO and CJ together? nope
why would it make the selection of Felix silly? Dallas thinks he's a better RB, otherwise they wouldn't have taken him over Mend.
Thats not true. Rumor was that the Cowboys chose Felix Jones over Mendenhall because Jones knows how to work in a 2 back rotation where Mendenhall was the main guy at Illinois and was used to a lot of carries.

iow, it was already a silly choice.

Wouldn't this move then say that maybe those rumors were false?

While true, how many years did Mendy perform at a high level? Maybe the Cowboys will sign Alexander and have an all-pro team from 2005.

Rumor this rumor that, we don't know what Jerry was thinking. There is just as good of a chance they would have taken Felix above Mendy regardless of who they had on their roster.I know what your saying about the 2 back thing, but that was speculation by people on the outside, i haven't heard anything directly from anyone on the inside that they would have taken Mendenhall had they not had Barber.

Completely unsubstantiated, why bother.

Then again, I will say this thought had crossed my mind this week, but I just can't see it.

On the other hand, this is one of those few cases that, "this is so crazy, it might just make sense".

A year ago, it was "Randy Moss to the Patriots? No way!"

I just don't think so. Too much risk in having no proven RB for Dallas.

I'll have my ear out for this one.

Where did you hear/see this rumor? You do know that Mendenhall was the primary back for the grand total of one year. Prior to that he provided a few breathers for Pierre Thomas.

i have heard guys( can not remember who it was) on NFL radio say that Dallas does not think Jones is a #1 RB. more of a change of pace/give Barber a break RB.

Actually, from watching during the draft they (I belive I was watching NFL.com at the time) had Jerry Jones on and he explained why they took Jones instead of Mendenhall and he said it *was* because Jones had been in the RBBC and was used to the role *and* that he was a better complement (from a "thunder and lightning" perspective) than Mendenhall.

Yeah, it was NFLN, I saw it too. I thought it was pretty obvious that they took Jones to be a compliment to Barber, which Mendenhall would not be.

Sounds like somebody inside Big D headquarters leaked this to "motivate" Marion Barber into signing a contract extension.

"Ink the deal or we may send you to the Bengals!"

Choice makes this somewhat plausible.I don't much like the guy, but he is a physical runner and could pair well with Felix. There's no way JJ could have known Choice would be a Cowboy when they took Felix.

No, but he does now.

Dallas is looking to win now and going into the year with two rookie RBs (and not much else in the backfield) has way too much room for error.

uh, yeah. That's my point. Two rookie RBs is a slight concern, but Alexander is out there and I suspect he'd like a chance at a Super Bowl.

Funny that the link in the original post has another link to the "rumor." It being just a one line post on a messageboard.

But just for the fun of it:

Chad would cost Barber + quite a bit more. Unlike fantasy football, real RBs have little trade value usually.

I've heard Dallas isn't really interested in Chad because they don't think he'd fit well with TO... I think it was Clayton or Mort who reported that a couple of days ago.

I would guess that Romo throwing to Ocho Cinco, TO and Witten would make just about any RB look like an all-star, rookie or not.
Two rookie RBs with nothing behind them is an accident waiting to happen. If they don't pan out or there's an injury or two than you're beyond one-dimensional. Even though that one-dimension will be very good you're playing with fire.

If Dallas did the deal there is still veteran RB's available like Shawn Alexander, Kevin Jones to name a couple. With that being said I give this a 7% chance of happening.

On first glance it seems somewhat plausible but the cap hit for CJ + a contract for Barber would probably make it unworkable.

Not to mention the fact that you prolly don't want college RBs to be pass protecting your franchise QB on 3rd and 14 after they just got stuffed twice in a row.

By no means am i saying the situation would be ideal, however, you can always add to the present situation. There are always free agents that can be added. Gb seemed a bit thin at reliable backs going into last season, and it seemed to work out ok for them. I will go out on a limb and say Favre is perhaps better than Romo, but TO, Ocho Cinco, Crayton and Witten would be a step up from Jennings, Jones, Driver and Lee.

