Had to wait until our free agency opened. Keep an eye on this guy.

From Panthers.com Q & A with John Fox

Question:There seems to be a lot of excitement about rookie safety Charles Godfrey from Iowa. What can you say to add credence to that?

Answer: He played with the first group to start with (at mini-camp), and I thought he handled it very well. He adapted well. It didn't look like it was too big for him. He fit in well. Our players liked him. Maybe one of the good (things) was Steve Smith said, "Man, that (number) 30 is pretty good." Smitty doesn't give out a lot of compliments.

PFW Whispers

With first-round picks RB Jonathan Stewart and ORT Jeff Otah sitting out while nursing injuries, we hear third-round FS Charles Godfrey was the most impressive youngster at the Panthers’ recent minicamp. Sources say the rookie played like he had been in the league for five years.

05/15/08 - DB Charles Godfrey, the team's third-round draft pick from Iowa, was the talk of minicamp. He was thrown into the starting lineup right away at free safety and looked superb. In fact, as the Panthers walked off the field for the final time on Sunday, coach John Fox purposely sought out Godfrey and congratulated him on how well he picked things up. The real bullets won't fly for awhile, but observers believe this kid could be a steal. He's smart, tough and fast.

05/08/08 - FS Charles Godfrey to find a spot in the starting lineup. The rookie out of Iowa worked with the first team at free safety on Friday, ahead of veteran Terrence Holt. "He's a young guy that obviously we thought highly enough of to take in the third round," Fox said. "We'll throw them out there. As far as where that depth chart ends up, that's in the players' hands when we start competing. "He's a capable guy. He's 5-11, 200 plus pounds and runs 4.39. Now he's just got to learn the position. He's done it before in college at a high level and he even has some corner background. We're excited about seeing how he develops."

05/01/08 - DB Charles Godfrey from Iowa is one of those guys who'll do anything he can to get on the football field. After his sophomore year, Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz asked Godfrey to switch from safety to cornerback and he was more than willing to oblige. "He told me, 'You can play any coverage that we play. I've been watching you, and you are good at bump and run, and playing off. You can play any coverage. We need a big, solid fast corner to hold these big receivers,'" Godfrey said of Ferentz. "I told him that it didn't matter to me and I would do whatever it takes to help this team win. It was kind of a learning experience for me, to get a feel for it, and my senior year I just took off with it." Godfrey had five interceptions as a senior and allowed no touchdown passes. "That was one thing I said going into my senior year," Godfrey said. "I said no one was going to score on me and when the ball is in the air, it's my ball." And when Ferentz told Godfrey prior to his senior year that he wouldn't be playing much on special teams because he wanted him focusing on cornerback, Godfrey argued against it.

I wanted him in our rookie draft, but had to use too many picks to move up and overdraft Sweed.

To my surprise  he went undrafted, real excited I was able to pick him up.

I really like Godfrey. I think he starts day one and puts up respectable numbers. He's listed as a corner, but will play FS.

Has decent muscle definition for a cornerback, but can also add at least another 10 pounds of bulk without the added weight affecting his foot speed for a possible move to safety...Very physical hitter who likes to provide run support... NFLDRAFTSCOUT

Panthers rookie Godfrey a willing pupil
