If how he was as a player is any indication he'd also bring discipline, composure and mental toughness - which the Chargers sorely need.Like I said in the other thread, Singletary and Ryan seem the most promising of the candidates to me so far.
ETA: Carroll is not the answer here and I don't see him as a realistic posibility anyway for many reasons already covered.
Two Additional Candidates To Interview With ChargersAccording to league sources, Atlanta Falcons defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer and Seattle Seahawks assistant head coach/defensive backs Jim Mora Jr. will interview with the San Diego Chargers regarding their vacant head coaching position.
I think the fact that Ron Rivera was Mike Singletary's backup on the Bears is a moot point here. Rivera has been coaching for years, whereas Singletary hasn't even been a coordinator yet. The last person that didn't run the special teams, defense or offense that has had success (that I know of) was Andy Reid.
Singletary would do well if he could simply delegate to his offensive and defensive coordinators, and both were very strong. I fail to see much development with the linebackers in San Francisco, and this is supposed to be his 'specialty' on that team.
Also, I think whoever San Diego hires will have a much deeper background with the 3-4 defense.

Actually I thought both Bandon Moore and Manny Lawson progressed quite nicely last season and were a big reason for the improvement in SF. In '05 Jeff Ulbrich was one of the best defenders on the team before his injury but in '06 he had to compete for playing time because of how well Moore/Lawson played. At MLB Derek Smith played well, but has done so for a long time and is past the point of getting "coached up" imo. He's playing at as high a level as he's capable of.
“We have a plan,” Smith said. “Now that our first series of interviews has concluded, Dean and I are going to take a step back and reassess the six candidates that have been here so far. We are leaving the process open-ended with the possibility of additional interviews.”
As of Sunday night, no interviews were scheduled for the coming days, but Spanos left that option open.
FOXSports.com has learned that the Chargers are talking to Norv Turner as if they are looking to hire him as their head coach. Sources contend that Turner is leaning toward hiring Ted Cottrell, a long-time defensive NFL coach, to run the Chargers defense. Cottrell worked in the league office this past season but is one of the best minds in the league in running a 3-4 scheme.