Now that makes more sense than the deal being possible.

:P I'd sign an extension then too! Anything to keep myself away from playing football in Cincinnati!

They had them rated equally as RB prospects per Jerry Jones. They felt that the deciding factor was that Jones was a better team player, and had many of the abilities Barber lacked, whereas Mendenhall was the same back Barber is.Wade Phillips has said Jones reminds him of Thurman Thomas, and felt he could be a 20-carry, game changing RB.

With Choice in the fold as well, and Barber's negotiations not going well, Barber is easily tradable.

better rumor: CJ and G, S Andrews to Philly for 09 and 10 #1's and DeJax
Please translate
Chad Johnson for Guard Shawn Andrews of Philly and first round picks in 2009/2010.Hope that helps.
I actually think this is what was meant:Philly gets:WR Chad JohnsonG Stacy AndrewsCincy gets:DeShaun Jackson2009 1st Round Pick2010 1st Round PickCould be wrong though.
yeah, theres no way Philly dishes out Andrews AND Jackson AND a first in 09 AND a first in '10 for Chad Johnson. If so I will stop watching and move out of Philadelphia.

This would be a brilliant move for the Cowboys.

I think Barber benefited way too much from Owens, Witten and splitting carries with Jones. I dont believe that Barber is as good of a runningback as everyone is projecting. Chad would spread the field even more for a rookie running back or anyone else.

If they want a veteran presence - There are several free agent veteran RB options as have already been stated. But I would probably go after Lamont Jordan from the Raiders who I think would be easy to obtain or will most likely be a free agent by June

I agree Barber definitely benefits from the offense, but only as much as any RB would. And just a note about Owens etc, most of Barbers carries came out of a 2TE set.Still, his YPC definitely benefitted from running more in the 4th quarter against beat up defenses, while he was still fresh. Only 34 of his 204 carries last season were in the first quarter, but he still had a respectable 4.4 YPC. 79 of his carries came in the 4th, where he had a 5.1 YPC. He also benefitted greatly when the Cowboys were ahead, with a 5.4 YPC, whereas when they were behind he had a 3.6 YPC.It will also be interesting to see how he handles being the "inside runner" instead of Jones. Most of his carries have been outside runs. His YPC on inside runs is obviously lower, but still not bad.Incidentally, his YPC over the last half of the season was 4.2, much lower than the first half when he was getting fewer carries and had a 5.8 YPC.As he will be getting more carries earlier in the game now, I can see his overall YPC slipping back quite a bit, probably down to the 4.2-4.4 range, which is still good, but he will probably disappoint a few owners with unrealistic expectations.

haha dallas would turn into one huge fiasco. If this goes through id love to be a fly on the locker room wall... there is absolutely positively no way this trade goes through. CJ can't handle housh getting more balls then him. Not only that, can you imagine pacman, TO, CJ on one team???.. Dallas better start hiring babysitters on that coaching staff.

The Cowboys infatuation with Ocho Stinko is crazy. No QB could handle a huddle with TO and Ocho crying after every play about not getting the ball. TO's antics wore down one of the most hard-core NFL coaches ever in Parcells. Now throw Stinko into the mix?

Someone needs to explain to JJ that the book "The Bronx Zoo" was supposed to be a comedy, not a blueprint.

Guys can we let this go? No way this trade happens. That being said, I am sure if Ocho did come to a good organization like the Cowboys he would be just fine.

I can't remember the last time a Cowboy was arrested or even caused problems while on the roster. It seems that the rest of the NFL has well past us by with deviant behavior. When we bring them on our team we straighten them out.

:goodposting: When was the last time a Cowboy was arrested? I remember Galloway got into a little trouble having a party that got out of control, but he wasn't arrested or even ticketed.
