Charles Johnson (1 Viewer)

Jene could you expound on this a bit. Is this of concern for Johnson owners? Is Rivera going to make a shift back to his San Diego day with the 3-4 defense? Thanks

"Carolina used their 3-4 look sparingly again last week, but when they did, Charles Johnson came off the field. There didn't appear to be anything wrong with Johnson and the personnel change makes no sense. The Panthers signed Johnson - a young, productive all-around defensive end entering the prime of his career - to a monster contract this offseason. He looked to have been worth every penny during the first half of the season and is arguably your best defender. There can be no reasonable explanation, then, for taking him off the field (for a guy named Thomas Keiser, no less) to throw a change-up front at the offense now and then. With Greg Hardy missing on a few of those snaps, it won't take offensive coordinators long to audible to a passing play when the Panthers send that group into the huddle."

Rivera and McDermott have both said this year that they value the 3-4 as a different look. Carolina heavily invested in Charles Johnson, but he'll have to get better to pull a Mario Williams this offseason. Can't see them leaning heavily 3-4 base and continuing to bring Johnson off the field.

Would expect it to continue to be a game plan changeup for now, but we'll see what they have in mind this offseason.

They're doing the same thing to DeAngelo Williams (he hasn't had more than 13 touches in any game this season). It doesn't make a lot of sense with the money they JUST GAVE THESE TWO GUYS.

Goodness, at this point Johnson is barely a DL2. I'm glad I kept working the wire and developed some better options.
