Deadline deal for Raiders running back falls through

Chargers GM A.J. Smith almost pulled off a trade for Raiders running back Michael Bush, shown here against San Diego earlier this year.

The Chargers came close to making another deal at the trading deadline, league sources said Sunday.

Raiders running back Michael Bush was almost a Charger before the Raiders backed out just before the 1 p.m. deadline, sources said.

According to a Bay Area source, the sides were close on terms, believed to be a second-day pick, before the Raiders pulled the deal.

Asked about the negotiations, Chargers General Manager A.J. Smith neither confirmed nor denied there had been talks.

Smith has worked a deal three of the past four trading deadlines, including high-profile swaps of draft picks for receiver Keenan McCardell in 2004 and receiver Chris Chambers in 2007.

Smith also traded Toniu Fonoti to the Vikings for a seventh-round draft pick in 2005.

The Chargers likely were interested in Bush for depth behind LaDainian Tomlinson. Current backup Darren Sproles becomes an unrestricted free agent after this season. The Chargers would like to keep Sproles, but he is expected to test the market before deciding whether to stay in San Diego.

Bush (6 feet 1, 245 pounds) was a fourth-round pick in 2007, but he did not play last year while recovering from a broken leg suffered in his final season at Louisville. This season, he has 202 yards on 47 carries. He also has nine receptions for 89 yards, including seven for 80 yards against the Chargers last month.

Asked if he worked on any trades this year, Smith said, "We are always exploring possibilities to get better."

It seems like it might be more of a reflection on Hester than it is on Sproles. Sproles is a unique back, and as pointed out, soon to be a free agent.

I'll say one thing to all of you who ever though Michael Bush was a surefire #1 pick before his injury. He is over 2 years removed from his injury and was a hair away from getting dealt for a second day draft pick. He's a nice functional back who can have a good long career as a solid backup or part of a RBBC in this league but he's not special.

Backs almost never get traded for high picks. That means nothing. I am more interested in his play this season--and having seen every game he's played I can tell you he has looked like a featured back. He isn't slow and plodding like some big backs. And he doesn't run "high" like we were told by some. He has shown good vision, agility, speed and power. He looks like the kind of back you could give the ball to 25 times a game.

I've got a completely different opinion than you. To me he looks very slow and plodding. He does run upright and has done nothing impressive. He got a long run at the end of the Chiefs game on a beat down defense and caught a bunch of balls at the end of the Charger game when they sat back and gave up the short stuff. Other than that he's done very little. If the Raiders felt he was special or a feature back they would not have drafted Mcfadden or entertained giving him away for a second day pick.

AJ's attempts to gain an advantage over an in-division rival aren't really a reflection on Sproles.

Kiffin made it pretty obvious he didn't think they needed DMAC and that Fargas + Bush was enough. Davis wanted a marquee guy who would make the Raiders the talk of the NFL, like Peterson did last year and like Reggie has to a certain extent. Clearly the other Bush won't do that. He is more like Marion Barber - a workhorse. I don't know jersey sales but I'd bet Barber is at least 3rd on his team, maybe as low as 5th behind the safety Roy Williams and Witten.

The Raiders hadn't seen Bush play when they picked McFadden, besides that Al Davis loves skill sets like DMC's. That should have no reflection on Bush that they selected McFadden.
entertained giving him away for a second day pick
A more legitimate point. However Bush is still their #3 RB with #1 and #2 signed for a few years. How many other teams WOULDN'T trade their #3 back for a 2nd day draft pick? Giants and Bradshaw, Hester in SD (though they were the ones trying to get him), G Jones on the Jags. Realistically we can't really asses what the Raiders think of him with the Vauge 2nd day pick tagged to him. Thats a huge range from the 4th to the 7th round. If the Chargers offered a 4th for him and the Raiders refused is much different that the Chargers trying to pry him with a 6th or 7th round pick.

Can you point out to me were Kiffin made it obvious they did not want or need DMAC. Also, what has Bush done to merit being compared to Marion Barber?

The Raiders did see Bush practice last year. Bush said he felt he could have played last year so they did get some look at him but not in a game type situation. In addition to having Fargas I just don't think if they felt great about Bush they would have selected DMAC. What's really important to see is the two games Fargas and Mcfadden have remained healthy for an entire game Bush has not been a factor in the gameplan. He only got in the game last week when it was a blowout and was a non factor in week one.My only point to even bring this up was the constant comment I hear that Bush was going to be a sure fire #1 pick if he had not broke his leg. I'm not saying he would or would not be I've just been contending that people are taking big leaps to make the assumption he was going to be automatic first round pick.

lol @ only a 2d day pick for Bush. Davis is a moron if he even seriously considered that.
Bush didn't play last year and has barely seen the field this yearthink he cracks the starting rotation with Fargas under contract and McFadden on the roster?
